Part 1 of 3

The Morning I Broke the Rule

The coffee mug nearly slipped from my hand when I heard my three-year-old daughter talking inside Mr. Callow’s private office.

My name is Marissa Fenwick. I was thirty-three years old, a widow, and for almost nine months I had worked as a housekeeper in a large private home outside Franklin, Tennessee.

My employer, Harrison Callow, was forty-seven and owned several commercial construction companies across the Southeast.

People rarely raised their voices around him.

They did not need to.

Harrison had a way of becoming completely still when something displeased him. Somehow, that quiet expression made grown executives straighten their jackets and choose their next words carefully.

And there was one rule every employee understood.

Nobody entered Harrison Callow’s office without permission.

That morning, my daughter had apparently decided rules were suggestions.

Her name was Poppy.

At 5:30 a.m., my babysitter had called to say she couldn’t come. My mother lived two hours away, and I couldn’t afford to miss another shift.

So I brought Poppy with me.

I set her up in a small sitting room near the laundry area with crayons, crackers, juice, and her stuffed rabbit.

I crouched in front of her.

“Stay right here until Mommy comes back, okay?”

She nodded seriously.

“Then ice cream?”

“Then ice cream.”

Apparently, a promise involving ice cream did not constitute a legally binding agreement with a three-year-old.

At 9:15, I returned.

The room was empty.

I checked the kitchen.

The hallway.

The breakfast room.

Then I heard Poppy’s little voice coming from the one room I desperately hoped she had not entered.

Harrison’s office.

I hurried down the hallway and stopped outside the half-open door.

Poppy stood directly in front of his enormous walnut desk.

Four adults were watching her.

Harrison sat behind the desk.

His assistant, Warren Pike, stood beside a bookshelf holding a tablet.

Two members of the household security team were near the windows.

Nobody moved.

Then Poppy frowned.

She pressed her lips together.

She folded her arms across her chest and lifted her chin.

My stomach dropped.

She was copying Harrison.

Perfectly.

One of the security men stared at the floor.

Warren looked as though he had forgotten how to breathe.

Harrison slowly turned toward the doorway.

He saw me.

“Marissa.”

I stepped inside immediately.

“Mr. Callow, I’m so sorry. My sitter canceled and I thought she would stay downstairs. I promise this won’t happen again.”

He pointed toward Poppy.

“She’s yours?”

“Yes.”

I prepared myself to lose my job.

Instead, Harrison looked back at my daughter.

Then something almost unbelievable happened.

He stood, walked around the desk, crouched until he was at Poppy’s eye level and copied her expression.

Frown.

Folded arms.

Raised chin.

Poppy burst into laughter.

Warren covered his mouth.

Even one of the security men turned toward the window to hide his smile.

And Harrison Callow—the man everyone in that house seemed afraid of—laughed with my three-year-old daughter.

I had never heard him laugh before.

Finally, he stood.

“She can stay.”

I blinked.

“Excuse me?”

He pointed toward the rug beside his bookcase.

“Put her things there. At least we’ll know where she is.”

That should have been nothing more than a funny morning.

Instead, it became the beginning of a secret that had been waiting years for me to discover.

The Little Girl Who Changed the House

After that day, something changed.

Whenever childcare fell through, Harrison allowed me to bring Poppy.

He never admitted that he liked having her around.

But somehow a box of crayons appeared beside the bookcase.

Then children’s books.

Then a small white table.

A few weeks later, there was even a basket labeled for toys.

I never asked who bought them.

Harrison never explained.

Poppy treated his office like her personal kingdom.

Sometimes she drew while Harrison worked.

Sometimes she lined up stuffed animals beneath his window.

And occasionally she would look at him, make his famous serious face, and wait until he copied her.

Those were the only times I saw him become someone other than the intimidating businessman everyone knew.

For a while, I wondered whether we had all misunderstood him.

Then one rainy afternoon in November, I found the photograph.

The Man Standing Beside My Husband

I was dusting the shelves behind Harrison’s desk when an old hardcover book shifted.

Something fell behind it.

A photograph.

I picked it up.

Harrison looked younger in the picture, perhaps in his late thirties. He was standing at a construction site wearing a hard hat.

Beside him was another man.

The second man was smiling.

My hands began trembling.

I knew that smile.

I had fallen in love with it.

I had married it.

And two years earlier, I had stood beside a grave trying to understand how I would raise our daughter without it.

The man standing beside Harrison was my husband, Graham Fenwick.

I heard the office door open.

“Marissa.”

I turned around.

Harrison saw the photograph.

His face changed immediately.

“Why do you have a picture of my husband?”
