Kate Middleton made headlines during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to the UK—not just for her role as host, but for her unexpected choice of attire.
Departing from her usual loyalty to British designers, the Princess of Wales opted for a soft pink Christian Dior outfit, marking the first time she has worn the French label at a royal engagement.
Her elegant two-piece ensemble caught attention not only for its beauty but also for its deeper significance.
A Subtle Nod to Meghan Markle—or France?
Royal watchers were quick to draw comparisons to Meghan Markle, who frequently selects Dior for public appearances. Some speculated that Kate’s choice was a quiet acknowledgment that if Dior is suitable for Meghan, it’s suitable for her as well. However, others believe the move had more to do with diplomacy. Dior, being an iconic French brand, may have been chosen as a sartorial tribute to President Macron’s home country.
In another break from tradition, Kate moved away from her usual bold colors—such as green, blue, and red—and selected a soft petal pink for the occasion. Image consultant Marina Thomas explained the symbolic meaning behind the hue in a statement to Hello! magazine.
“This gentle pink shade is highly approachable and communicates peace,” Thomas said. “It’s a color that suggests safety and calmness.” She added that the rose pink, with its beige undertones, conveys neutrality and refinement—qualities ideal for a formal diplomatic event.
While the outfit didn’t incorporate the national colors of France or the UK, the pink tone was still seen as a respectful gesture. “It was an elegant and culturally considerate choice,” Thomas said, emphasizing how pink can still reflect a nation’s culture without overt symbolism.
A Silent Message at the State Banquet
The Princess of Wales continued to turn heads during the state banquet later that evening with another calculated fashion choice. She wore a striking dark red silk gown created by Sarah Burton for Givenchy—the same fashion house that designed Meghan Markle’s wedding dress in 2018.
According to the Daily Express, the gown might have been a subtle reference to Meghan once again, this time at a formal dinner. Kate, known for favoring British designers on such occasions, surprised many by selecting another French luxury label.
Completing her look at the banquet, Middleton wore the Lover’s Knot Tiara—her first time donning it since November 2023. The tiara, which has become one of her signature pieces, added a regal finish to the sophisticated evening ensemble.
Honoring Royal Women of the Past
As for her Dior look during Macron’s arrival, the Princess of Wales paid homage to two beloved members of the royal family through her accessories. She paired the ensemble with a pair of earrings once owned by Princess Diana and a necklace from Queen Elizabeth II’s personal collection, blending past and present in a deeply meaningful way.
According to Royal Insider, Kate’s Dior jacket came from the 2024 collection and is the ’30 Montaigne Rose Des Vents Bar’ style. The design, originally crafted by Christian Dior in 1947, was reimagined by Maria Grazia Chiuri, blending historic fashion with modern tailoring. With these carefully chosen pieces, Kate Middleton continues to navigate her royal role with a blend of elegance, symbolism, and diplomacy.
