Part 2 of 3

“I feel a little less tired.”

Camille sat opposite him and crossed her legs.

“There’s a practical matter we need to address before your health becomes more serious.”

Nathaniel asked:

“What matter?”

“Your trust and estate documents should be revised. If anything unexpected happens, the company could end up trapped in litigation.”

Nathaniel almost smiled.

“That sounds reasonable.”

Relief appeared across her face.

“I can have our family attorney prepare revised documents by Friday.”

“Friday works.”

She leaned forward slightly.

“You’ll sign everything in front of him?”

Nathaniel replied:

“I’ll review everything carefully.”

Camille stood and adjusted the sleeve of her coat.

“I’ll tell Harriet to prepare a substantial steak dinner tonight. You’ve lost too much weight.”

Nathaniel answered:

“Laura has been preparing my food recently. I prefer her cooking.”

Camille stopped.

“Laura?”

“Yes. She understands what I like.”

Her eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly.

“That seems unusual.”

Nathaniel met her gaze.

“Why would that be unusual?”

Camille forced a smile.

“It isn’t unusual at all.”

She left quickly.

Nathaniel waited until her vehicle disappeared beyond the gate.

Then he called Jonah.

“She suspects Laura now.”

Jonah answered:

“Then we need to move the operation forward.”

Nathaniel explained:

“She’s bringing Adrian and the attorney here Friday morning.”

Jonah paused.

“If she realizes you’re recovering, she may act before then.”

“I know.”

“Should I notify law enforcement tonight?”

Nathaniel looked at a small glass vial containing some of the tablets he had preserved.

“Not yet.”

Jonah asked again:

“Are you sure?”

Nathaniel answered:

“I want them to arrive believing they’re collecting a dying man’s signature.”

That evening, Laura brought another safe meal.

Nathaniel told her about Friday.

She listened quietly, then said:

“Mateo is staying with my mother in Sacramento. He’ll stay there until this is over.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“That’s the safest decision.”

Laura clasped her hands together.

Nathaniel asked:

“Are you afraid?”

She answered honestly.

“Yes. But being afraid doesn’t make evil acceptable.”

Part 3 — The Trap Waiting in the Living Room

Friday morning arrived beneath a clear blue sky.

At exactly ten o’clock, a black Lincoln entered the estate and stopped near the front steps.

Camille stepped out first, wearing a dark tailored suit and carrying a small handbag.

Adrian Cole followed with a thick folder tucked beneath one arm.

Harriet stood in the entry hall, pretending to arrange flowers.

Nathaniel waited in the living room with his shoulders slightly lowered and a blanket covering his knees.

Nobody knew he could now walk.

Earlier that morning, he had already completed several slow laps around his bedroom.

Thirty minutes before Camille arrived, Thomas Reed, Nathaniel’s personal attorney of ten years, had delivered the evidence package to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

Laura’s sworn statement.

The laboratory analysis.

The preserved tablets.

The suspicious bank transfers.

Jonah’s recordings.

Everything was now in official custody.

Camille entered the living room with a carefully controlled smile.

“You seem ready for an important conversation.”

Nathaniel answered:

“I’m ready to discuss the future.”

Adrian placed his folder on the coffee table.

“The documents are straightforward, Nathaniel. They preserve the company, protect your charitable commitments, and make sure Camille receives appropriate control if your health continues deteriorating.”

Nathaniel looked at him.

“Appropriate control sounds intentionally vague.”

Adrian replied:

“Your condition requires practical decisions.”

At that moment, Thomas entered from the adjoining study.

He placed three sealed evidence folders beside Adrian’s paperwork.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Thomas spoke first.

“Before my client reviews any estate documents, we need to discuss what is contained in these folders.”

Camille turned toward him.

Her irritation was obvious.

“Who invited you?”

Thomas answered:

“Nathaniel did.”

He opened the first folder.

“This contains a forensic analysis confirming high-dose warfarin in tablets delivered to Mr. Brooks during his illness.”

Harriet’s face lost all color.

Thomas opened the second folder.

“These records show payments from Adrian Cole’s shell company into an account held by Harriet’s sister.”

Adrian slowly removed his hand from the documents he had brought.

Thomas opened the third.

“This contains Laura Hayes’s sworn testimony and audio recordings concerning the medication schedule.”

Camille stared at the evidence.

“This is an outrageous fabrication.”

Nathaniel remained seated while watching her confidence disappear.

He said:

“You repeatedly told me I was dying. You wanted to discuss my trust because you assumed my mind had deteriorated along with my body.”

Camille touched her wedding ring.

“You were sick, Nathaniel. You must have taken your medication incorrectly, and now you’re inventing some conspiracy.”

Nathaniel replied:

“Harriet delivered every dose.”

At that moment, Harriet dropped the serving tray in her hands.

Porcelain shattered across the floor.

She began crying.

“I didn’t know the tablets were dangerous. Camille told me they were prescribed supplements.”

Camille turned on her.

“Be quiet, Harriet.”

That command destroyed the final appearance of unity between them.

Harriet began sobbing harder.

“She told me he wouldn’t survive the month. She promised me one hundred thousand dollars after the insurance settlement.”

Adrian stood abruptly.

“This meeting is over. I’m calling my lawyer.”

Nathaniel looked at him.

“You should call him immediately, especially before investigators start examining the Delaware accounts linked to your companies.”

Adrian’s complexion turned gray.

Camille looked at him in disbelief.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that Adrian had never intended to protect her.

She had never truly trusted him either.

Their relationship had been built from greed, fear, and mutual calculation.

Then the estate’s front doors opened.

Several San Mateo County investigators entered with uniformed officers.

Jonah followed them.

A forensic specialist carried sealed evidence bags.

The lead investigator announced:

“Camille Brooks, Adrian Cole, and Harriet Whitcomb, you are being detained while this investigation continues.”

Camille demanded an attorney.

Adrian started asking questions nobody answered.

Harriet kept talking rapidly, volunteering everything she remembered in the hope of receiving leniency.

Nathaniel did not watch them being taken away.

He sat near the window, exhausted but alive, while the estate that had felt like a prison filled with official footsteps, camera shutters, and voices documenting the truth.

Part 4 — What Survival Cost

Laura entered the living room later that afternoon wearing jeans, a plain blouse, and the worried expression she had carried since the first warning.

She stopped near the doorway.

“May I come in?”

Nathaniel gestured toward a chair.

“Please sit down.”

Laura held a folder against her chest.

“I finished my statement with the investigators.”

Nathaniel asked:

“Did they treat you respectfully?”
