At The Gala, My Husband Moved Me Away From The Executive Table, Seated His Mistress Beside Him, And Publicly Announced That “Tonight Is About The Future.” He Thought I Would Walk Out. Instead, I Took The Microphone And Said, “Tomorrow Morning’s Board Meeting Has Been Moved To Eight.” That Was When His Smile Disappeared.

Part 2 of 3

Sienna wrote my name exactly that way on handwritten event cards.

By Wednesday, the forensic team had identified eight expense reports connected to investor meetings that either never occurred or had been seriously misrepresented.

Several clients confirmed they had not attended the supposed meetings.

One institutional investor became furious after discovering that nearly sixty thousand dollars in entertainment expenses had been associated with his name.

Then George Ellis called me personally.

George was an older investor who had known my father for years.

“Catherine, I haven’t been aboard a Bennett Aldridge aircraft in three years.”

I looked at the records in front of me.

“Your name appears on three manifests.”

“I was in Boston on every one of those dates.”

Then his tone changed.

“There’s something else you should know. Nathan has been telling people Prescott Meridian plans to reduce its voting position.”

My stomach tightened.

“That isn’t true.”

George hesitated.

“He’s been saying he’s preparing what he calls a modernization of the capital structure.”

That information transformed the entire investigation.

Dana obtained the materials prepared for Friday’s board meeting.

The real danger was buried on page seventy-two.

Nathan wanted to create a new executive voting class supposedly linked to management performance.

If the proposal passed, Prescott Meridian’s effective voting control would fall from fifty-two percent to approximately thirty-one percent.

A short note appeared beneath the proposal.

Prescott representative preliminarily supportive.

I stared at the words.

“Who exactly is the Prescott representative?”

Dana looked at me without emotion.

“According to their memorandum, you are.”

That was when everything became clear.

Nathan and Sienna had not merely been using my identity to disguise romantic trips.

Someone was preparing to use my supposed consent to strip my family of control over the company.

They had borrowed my name for private flights.

Now they intended to borrow my approval to take control of Bennett Aldridge Capital.

Part 4 — The Chair That No Longer Belonged to Me

Friday evening was Bennett Aldridge Capital’s anniversary gala at a luxury Manhattan hotel.

Earlier that day, Nathan informed me that Sienna would be seated beside him at the executive table.

He explained that the seating arrangement needed to reflect the company’s “new leadership structure.”

My own seat had been moved across the ballroom to a table occupied by spouses, retired donors, and charitable trustees.

For twelve years, I had sat beside Nathan at every significant company event.

Now his mistress was sitting in my chair.

I asked him:

“And you agreed to this?”

Nathan sighed as though I were exhausting him.

“Catherine, this is business.”

Something inside me settled.

The anger disappeared.

“Then I’ll sit wherever you want me to sit.”

His shoulders visibly relaxed.

“Thank you for not making everything difficult.”

I attended the gala alone.

I wore a black silk gown and my father’s watch.

Sienna stood next to Nathan at the executive table in emerald satin.

The $28,600 diamond bracelet glittered around her wrist.

She noticed me looking at it.

Then, quite deliberately, she touched it.

I said nothing.

I took my place at Table Nineteen.

My silence disturbed Nathan far more than anger ever could have.

Throughout dinner, I repeatedly caught him looking across the ballroom at me.

Shortly after nine o’clock, he walked onto the stage.

Nathan thanked the company’s investors.

He thanked the employees.

He thanked his mentors.

Then he thanked Sienna.

He never mentioned me.

Next, he announced that Sienna would be joining Bennett Aldridge’s executive leadership team during the following quarter.

The room applauded.

Nathan waited until the noise faded.

Then his eyes found mine.

“Growth requires change, professionally and sometimes personally.”

The ballroom became quieter.

“Catherine and I have shared many years together, but gradually our lives have moved in different directions.”

That was how Nathan chose to summarize twelve years of marriage.

Then he turned toward Sienna.

“Tonight is about the future.”

She smiled at him.

And in that moment, I realized something extraordinary.

Nathan was publicly announcing the end of our marriage before he had even discussed a separation with me privately.

He did not simply want freedom from our marriage.

He wanted replacing me to look like a victory.

Sienna joined him onstage and kissed his cheek in front of hundreds of guests.

Then Nathan handed her the microphone.

She looked perfectly composed.

“Sometimes the bravest choice is recognizing when something has completed its purpose.”

Then she turned her gaze directly toward me.

“Catherine has contributed to Nathan’s journey in ways I’m certain everyone appreciates.”

I stood.

For one magnificent second, Nathan and Sienna both assumed I was walking out.

Instead, I crossed the ballroom toward the stage.

Nathan immediately stepped down to intercept me.

“Catherine, not here.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“You chose here.”

His hand closed briefly around my wrist.

“Let go.”

He released me at once.

Sienna was still holding the microphone.

I extended my hand.

After a hesitation, she gave it to me.

Then I faced the room.

I could have exposed everything at that moment.

The flights.

The false expenses.

The forged signatures.

The affair.

The restructuring plan.

Instead, I remembered something my father had taught me years earlier.

Never waste leverage simply because anger makes using it feel satisfying.

So I smiled slightly and said:

“Nathan is correct about one thing.”

The ballroom became completely silent.

“Tonight is about the future. For that reason, tomorrow morning’s nine o’clock board meeting has been moved to eight.”

Across the room, the chief financial officer went visibly pale.

Nathan stared at me.

“What board meeting?”

I turned toward him.

“Apparently, the one nobody considered important enough to mention to you.”

Then I handed the microphone back to Sienna.

Before stepping away, I glanced at her wrist.

“Enjoy the bracelet.”

The color vanished from her face.

Part 5 — What Fifty-Two Percent Actually Meant

At 7:41 the next morning, I entered Bennett Aldridge Capital’s headquarters.

Dana was already waiting in the boardroom.

Outside counsel was present.

So were two forensic accountants, the chief financial officer, corporate counsel, and six directors.

Sienna arrived at 7:56.

Nathan entered three minutes later.

A folder had been placed in front of his chair.

SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BOARD — SHAREHOLDER NOTICE.

Nathan looked toward Dana.

“Who called this meeting?”

“Prescott Meridian Holdings.”

He leaned back in his chair.

“Catherine doesn’t represent Prescott Meridian.”

Nobody responded.

Dana opened the corporate register.

“Following Henry Prescott’s death, control passed under the Prescott succession trust to the designated successor voting authority.”

Nathan slowly turned his head toward me.

Dana continued.

“That voting authority is Catherine Prescott Bennett.”

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“You told me professionals managed the trust.”

I answered him.
