Happy Soul Moral Stories

Minutes After I Gave Birth to the Son My Husband Had Wanted for Eight Years, He Saw a Birthmark on Our Baby’s Back, Accused Me of Messing With His Best Friend Behind His Back, and Walked Out of the Hospital—But When the DNA Results Came Back, the Mark Raised a Question Neither of Us Was Prepared to Answer

Part 1 of 3

The Mark on My Son’s Back

My husband had been holding our newborn son for less than five minutes when he stopped smiling.

I was still lying in the hospital bed, exhausted, watching Ricardo stare down at the baby we had waited eight years to meet.

Then he pulled the blanket lower.

His thumb froze against Mateo’s back.

Just below our son’s left shoulder was a pale brown birthmark shaped like a small crescent moon.

Ricardo looked at it.

Then he looked at me.

“What is that?”

I thought he was worried something was wrong.

“A birthmark, I guess.”

He didn’t answer.

For eight years, Ricardo had talked about having a son.

We already had four daughters—Sofia, Camila, Elena, and Lucia—and I loved every one of them exactly as they were. But Ricardo came from a traditional family where people still made comments about “carrying on the name.”

After Lucia was born, his mother had actually patted my hand and said, “Maybe next time.”

As if Lucia had been a rehearsal.

I should have said something then.

Instead, I had smiled.

And now, after years of trying, pregnancies, disappointments, and conversations I sometimes wished we had stopped having, Mateo was finally here.

Ricardo had cried when the nurse placed him in his arms.

Now he looked like he could barely stand to touch him.

“Mariana.”

His voice was different.

“What?”

“Javier has this.”

I stared at him.

“Has what?”

He turned Mateo slightly, pointing at the mark.

“This exact birthmark.”

For a second, I honestly didn’t understand what he was suggesting.

Javier had been Ricardo’s closest friend since high school. He had been at our wedding. He came to birthday parties. He helped Ricardo move furniture. He knew all four of our daughters.

Yes, Javier had a crescent-shaped birthmark near his shoulder.

I knew because everyone knew.

They had joked about it for years.

But until that moment, it had never meant anything to me.

“Okay,” I said.

Ricardo stared at me.

“Okay?”

“Ricardo, lots of people have birthmarks.”

His jaw tightened.

Then he placed Mateo back into the hospital bassinet.

Not gently enough to frighten me, but quickly enough that the nurse across the room looked over.

“Did you sleep with him?”

The room seemed to become very quiet.

“What?”

“Javier.”

I pushed myself higher against the pillows.

“No.”

“Don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not lying.”

He pointed toward Mateo.

“Then explain that.”

I looked at my son.

He was less than an hour old.

His tiny fist had slipped free of the blanket.

“I don’t have to explain a birthmark.”

Ricardo picked up his jacket from the chair.

That was when I understood he wasn’t just angry.

He had already decided.

He Left Before Our Son Had Been Alive an Hour

“Where are you going?”

Ricardo shoved his phone into his pocket.

“I can’t do this.”

“Do what?”

“Stand here pretending that’s my son.”

I looked toward the bassinet.

“He is your son.”

“Then why does he have Javier’s mark?”

“I don’t know.”

“Exactly.”

I remember those words more clearly than almost anything else from that morning.

Exactly.

As though not knowing why two people had similar birthmarks was proof of adultery.

I reached for the call button beside my bed.

My hands were shaking.

“Get a DNA test.”

Ricardo stopped near the door.

“What?”

“Get one. Today. Tomorrow. Whenever they’ll do it.”

He looked at me without answering.

“You think I slept with Javier? Fine. Test Mateo.”

“And if he isn’t mine?”

“He is.”

“Mariana.”

“He is.”

He rubbed both hands over his face.

For one second, I thought he might come back to the bed.

Instead, he said something I still have trouble forgetting.

“When they discharge you, go to Daniela’s.”

Daniela was my older sister.

“You’re throwing me out?”

“I need time.”

“We have four daughters at home.”

“I’ll make sure their things are packed.”

I stared at him.

“Their things?”

“They should stay with you until I know what’s going on.”

There it was.

Not just me.

Our girls too.

I looked at Mateo sleeping beside me and then back at the man I had been married to for eleven years.

“Leave.”

He blinked.

“Mariana—”

“You were already leaving. So leave.”

He did.

The door closed behind him.

A nurse came over a few seconds later and pretended to check Mateo’s blanket.

She didn’t ask what had happened.

I was grateful for that.

I reached into the bassinet and placed two fingers against my son’s tiny hand.

The crescent mark was hidden beneath his blanket again.

But I couldn’t stop seeing it.

By that afternoon, I had called Daniela.

By the next morning, I had arranged the DNA test.

I wasn’t going to spend weeks begging Ricardo to believe me.

He wanted proof.

I would give him proof.

Five Children and Three Suitcases

Daniela picked us up when Mateo and I were discharged.

Ricardo wasn’t there.

My four daughters were already waiting at my sister’s house.

Three suitcases sat beside the couch.

Three.

For five children and me.

Ricardo had packed them himself.

Sofia, our oldest, was ten. She knew immediately that something was wrong.

“Is Dad coming later?”

I set Mateo’s carrier on the floor.

“Not tonight.”

“Did you fight?”

Daniela looked at me from the kitchen.

I shook my head slightly.

Not in front of them.

“Your dad and I need to figure something out.”

Camila leaned over Mateo’s carrier.

“Can I see him?”

“Wash your hands first.”

Within minutes, all four girls were crowded around their brother.

Lucia, who was only four, touched one of his socks.

“He’s really small.”

“You were smaller.”

She looked offended.

“No, I wasn’t.”

For about thirty seconds, everybody laughed.

Then Sofia asked again.

“Why didn’t Dad come?”

I picked up one of the suitcases.

“We’ll talk about it when I know more.”

That night, after the girls were asleep, Daniela sat across from me at her kitchen table.

Mateo was in a portable bassinet between us.

I showed her Ricardo’s messages.

The first said:

I need space.

The second:

Please don’t bring the kids back to the house yet.

Then, two days later:

My attorney will contact you if necessary.

Daniela read that one twice.

“His attorney?”

“Apparently.”

“You just had his baby.”

“He doesn’t think it’s his.”

She put my phone down.

“Because of a birthmark?”

I nodded.

Daniela stared at me for several seconds.

“That’s insane.”

I didn’t answer.

There was something worse than the accusation itself.

Ricardo hadn’t asked questions.

He hadn’t waited.

He hadn’t even stayed long enough to hear a doctor say that birthmarks were not paternity tests.

He had seen one mark and rearranged our entire family around it.

The DNA samples had already been submitted.

All I could do was wait.

Three days later, Javier came to Daniela’s house.

He carried a blue gift bag and a box of diapers.

When I opened the door, he smiled.

“Where’s my favorite new nephew?”

I didn’t move.

His smile disappeared.

“What happened?”

“Did Ricardo call you?”

“No. Why?”

I studied his face.

He genuinely looked confused.

“You haven’t talked to him?”

“Not since before Mateo was born.”

He glanced past me.

“Mariana, what’s going on?”

I almost told him.

Then Mateo started crying inside.

“It’s complicated.”

Javier held up the diapers.

“Can I at least leave these?”

I stepped aside.

He stayed less than twenty minutes.

He held Mateo once.

He congratulated me.

He asked twice where Ricardo was.

I gave him almost nothing.

But as Javier handed Mateo back to me, his shirt collar shifted.

And I saw it.

The pale crescent near his shoulder.

Same curve.

Same side.

For the first time since Ricardo left the hospital, I felt something I hadn’t expected.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Confusion.

Because Ricardo had been wrong about me.

I knew that.

But I couldn’t explain the mark either.

The Test Ricardo Said He Needed

The results arrived seven days after Mateo was born.

I opened the email at Daniela’s kitchen counter while she was making coffee.
