Obstacle Prince George will face before he’s king, royal expert predicts

Prince George may never ascend to the throne, according to a former BBC royal correspondent who shared his views on the evolving future of the British monarchy.

At just 12 years old, Prince George stands second in line to the throne, following his father, Prince William, and grandfather, King Charles. Around the time of his seventh birthday, George’s parents reportedly had a conversation with him about the path that lies ahead. It’s said that his mother, Princess Kate, has taken a leading role in helping prepare him for a future that may never materialize as expected.

Despite the preparation, royal expert Christopher Lee suggests that George might not ever become king.

In a conversation with the Express, Lee pointed out that several unpredictable elements could come into play as time passes, particularly the changing support for the monarchy itself.

“Voting for a monarchy is supporting an institution. Voting for the Sovereign is quite a different X-factor,” Lee explained. He added that by the time George would be set to wear the crown, public sentiment toward the monarchy as an institution—and toward the royal family personally—could be drastically different.

Lee also noted that changes to long-standing institutions could play a role in shaping George’s future. For example, the House of Lords has already seen major reforms, and other constitutional bodies may undergo similar shifts.

Another key point Lee raised was the growing trend of Commonwealth countries stepping away from the monarchy. He referenced Barbados, which removed Queen Elizabeth II as head of state in 2021, as a possible indicator of more changes to come.

Prince George’s Future Title When William Becomes King

Once Prince William eventually takes the throne, he is expected to become King William—unless he opts for a different regnal name. His current title, Prince of Wales, will be set aside until he decides to grant it to someone else, likely a future heir.

Traditionally, the title of Prince of Wales is held by the heir to the throne, much like Charles held it for decades until becoming king in 2022. Afterward, King Charles passed the title to William, and by extension, to his wife Catherine, who became Princess of Wales.

It’s widely believed that William will follow tradition and one day give the title to George. Notably, there is no age requirement for being named Prince of Wales. King Charles was only 10 years old when Queen Elizabeth II granted him the title—George is already 12.

So if William becomes king during George’s teen years, he may very well choose to give him the title sooner rather than later.
