The heartbreaking reason Prince William gave Princess Kate the sapphire engagement ring

Prince William and Princess Catherine officially announced their engagement on November 16, 2010, marking one of the most anticipated royal milestones of the decade. Although the news became public in November, the actual proposal had taken place weeks earlier in October, during a quiet, private getaway in Kenya. William chose an incredibly meaningful moment to ask Catherine to marry him—on the veranda of a secluded lodge beside the stunning Lake Rutundu.

The engagement ring he presented to Catherine instantly captured worldwide attention—not just for its beauty, but for its emotional significance. It was the sapphire and diamond ring that once belonged to his late mother, Princess Diana. In their engagement interview at St James’s Palace, William gently explained his heartfelt decision: “It’s my way of making sure my mother didn’t miss out on today.” It was his symbolic way of including Princess Diana in one of the most important moments of his life.

Standing arm in arm with her fiancé, Catherine gracefully accepted both the proposal and the treasured ring. At first, the ring was slightly loose and had to be resized to fit her perfectly. The couple, who first met as students at the University of St Andrews in the early 2000s, revealed that they had spoken seriously about marriage for nearly a year before the proposal.

Their Kenya stay was filled with warmth, intimacy, and simplicity—far from royal formality. According to The Mirror, Catherine even left a note in the lodge’s guestbook, which read:
“Thank you for such a wonderful 24 hours. Sadly no fish to be found but we had fun trying. I love the warm fires and candlelights—so romantic. Hope to be back soon, Catherine Middleton.”

Just a few months later, on April 29, 2011, millions around the world watched their royal wedding—a true modern fairytale. Today, the couple are proud parents to three children and continue to be among the most beloved figures in the British royal family.
