Meghan Markle has shocked royal watchers with a candid new Harper’s Bazaar profile—yet it was one surprising behind-the-scenes moment, not the interview itself, that sent social media into a frenzy.
A Surprising Detail That Ignited Online Outrage
The magazine revealed that Meghan is formally announced as the “Duchess of Sussex” every time she enters a room, a detail that even her most loyal admirers found startling.
The 44-year-old appears on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar’s December 2025/January 2026 Art Issue, participating in two lengthy conversations with writer Kaitlyn Greenidge about royalty, personal boundaries, motherhood, and her business ventures.
But despite the depth of the interviews, one brief encounter has dominated public conversation.
The Moment That Set the Internet Alight
During their second meeting in a “grand brownstone” on New York’s Upper East Side, Greenidge recalled waiting with the house manager while Meghan was getting ready upstairs.
Harry and Meghan were in the city to accept the Humanitarians of the Year Award from the mental-health charity Project Healthy Minds.
“When I enter, the house manager announces, ‘Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,’ even though we appear to be the only other two people in the house,” Greenidge wrote.
Meghan then led her to their interview spot on the second floor, which was reached “via a glass elevator in the living room.”

Fans Respond: Confusion, Criticism, and Disbelief
The anecdote instantly caught fire online. One Reddit user, who described themselves as a strong Meghan supporter, admitted: “I’m a huge Meghan defender but this is a bizarre thing to do when you only have a single guest. I’m sure the journo is fully aware and doesn’t need reminding of her title. I’m glad they not so subtly called it out.”
Others echoed the sentiment. “I love her, but that seems very excessive,” one person wrote, while another was puzzled as to why Meghan still uses her royal titles after stepping back from royal duties.
“I truly don’t understand. Didn’t she and Harry leave the royal family? Why do they keep their titles if they are not royals anymore?” one commenter asked.
They continued, “And why use those titles like they cared when they refused the function? It’s like leaving med school in the middle of the year and still asking everyone to call you doctor.”
Some responses were far harsher. One critic wrote: “Delusional! Having herself announced is supremely narcissistic, arrogant and totally pathetic behaviour.”
Another added: “Omg she has people announcing her title when she walks into the room like she’s Queen Elizabeth. She is the definition of pretentious.”
A Literary Moment Noted by Royal Reporters
Veteran royal journalist Tom Sykes also weighed in on the now-viral moment, calling Greenidge’s inclusion of the detail a brilliant stylistic choice.
“It is a masterfully delivered moment of satire,” he wrote on The Royalist Substack.
“Greenidge doesn’t have to comment; the absurdity speaks for itself. The acerbic observation contrasts neatly how Meghan wants the world to see her with how she actually appears.”

Another Formal Introduction in Los Angeles
Greenidge added that a similar scene unfolded during their first encounter in Los Angeles.
“A golf cart pulls up, the gravel crunching beneath its tires. ‘The Duchess of Sussex,’ someone in the scrum announces. Meghan descends, dressed in wide-leg trousers, a silk blouse, and a small pair of pavé-diamond studs by the Ukrainian brand Guzema,” she wrote.
The two later visited the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where Meghan paused mid-conversation to take a photo of her reflection in the foam of her cappuccino—an image showing her and Harry during their 2019 South Africa tour.
“It’s a lovely and absurd perk of celebrity, and Meghan is tickled enough to take a photo of it.”
Greenidge noted that Meghan appeared “remarkably at ease” with the “surrealism of global celebrity,” adding: “in fact, she seems to enjoy it.”
Commentators React
Sky News Australia’s Rita Panahi and Kinsey Schofield, host of Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered, were similarly stunned.
“People have to announce her official royal titles?! Let’s not forget she walked away from her official royal duties, so she’s got those titles without any sort of work—and yet she uses them to that extent? I doubt Prince William would be using them to that extent,” Panahi said.
Schofield agreed, saying that even Greenidge—whom she felt was “very generous to Meghan throughout the article”—seemed to find the moment strange.
“It is weird,” Panahi concluded.
