President of NYU College Republicans resigns after ‘inappropriate’ Barron Trump remark

The College Republicans of America (CRA) has since released a statement addressing the situation.

The president of the New York University College Republicans has stepped down following remarks she made about Barron Trump during a recent interview.

Barron has been a student at New York University’s Stern School of Business since September, after graduating from Florida’s Oxbridge Academy in May.

However, on February 12, Kaya Walker, the president of NYU College Republicans, found herself at the center of controversy after commenting on Donald Trump’s youngest son’s presence on campus.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Walker referred to the 78-year-old president’s youngest son as “sort of like an oddity on campus,” explaining that Barron, 18, “goes to class, he goes home.”

She also mentioned that one of her professors had jokingly remarked that Barron “doesn’t really belong here,” alluding to the university’s traditionally liberal political environment.

A fellow student of Barron’s also shared an account of asking him to play basketball, saying Barron appeared interested but gave off the impression that “he wasn’t really allowed to do stuff,” as plainclothes Secret Service agents closely monitored him.

Following Walker’s remarks, the College Republicans of America (CRA) issued an official statement.

The statement begins: “In light of recent reports concerning the President of our New York University (NYU) chapter, College Republicans of America (CRA) wishes to address the situation directly.

“We have been made aware of a statement made by the NYU chapter President that does not align with the values and principles upheld by our organisation.”

While accusing Vanity Fair of “unfairly framing what was said,” the CRA also acknowledged: “Upon review, we still found it to be inappropriate. The NYU chapter President submitted her resignation last night.”

The statement, which was posted to X on February 17, continued: “CRA broke with 100 years of precedent when we endorsed President Trump, being the first national College Republican organisation to endorse a candidate before the beginning of the primary season.

“CRA proceeded to make more than one million voter contacts throughout the primary and general elections, sending hundreds of our students wherever the Trump campaign needed them.

“Our support for President Trump is, and has been, a pillar of our organisation.”

The statement also included an invitation from CRA President Will Donahue for Barron Trump to join the organisation.

“Barron Trump represents the future of the conservative movement, and we would be honoured to have him join College Republicans of America,” Donahue said.

“Strong leadership is built on resilience, courage, and the humility to rise above petty hostility – qualities that Barron has already demonstrated. We invite Barron to join us in shaping the future of our party.”

Besides Barron, whom he shares with Melania, Donald Trump has four other children from previous marriages: Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric Trump with Ivana Trump, as well as Tiffany Trump with Marla Maples.
