Meghan Markle Apparently Invited Herself To Paris Fashion Week, Balenciaga Designer Tells It All

Meghan Markle’s surprise appearance at Balenciaga’s Paris Fashion Week show earlier this month turned heads, but new details suggest her connection to the brand’s creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, may not be as close as initially believed.

A Stunning Entrance in Paris

The Duchess of Sussex made her Paris Fashion Week debut wearing a sleek white button-down tunic with a flowing cape and matching slacks, accessorized with diamond earrings and a simple black clutch. Her refined look quickly went viral, marking her first major fashion week appearance since stepping back from royal duties in 2020.

After the event, Meghan’s representative told People that she was in Paris to “support” Pierpaolo Piccioli, who had just debuted his first Balenciaga collection since being appointed creative director in July.

Designer Reveals Meghan Reached Out

However, Pierpaolo later clarified to The Cut that it was Meghan who initiated contact about attending. “Meghan and I met some years ago, and we’ve been texting ever since,” he said. “She reached out and said she’d love to come to the show.”

The designer, 58, who was photographed warmly embracing Meghan at the event, insisted her appearance wasn’t part of any publicity plan. “There was no strategy or big orchestration,” he explained. “I didn’t tell anyone she was coming because I wanted it to stay a surprise. In fashion, real surprises are rare, and this one was beautiful.”

Support or Spotlight?

A spokesperson for Meghan maintained that her presence reflected “many years of artistry and friendship,” explaining she wanted to support Pierpaolo as he began his new chapter at Balenciaga. They also noted that Meghan has worn several of his designs and that the two have “worked closely together” at important moments in her life.

During her Suits years, Meghan frequently attended Toronto and New York Fashion Weeks, often spotlighting up-and-coming designers. In a 2023 New York Times interview, she said she chooses to wear pieces from designers she has “really great friendships” with or smaller brands that “deserve more attention.”

Controversy Around Balenciaga

Despite her intentions, Meghan’s support for Balenciaga drew criticism. The luxury brand has faced backlash since a controversial ad campaign showed children holding teddy bears dressed in bondage-inspired outfits. Following public outrage, the fashion house issued an apology, emphasizing that it “strongly condemns child abuse” and that the campaign’s imagery “was never our intent.”

Awkward Front-Row Moment

Adding to the drama, a viral video from the event appeared to show Meghan laughing after a model tripped on the runway. Royal commentator Charlotte Griffiths told GB News that the Duchess “covered it up” after realizing how “cruel” it might look. However, Meghan’s representative denied the accusation, telling the Daily Mail she was not laughing at the model.

Harry’s Reported Reaction

The trip to Paris also stirred emotions for Prince Harry. According to Daily Mail sources, the Duke was “hurt and upset” when Meghan faced criticism for sharing a video of herself stretching in a limo near the Pont de l’Alma tunnel—the site of Princess Diana’s fatal crash in 1997. Friends close to the couple insisted Meghan had no idea the video was filmed near the crash site, calling it “a hell of a stretch” to assume otherwise.

From Paris to New York

After the Balenciaga show, Meghan and Harry traveled to New York to attend Project Healthy Minds’ World Mental Health Day Gala, where they were honored as Humanitarians of the Year. During their speech, the couple discussed their work with The Archewell Foundation’s Parents Network, which supports families affected by social media harm.

“This is a pivotal moment in our collective mission to protect children and support families in the digital age,” Prince Harry said. “And we cannot do it without you.”

Meghan’s Paris appearance may have been meant as a gesture of friendship, but it once again proved how every move by the Duchess continues to spark fascination, debate—and controversy—on the world stage.
