Sad truth behind Royal Family photo celebrating King Charles’ 70th birthday

Photos released to mark King Charles’ 70th birthday carry a deeper emotional weight, as many have now come to recognize a heartbreaking truth behind them.

It’s rare to see the senior members of the royal family all together in a posed portrait.

In fact, the composition of the so-called “senior royals” has shifted significantly over the last decade, particularly following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to step back from royal duties over five years ago.

Back in January 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they would be stepping away from their roles and relocating to the US to raise their family.

At the time, the late Queen Elizabeth II supported the move, saying there would be “a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK.”

In her statement, the Queen acknowledged the complexity of the situation: “These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.”

Now, five years later, Harry and Meghan have only returned to the UK occasionally, and the rift between them and the rest of the royal family appears unresolved.

One particular image, however, stands out from before the split—a family portrait released in 2018 to celebrate Charles’ 70th birthday.

It shows Charles and Camilla surrounded by Prince William, Kate Middleton, their three children—George, Charlotte, and Louis—as well as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Dressed in coordinated shades of white and blue, the group appears united and joyful. A more candid shot from the same session even shows the family laughing together, capturing what now feels like a fleeting moment of harmony.

Shortly after the birthday celebration, the BBC aired a documentary titled Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70.

In it, Harry spoke warmly about his father walking Meghan down the aisle at their wedding.

“I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, ‘Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs, and I’m here to support you,’” Harry recalled.

He continued: “For him, that’s a fantastic opportunity to step up and be that support, and you know he’s our father so of course he’s gonna be there for us.”

Despite these past gestures of closeness, it seems that the bond between father and son has yet to fully mend. The 2018 portrait may now stand as the last formal image of the family united—before everything changed.
