True extent of Kate’s cancer battle revealed

A startling new revelation has shed light on just how serious Princess Kate’s health ordeal was during her 2024 battle with cancer—one that she bravely kept private while continuing royal duties.

On June 15 last year, Kate attended Trooping the Colour, the King’s official birthday celebration, displaying her usual poise and elegance.

Beneath her elegant Jenny Packham dress, however, was a medical port implanted in her chest—used for administering chemotherapy and other treatments. At the time, no one outside the Palace knew just how gravely ill she was.

“Fortunate to Be Speaking of Recovery”

According to a newly published report by the Daily Mail’s royal editor Rebecca English, Kate’s illness was far more severe than previously disclosed. Though the Palace has remained silent about the type of cancer she had, it has now emerged that she required a semi-permanent port for her chemotherapy, which lasted for several weeks.

This device, placed under the skin near the heart, was a “literal lifeline,” English wrote, though not one that guarantees success—“even if you are a royal.”

One source reportedly said, “She is fortunate to even be speaking of recovery today.”

Even before her diagnosis, Kate was said to be “seriously unwell” and underwent major abdominal surgery in January.

It wasn’t until March that the princess personally shared the news that tests following the operation had found cancer, and that she was undergoing chemotherapy. For months after that announcement, public appearances ceased, and details were scarce—until now.

Behind the Palace Walls

While Kate seemed composed in public, behind the scenes she was enduring a harrowing treatment process. The Mail’s new report fills in some of the blanks from those quiet months and reveals how serious her condition truly was.

Adding to the speculation around her health, Kate recently canceled a scheduled appearance at Royal Ascot just 30 minutes before her expected arrival. The sudden move reportedly triggered “chaos” within royal circles and left staffers “worried and bewildered,” according to The Daily Beast.

Sources told English that the cancellation was a reminder of just how ill Kate had been and that recovery from chemotherapy can take years. Another insider said the incident was “a wake-up call, not a one-off,” and suggested that the princess is now reassessing her life and priorities after enduring several difficult years.

As a result, Kate is expected to significantly reduce her public appearances for the rest of 2024. While she is likely to attend Wimbledon in late June and appear during the French state visit in July, overall this could be a very quiet year for the Princess of Wales.

Plans for any international travel—including an overseas tour—remain tentative. William is scheduled to travel to Brazil in November for the Earthshot Prize ceremony, and while Kate’s attendance is still officially undecided, reports suggest she may not join him.

A Long Road to Full Recovery

While Kate may soon return to the public eye—possibly courtside at Wimbledon or alongside French President Emmanuel Macron—her recovery is far from over. Royal commentators say that while she may be “back,” it’s not the same as being fully recovered or ready to resume a full royal workload.

For now, the future Queen is expected to take a well-deserved break over the summer, spending quiet time with family in Norfolk and Scotland, focusing on rest and healing.

After what has been described as going “to hell and back,” one thing is clear: the Princess of Wales is taking the time she needs to heal—and she’s not rushing the journey.
