Part 1 of 3

The Last New Year’s Eve

At 10:17 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, my husband pushed a folder across our dining table and told me that another woman would be sleeping in my bedroom the following night.

I had been married to Nathaniel “Nate” Holloway for nine years.

We had a seven-year-old daughter named Clara.

And apparently, neither of us was part of the future he wanted anymore.

“Sign it, Corinne,” Nate said. “I don’t want to drag this out.”

I looked down at the divorce papers.

Behind him, his mother, Marjorie Holloway, sat comfortably with a glass of sparkling cider in her hand.

She looked almost pleased.

Our daughter was upstairs asleep, completely unaware that her father was dismantling her family before midnight.

Nate loosened his tie.

“Tomorrow, Lacey is moving in.”

I already knew about Lacey.

What I hadn’t known until that evening was that she was four months pregnant.

Nate leaned against the table and delivered the sentence he had apparently rehearsed.

“She’ll take your place, and she’s going to give me the son you never could.”

Marjorie raised her glass.

“Maybe this family can finally have a boy to carry on the Holloway name.”

I stared at them.

Seven years earlier, I had given birth to Clara after a difficult pregnancy. In the years that followed, we had hoped for another child, but several pregnancies ended far earlier than we had dreamed.

I had grieved each loss quietly.

Marjorie had turned each one into evidence that I had somehow disappointed her son.

But Clara?

Our beautiful, funny, bright little girl?

Apparently, she wasn’t enough.

The Fifty-Thousand-Dollar Goodbye

Nate slid a cashier’s check across the table.

Fifty thousand dollars.

“Take it,” he said. “It’ll help you get started.”

I almost laughed.

For years, Nate had let everyone believe I contributed almost nothing financially.

He conveniently forgot who had paid the deposit on his first office.

He forgot who covered our bills when his construction consulting firm nearly collapsed during its second year.

He forgot who stayed home with Clara whenever his mother needed help.

Most importantly, he had no idea what I still owned separately.

I picked up a pen.

“You really want this?”

He sighed impatiently.

“Corinne, don’t make this emotional.”

Marjorie shook her head.

“For once, leave with some dignity.”

So I did.

I read every page.

Then I signed.

Nate’s expression changed.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

I pushed the check back toward him.

“Keep the money.”

His eyebrows lifted.

“You’re refusing fifty thousand dollars?”

“You may need it more than I do.”

Marjorie laughed.

“Still pretending to be important.”

I stood.

“No, Marjorie. I finally stopped pretending that this family respects me.”

Then I went upstairs.

The Little Pink Suitcase

Clara was awake.

She sat on the edge of her bed hugging the stuffed rabbit she had slept with since preschool.

“Mom?”

My heart sank.

“Sweetheart, why aren’t you sleeping?”

“I heard Grandma yelling.”

I sat beside her.

She looked toward the hallway.

“Are you and Daddy mad at each other?”

There are moments when being a parent means swallowing every emotion because your child should not have to carry an adult’s burden.

I brushed her hair behind her ear.

“We’re going somewhere else tonight, sweetheart.”

“Is Daddy coming?”

I paused.

“No.”

Her face fell.

I refused to insult her father.

I simply helped her pack pajamas, school clothes, her favorite books, and the stuffed rabbit into her little pink suitcase.

Downstairs, Nate looked surprised when he saw Clara wearing her winter coat.

“You’re taking her tonight?”

I stared at him.

“Where exactly did you think your seven-year-old daughter was going to sleep when Lacey moved in tomorrow?”

He glanced at his mother.

Neither answered.

Clara held my hand tighter.

Then she asked the question that I would remember for years.

“Daddy, are you coming to see me tomorrow?”

Nate crouched.

“We’ll figure everything out soon, pumpkin.”

It wasn’t an answer.

Even Clara knew it.

What Nate Never Knew

Six months earlier, I had discovered Lacey because Nate forgot to lock his phone.

I saw a message thanking him for an expensive bracelet.

I didn’t confront him.

Instead, I started looking carefully at our finances.
