Harry torpedoes fragile peace with King Charles over fresh security demand

Just weeks after what seemed like a turning point in his strained relationship with King Charles III, Prince Harry has reportedly reignited tensions by requesting a review of his UK security arrangements.

The Duke of Sussex, 40, recently returned to Britain for the WellChild Awards, where he also met privately with his father at Clarence House — their first face-to-face meeting in 19 months. The one-hour reunion was viewed as a hopeful step toward reconciliation following years of family discord since Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and moved to California.

However, that fragile progress appears to have quickly unraveled.

A New Push for Government-Funded Protection

According to The Sunday Times, Harry has written to UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, requesting a new risk assessment in hopes of reinstating taxpayer-funded security during his visits to the UK.

A palace insider told the outlet the move has caused irritation behind palace doors. “It’s not going to help matters. We’re back to where we were,” the source said.

This renewed demand comes just months after Harry lost a High Court appeal against the UK government’s decision to remove his publicly funded protection.

Security Dispute Deepens the Rift

The issue remains one of the biggest obstacles in Harry’s relationship with the King. According to reports, the Duke still believes his father has the power to intervene and reverse the ruling.

Currently, Harry’s security in the UK is handled on a case-by-case basis, following the same procedures used for visiting dignitaries.

After losing his court case earlier this year, Harry accused the Royal Household of orchestrating a “good old-fashioned establishment stitch-up,” and told the BBC: “I don’t know how much longer my father has. He won’t speak to me because of this security stuff.”

Buckingham Palace has firmly denied that Charles plays any role in the decision-making process. “The King cannot and will not lobby,” a royal source told The Times. “His representatives cannot advocate for policy outcomes, particularly in relation to his own family.”

Safety Concerns During His Recent Visit

During his latest trip to the UK — which he reportedly funded himself — Harry was accompanied only by a liaison officer, who was on standby for emergencies.

It was later revealed that a known stalker managed to come within meters of the Duke on two occasions before being “body blocked” by a member of staff. The incident has only strengthened Harry’s belief that his safety — and that of his family — is at risk without official protection.

Determined to Secure Protection for His Family

Despite repeated legal and diplomatic setbacks, sources close to Harry say he remains determined to “privately lobby” for stronger security measures. His goal, they claim, is to be able to visit his homeland more frequently and safely — and to eventually bring Meghan, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, with him.

But with tensions rising once again and palace officials reportedly exasperated, Harry’s latest move threatens to undo what little progress had been made toward healing the royal rift.
