Happy Soul Moral Stories

“Come On! Somebody Must Have a Use for My Worthless Wife! Five Hundred Dollars for Her!” My Husband Grabbed a Microphone at His Charity Gala and Tried to Auction Me Off in Front of Nearly Three Hundred Guests—Then an Unexpected Bidder Stood Up, Offered Twenty Million Dollars, and Asked Me to Meet Him the Next Morning, Which Turned His Cruel Joke Into the Beginning of a Story Neither of Us Saw Coming

Part 1 of 3

“Five Hundred Dollars for the Woman Who Has Contributed the Least to This Foundation.”

The room exploded with laughter before I even realized Harold was looking directly at me.

Crystal chandeliers reflected off hundreds of champagne glasses inside the grand ballroom of the Prescott Foundation’s annual fundraising gala. Nearly three hundred guests—donors, board members, business executives, local reporters, and politicians—filled the room.

I was standing beside Stage Left, holding a clipboard covered with last-minute notes.

The auction catalog.

The seating chart.

The list of scholarship recipients.

The dietary restrictions for twelve guests.

The emergency phone number for the florist.

None of those documents carried my name.

For eleven years, I had organized every major event for the Prescott Foundation.

Harold always introduced me as “my wife.”

Never as the woman who coordinated every volunteer, balanced every budget, recruited every sponsor, or stayed until midnight stacking chairs after everyone else went home.

That night was no different.

Except this time, he decided to make me part of the entertainment.

Harold adjusted the microphone and smiled at the audience.

“We’ve raised almost four million dollars tonight.”

Applause filled the ballroom.

“But I think we still have one item left to auction.”

People chuckled politely.

He turned toward me.

“My wife.”

More laughter.

I stayed where I was.

Someone near the front thought he was joking.

Harold continued.

“She’s been living off my success for over a decade.”

Another wave of laughter.

“She doesn’t bring in donors.”

“She doesn’t give speeches.”

“She doesn’t make business decisions.”

He shrugged dramatically.

“Maybe somebody here can finally find a use for her.”

My fingers tightened around the clipboard.

The paper bent beneath my hand.

Harold raised the microphone again.

“Opening bid…”

He paused long enough for everyone to look at me.

“Five hundred dollars.”

The ballroom erupted.

I recognized nearly every face.

People I had personally helped check into hotels.

People whose dietary requests I remembered every year.

People whose grandchildren’s names I knew.

Most of them laughed.

Some looked uncomfortable.

None of them stood up.

I looked down at the clipboard.

A faint coffee stain sat near the bottom corner.

I’d spilled that coffee while reviewing volunteer schedules at two in the morning the previous week.

For some reason, I couldn’t stop staring at it.

Harold laughed into the microphone.

“Come on. Surely somebody needs a hardworking housekeeper.”

Someone yelled,

“Six hundred!”

More laughter.

Another voice shouted,

“Seven!”

Harold clapped his hands.

“Now we’re talking.”

I took one slow breath.

Then another.

This wasn’t really about money.

It was about showing everyone exactly where he believed I belonged.

The Man Who Didn’t Laugh

Just as Harold lifted the microphone again, another voice cut across the ballroom.

“Twenty million dollars.”

Silence.

Not quieter.

Complete silence.

Every head turned toward the back of the room.

A tall man in a dark navy suit stood beside one of the rear tables.

He wasn’t smiling.

He wasn’t holding a champagne glass.

He simply raised one auction paddle.

The number printed on it was twenty-three.

Harold blinked.

“I’m sorry…”

The man repeated himself.

“Twenty million.”

Nobody laughed this time.

The auctioneer standing near the stage looked confused.

Several reporters lowered their cameras before immediately raising them again.

Harold forced a smile.

“Sir, I appreciate your sense of humor.”

“I’m not joking.”

The stranger’s voice stayed calm.

“Wire transfer tonight if necessary.”

Someone whispered,

“Who is that?”

I had never seen him before.

Harold cleared his throat.

“Obviously my wife isn’t actually for sale.”

The stranger nodded once.

“I know.”

He looked directly at me.

Not at Harold.

At me.

“I’m here because I’ve been trying to find Mrs. Anastasia…”

He hesitated.

“…Robbins.”

The name hit me harder than Harold’s joke.

Robbins.

I hadn’t used my maiden name in over thirty years.

Very few people even knew it anymore.

Harold’s expression changed almost instantly.

“You have the wrong person.”

The stranger ignored him.

“Mrs. Prescott, I’d appreciate ten minutes of your time tomorrow morning.”

I stared at him.

“Do I know you?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“But someone spent years hoping I’d find you.”

The ballroom had become so quiet that I could hear photographers adjusting their camera lenses.

Harold stepped between us.

“Security.”

Nobody moved.

The stranger calmly slipped a business card onto the nearest table.

“My name is Owen Rodgers.”

“Nine o’clock tomorrow.”

“Whether you come or not…”

He looked at me one last time.

“…you deserve to know the truth.”

Then he turned around and walked out.

No shouting.

No threats.

No dramatic exit.

Just one man leaving through the ballroom doors while nearly three hundred people watched in complete silence.

I looked down.

The business card was still lying on the table.

Eleven Years Behind the Curtain

The gala officially continued.

At least, it tried to.

A jazz trio returned to the stage.

Servers brought out dessert.

People pretended to resume conversations.

But every few minutes, I caught someone glancing in my direction.

No one approached me.

No one apologized.

Around ten-thirty, I was already loading leftover centerpieces into plastic bins.

Like I always did.

Harold finally walked into the storage room behind the ballroom.

He loosened his tie.

“You’re making this look worse than it was.”

I kept folding table linens.
