“I Swear I’ve Never Had A Relationship With Her.” My Husband Said While The Pregnant Woman Stood Across From Us, Refusing To Back Down. I Wanted To Believe The Man I Had Loved For Twelve Years, But Her Confidence Made Me Doubt Everything.

Part 2 of 3

The phone call.

The financial support from Margaret.

Andrew’s expression shifted from confusion to alarm.

“She actually came into your examination room and told you I fathered her child?”

I nodded.

He sat down heavily.

“Evelyn, I swear I have never had a relationship with that woman. I’ve repeatedly told her to stop contacting me.”

I asked why he had never mentioned her messages.

Andrew rubbed his jaw.

“She started making accusations several weeks ago. I thought if I ignored her, eventually the harassment would stop.”

I stared at him.

“You knew a stranger was threatening to involve your mother and claim you fathered her child, and you decided your wife didn’t need to know?”

He lowered his eyes.

“I was afraid telling you would cause another confrontation with Mom. I handled this terribly.”

Andrew had avoided conflict with Margaret for years.

Whenever she criticized my demanding career or accused me of stealing her son, he changed the subject instead of defending me.

His reluctance had gradually become an accepted part of our marriage.

Now that habit had exposed us to something far more serious.

“Avoiding a problem doesn’t make it disappear, Andrew. Keeping me uninformed meant I had to face that woman without knowing anything about her threats.”

He apologized without making another excuse.

After hearing his explanation, I believed his denial more strongly.

But I was still furious about his secrecy.

We agreed to visit Margaret that evening.

If Paige was exploiting her financially, we needed to understand the arrangement.

But I also wanted to know why Margaret seemed so eager to believe a stranger over her own son.

Part 4 — The Trap Behind My Mother-in-Law’s Tears

Margaret welcomed Andrew warmly when we arrived.

She hugged him for almost a full minute.

Then she acknowledged me with a restrained nod.

Her living room smelled of lemon furniture polish and fresh tea.

Andrew sat across from her and explained that Paige had been making false claims about a relationship and pregnancy.

Margaret waved dismissively.

“That poor girl has done nothing but help me, Andrew. I don’t understand why you’re letting Evelyn treat her like some criminal.”

I remained calm.

“Has Paige asked you for money, Margaret? Have you been paying her expenses?”

Margaret lifted her chin.

“Even if I have helped her financially, that is my decision. I do not need your permission to support someone who actually cares about me.”

Andrew leaned forward.

“Mom, we’re worried somebody may be taking advantage of your loneliness. If you need help at home, we can arrange professional assistance.”

Her expression changed immediately.

Her shoulders dropped.

She reached for a tissue and began describing how difficult daily tasks had become.

The stairs frightened her.

Evenings felt unbearably lonely.

Then she looked directly at me.

“If Paige isn’t welcome anymore, perhaps I’ll simply have to move into your house. Unless you’d rather abandon your own mother in some miserable nursing facility.”

I felt the manipulation settle over the room.

Andrew looked uncomfortable.

“Nobody is abandoning you, Mom. We only want to discuss arrangements that would keep you safe.”

Margaret dabbed at her eyes.

“I gave my entire life to raising you, Andrew. Now I’m apparently expected to beg for somewhere to belong.”

I suggested we explore home-care services and other options without making immediate decisions about moving in together.

Margaret accused me of being coldhearted.

As the conversation continued, something began bothering me.

Margaret never asked whether Andrew was actually the father of Paige’s baby.

She seemed strangely uninterested in proving or disproving an accusation that supposedly threatened her son’s marriage.

Instead, every discussion returned to her desire to move into our house.

When we finally left, Andrew looked shaken.

“Maybe Mom really does need more support than we realized.”

I agreed that she deserved appropriate care.

“But moving into our home is not something she gets to demand simply because she doesn’t like the alternatives.”

As we reached the driveway, I remembered another question I wanted to ask.

I told Andrew to wait by the car while I went back toward the house.

The front door had not completely closed.

From the hallway, I heard Margaret speaking on the phone.

Her voice sounded nothing like the fragile, tearful voice she had used with us moments earlier.

She was angry.

“I specifically told you not to approach Evelyn until I had everything arranged!”

I stopped.

Margaret continued.

“Your job was to make her doubt Andrew, not march into her medical practice announcing you’re pregnant with his child!”

My heart began pounding.

I quietly started recording.

Margaret said:

“If Evelyn had demanded a paternity test, the whole arrangement would have collapsed, Paige. I promised to support you and the baby until you were settled, but you were supposed to follow my instructions.”

I could barely believe what I was hearing.

Margaret was not being manipulated by Paige.

She had hired Paige to manipulate us.

Her plan was to make me doubt Andrew.

To push me out of the marriage.

To remove the woman she believed had taken her son away.

I quietly stepped outside and hurried toward the car.

Part 5 — The Recording That Exposed Everything

Andrew was leaning against the car when I returned.

He immediately straightened when he saw my face.

“Evelyn, what happened? You look like somebody just told you something terrible.”

I explained what I had overheard.

Before I could finish, he shook his head.

“My mother wouldn’t invent a pregnancy to destroy our marriage. She can be difficult, but she would never do something like that.”

I did not argue.

I simply played the recording.

Margaret’s voice filled the quiet driveway.

Andrew stood completely still.

As the conversation continued, disbelief disappeared from his face and was replaced by horror.

When the recording ended, he lowered his head.

For several moments, neither of us spoke.

Finally, he whispered:

“I spent years defending her because I thought she was lonely and afraid of losing me.”

I placed my hand on his arm.

“She may genuinely be lonely, Andrew. But loneliness does not excuse paying someone to destroy another person’s marriage.”

He looked back toward the illuminated windows.

Then he straightened.

“We’re going back inside. I need to ask her why she thought she had the right to do this.”

We entered the living room together.

Margaret looked surprised.

“Andrew, sweetheart, did you forget something?”

He remained standing.

“Did you pay Paige to tell Evelyn that I was the father of her baby?”

Margaret dismissed the accusation as ridiculous.

I played the recording again.

Her expression changed instantly.

She looked at my phone.
