For years, Grant had treated corporate rules as technicalities because I rarely exercised the power they gave me.

Rebecca’s completed forensic report documented $1.9 million paid to Price Advisory Group and $470,000 in personal expenses concealed through development budgets.

The forged approval created the most serious consequence. Ten years earlier, after a former financial officer stole from Sterling Urban Development, Grant personally supported an amendment requiring immediate suspension of voting authority whenever an executive deliberately falsified approval for transactions exceeding $300,000.

He never imagined that provision might eventually apply to him.

My mother’s investment firm had rescued Sterling Urban Development during the financial crisis by providing $9.2 million in emergency capital. In exchange, Ward Capital received preferred voting shares that later transferred to me.

Grant owned thirty-seven percent of the company. I controlled forty-three percent, while outside investors held the remaining twenty percent.

He served as chief executive and managed daily operations. I oversaw acquisitions, financing, institutional partnerships, and philanthropic relationships through Ward Sterling Capital.

Publicly, we appeared equal. Privately, I allowed Grant to behave as though the company belonged exclusively to him because maintaining peace once seemed more valuable than correcting his pride.

Rebecca placed the audit upon her conference table.

“These documents provide leverage in the divorce and require immediate corporate disclosure.”

“I am not seeking revenge, although I need distance and protection for Grace.”

“Then we will request temporary residential stability, preserve the company records, and notify the independent directors.”

Our petition remained private while evidence continued accumulating.

Mallory soon published a photograph from a luxury resort in Jackson Hole, where Grant claimed to be attending a Denver real-estate conference. She wore his scarf while standing upon a snow-covered balcony.

The caption suggested that certain places felt like home before anyone officially moved into them.

The photograph disappeared twelve minutes later, although Benjamin, Grace, several directors, and half Boston’s charitable community had already seen it.

Benjamin telephoned from college.

“Mom, is Dad planning to leave you for Mallory?”

“Your father has already left this marriage in most ways that matter.”

“What are you going to do about the company and the house?”

I looked toward the coat beside the side entrance.

“I am going to complete what I began before they assumed I was powerless.”

Grant returned on Sunday carrying white roses, which he placed upon the kitchen island like decorative forgiveness.

“Mallory made a foolish mistake by publishing that picture.”

“She made the mistake of announcing your intentions before your lawyers prepared the language.”

He demanded that I stop calling her his mistress, although he could not supply a more accurate term without acknowledging the affair.

Eventually, he admitted that they cared deeply for one another and claimed our marriage had been failing for years.

People committing betrayal often use passive language because weather does not accept responsibility.

“I never wanted to hurt you, Helena.”

“Nevertheless, you continued after understanding exactly what your choices were doing.”

Grant suggested that we consider a respectful separation. His confidence returned because he believed the conversation belonged to his timeline.

His face emptied.

“You filed for divorce without discussing it with me first?”

“You developed another relationship without discussing that with me first, although my decision required considerably more documentation.”

Grant opened the temporary parenting proposal and accused me of stealing Grace.

“Her primary residence remains here because this is her home, school district, and medical network.”

“I live here as well.”

“Intermittently, whenever Mallory does not require strategic attention.”

His anger disappeared when he realized the petition referenced financial preservation orders.

“What else have you investigated?”

“That question sounds more frightened than innocent.”

Grant stared at me before whispering that I intended to destroy him.

“I intend to prevent you from destroying anything else that belongs to our children, investors, employees, or clients.”

Rebecca attended as outside counsel for Ward Capital, while forensic accountant Aaron Webb presented every transfer, reimbursement, and forged authorization.

Mallory sat beside Grant wearing the expression of someone inconvenienced by another woman’s emotional retaliation.

Board director Charles Kendall questioned her first.

“Did Price Advisory Group receive these payments while you simultaneously collected a full-time executive salary?”

“The consulting services extended beyond my ordinary responsibilities.”

“Please identify one deliverable produced under the largest agreement.”

Mallory opened a folder, searched through several pages, and failed to provide anything matching the invoice descriptions.

Grant interrupted, accusing me of manufacturing a corporate crisis because our marriage had ended.

Aaron displayed the electronic approval records.

My genuine signature history contained encrypted verification data, while the disputed approvals originated from Grant’s executive credentials after midnight.

The independent directors voted to suspend his voting authority and place him on administrative leave pending a complete investigation. Mallory was removed from all financial and partnership functions while her contracts underwent review.

Grant followed me into the corridor.

“You have allowed private resentment to endanger a company carrying my family’s name.”

“Your family supplied the name, while my mother supplied the capital that prevented bankruptcy.”

“You never cared about technical ownership until Mallory entered our lives.”

“I cared when you forged my authorization and transferred company funds to the woman replacing me.”

He stepped closer but stopped when Rebecca appeared.

“Helena, please remember that we built everything together.”

“I remember building it together, which is why watching you treat my contribution as disposable became impossible.”

The board scheduled a broader announcement for the Sterling Children’s Trust benefit three weeks later. Grant and Mallory nevertheless distributed invitations describing her as an incoming executive committee member.

Their audacity provided one final confirmation that consequences remained theoretical until delivered before witnesses.
