Part 3 of 3

“You don’t have to decide everything at once.”

“I know. But I do have to stop avoiding it.”

A few days later, Daniel asked whether I would agree to speak with Rachel. She had finally said she wanted to apologize in person.

I considered refusing.

But there was one question I needed her to answer.

“All right,” I told him. “She can come here. You’ll stay, and if I want the conversation to end, it ends.”

He agreed immediately.

That Saturday, Rachel arrived without her usual confident smile.

She glanced at my walker, then at the cushions supporting my back.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Hello, Rachel.”

She sat across from me and twisted her wedding ring.

“I never meant for you to get hurt.”

I studied her.

“Then what did you mean to happen?”

Rachel looked surprised.

“What?”

“You knew I was sitting down. You moved the chair. What were you hoping would happen?”

She shifted uncomfortably.

“I thought you’d get a little scare. Maybe everybody would laugh.”

“Everybody?”

“You know what I mean.”

“Would I have been laughing?”

She looked away.

“I don’t know.”

“Rachel, I couldn’t breathe when I hit that floor. I thought I’d broken my hip. You stood there laughing and told me to stop being dramatic.”

Her eyes filled.

“I panicked.”

“You may have panicked afterward. But you were laughing before you knew whether I was hurt.”

She said nothing.

I leaned back carefully.

“Who was supposed to find it funny?”

Rachel stared at her hands.

“I guess I thought everybody would.”

“And if I didn’t?”

She had no answer.

What Rachel Finally Admitted

For several minutes, Rachel tried to explain herself.

She said she’d been stressed. She said Daniel’s family never appreciated how much work she did. She said the children became excited whenever I visited, while she was always the parent who had to enforce rules.

“You get to bring pie and help with projects,” she said. “I’m the one making sure homework gets done and nobody leaves dirty dishes everywhere.”

“That’s true,” I replied. “Being a parent is harder than being a grandmother who visits on Sundays.”

She looked surprised that I agreed.

“Exactly. Sometimes it feels like everybody loves you, and I’m just the person telling them no.”

“Rachel, I’ve never tried to replace you.”

“Maybe not deliberately.”

I took a moment before answering.

“I’ve stopped offering advice because you thought I was criticizing you. I’ve declined invitations when you seemed uncomfortable. I’ve laughed at remarks that embarrassed me because I didn’t want Daniel caught between us.”

My voice trembled.

“I’ve made myself smaller in your home for seven years. And somehow, that still wasn’t enough.”

Rachel began crying.

“I didn’t know you felt that way.”

“I told you when something hurt me. You said I was too sensitive.”

She wiped her face.

“I was joking most of the time.”

“That’s the problem. You keep using that word as though it makes everything acceptable.”

Daniel finally spoke.

“Rachel, you told Megan what you were going to do. You knew Mom would be embarrassed.”

“I wasn’t thinking!”

“You were thinking enough to plan it.”

Rachel covered her face.

When she finally looked up, her expression had changed.

“You’re right. I knew she was about to sit down. I thought she’d look ridiculous for a second, and we’d all laugh. I didn’t think she’d get hurt.”

I nodded slowly.

It was the first time she’d admitted what she actually intended.

“Thank you for telling me the truth.”

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m sorry I moved the chair. I’m sorry I laughed. And I’m sorry I kept acting like you were making everything worse.”

I believed she regretted what had happened.

Whether she regretted hurting me or the consequences she’d faced, I couldn’t know.

“I appreciate the apology, Rachel. But I can’t pretend everything is fine.”

She nodded.

“I understand.”

“I won’t come to dinners where I’m treated like a joke. And I won’t apologize anymore for saying something hurts.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“There’s something else. Lily is afraid you’ll be angry with her for telling me what she heard.”

Rachel frowned.

“I would never punish my daughter for that.”

“She told us you’ve warned her not to repeat family business,” Daniel replied.

Rachel looked down.

“I didn’t mean she couldn’t tell you things.”

“Then you need to make that clear to her,” he said. “And you need to mean it.”

Rachel nodded, but Daniel wasn’t finished.

“I’m willing to work on our marriage. I’m not willing to go back to pretending none of this happened. We need counseling, and the kids need to feel safe talking to both of us.”

Rachel looked at him for a long moment.

“Are you saying I can’t come home?”

“I’m saying we have work to do before we make that decision.”

She began crying again.

I felt sorry for her. I also felt something unfamiliar: relief that I no longer had to comfort her at the expense of myself.

The Empty Chair

Six weeks after the fall, I was walking short distances without the walker. My hip still ached, especially in the mornings, but the physical therapist was pleased with my progress.

Daniel invited me to Sunday dinner.

I hesitated.

“Will Rachel be there?”

“No. She’s still staying with Megan. We’re going to counseling, and we’re figuring things out.”

“How are the children?”

“Better. Lily’s talking to me more. Noah keeps asking when you can come over for pie.”

I smiled.

“Then I suppose I’d better bring one.”

When I arrived, Lily opened the door and hugged me carefully.

“Grandma! I made something for you.”

She led me into the dining room.

On the table was a little handmade place card decorated with moons and stars. In her neat handwriting, it read:

Grandma’s Seat.

My throat tightened.

The wooden chair stood exactly where it had always been.

Daniel approached.

“Mom, we can move it somewhere else if you’d rather.”

I looked at the chair for a long moment.

“No, sweetheart. I’d like to sit here.”

He pulled it out carefully, then held it steady while I lowered myself.

Lily watched anxiously.

“Are you okay, Grandma?”

I looked up at her.

“I’m just fine, darling.”

And this time, I wasn’t pretending.

Noah brought me a napkin and asked whether the pie had pastry leaves again. Daniel began serving dinner, and Lily proudly told me she’d received an A on her science project.

We talked about school, the upcoming holidays, and Noah’s soccer team. Nobody made remarks about my age. Nobody asked me to laugh at something cruel.

Later, as I prepared to leave, Daniel helped me into my coat.

“I’m glad you came, Mom.”

“So am I.”

He hesitated.

“I know I can’t undo what happened.”

“No,” I said gently. “But you can keep doing what you’re doing now.”

He hugged me carefully.

Before leaving, I glanced back through the dining room doorway. Lily’s handmade place card was still resting beside my plate.

I didn’t know whether Rachel would earn my trust again, or what Daniel would ultimately decide about his marriage.

But that evening, I had returned to the table because I wanted to be there.

And when I sat down, the chair stayed exactly where it belonged.
