“What Are You Doing Here? With Him?” My Husband Demanded After Seeing Me Step Out Of The CEO’s Mercedes. I Looked At The Woman He Had Just Been Kissing Beside The Pool And Said, “I Was About To Ask You The Same Thing—Considering Your Conference Was Supposed To Be In Denver.”

Part 3 of 3

Later, Nathaniel confirmed that Northstar intended to preserve the submitted records and cooperate with properly authorized investigations.

He made no promises about the final outcome.

Our business might survive independently, find another buyer, or require significant restructuring.

For once, uncertainty felt preferable to a convenient lie.

As I left the resort, I noticed Adrian watching from an upper balcony.

He held his phone motionlessly.

I wondered whether he was frightened of losing his fortune, his reputation, or control over me.

I would soon discover that the disputed acquisition was only part of something considerably darker.

Part 6: The Eighteen-Million-Dollar Policy

At seven thirty that evening, my corporate controller, forty-six-year-old Teresa Morgan, called while I packed for my flight home.

She had worked for Parker House Hospitality nearly five years and rarely sounded emotional.

This time, her voice trembled.

“Evelyn, I’ve found an insurance file that wasn’t included in any of the financial records previously provided to me.”

The folder concerned key-person life insurance.

The proposed insured individual was me.

The amount was eighteen million dollars.

I sat on the bed.

“I never consented to an eighteen-million-dollar policy on my life, Teresa.”

The paperwork contained what appeared to be an insured-consent form bearing my signature.

It also included an amended stock-redemption agreement addressing the disposition of my shares if I died.

The proposed beneficiary was a holding company controlled by Adrian.

Neither a key-person insurance proposal nor a corporate redemption agreement automatically proved criminal intent.

But I had never authorized these arrangements, and the timing was deeply disturbing.

The signatures would require authentication.

The insurer would also have to confirm whether any policy had actually been issued.

Rebecca advised immediate preservation of the evidence and a formal report concerning suspected document falsification.

She urged me to remain somewhere secure and avoid meeting Adrian alone.

Then a junior administrative employee named Linda Cooper called.

She had discovered a travel itinerary in a restricted company folder.

It contained my return-flight details, personal information, and a planned vehicle pickup.

Beneath the itinerary was a note referring to an insurance claim.

Linda sounded terrified.

“Please don’t use the car arranged in that file, Mrs. Parker. I don’t know who ordered it, but something about those documents is very wrong.”

Before I could ask who had prepared the itinerary, a man’s voice interrupted her.

The connection ended abruptly.

I immediately called Rebecca.

She returned to my room and contacted local law enforcement.

We canceled my original transportation arrangements while retaining the evidence.

Then an unknown number sent a photograph to my phone.

It showed me outside Hawthorne Estate, accepting Nathaniel’s hand beside his Mercedes.

Somebody had photographed us from behind the landscaping.

A message appeared beneath it.

You should never have left Sonoma.

Another photograph followed.

It showed the eighteen-million-dollar insurance paperwork, with a handwritten note suggesting that an earlier plan had been exposed and the location needed to change.

My hands went cold.

Rebecca instructed me not to delete anything.

Then my phone rang.

When I answered on speaker, a calm male voice accused me of creating unnecessary complications.

“You should have signed the documents when you were asked, Mrs. Parker.”

I demanded his identity.

He refused.

“Your husband may be foolish, but he’s not the person you should fear most.”

The call ended.

Almost immediately, somebody knocked three times on our door.

A male voice claimed to be hotel security.

Rebecca asked him to identify himself and requested confirmation through reception.

He didn’t answer.

Instead, the door handle turned slowly.

The lock held.

Footsteps retreated down the corridor.

When reception finally confirmed that no security officer had been sent to our room, Rebecca renewed her urgent request for police assistance.

I wrapped both arms protectively around my belly.

For the first time, my fear was no longer confined to losing a marriage or a business.

Part 7: The Name on the Emergency Transfer

One final photograph arrived while we waited for the officers.

It showed a folder containing the disputed acquisition authorization, the insurance documents, and a medical admission form bearing my name.

The document beneath them was more alarming.

It appeared to authorize an emergency medical transfer scheduled for five thirty the following morning.

The destination wasn’t a hospital in Minneapolis.

It was a private medical facility in Northern California.

My pregnancy details, expected delivery date, and other confidential medical information had been included.

The authorization carried the name of the physician who had examined me on Friday.

Dr. Amelia Foster.

I stared at the signature.

“Rebecca, that’s my obstetrician. She saw me yesterday and told me our daughter was developing normally.”

Rebecca examined the image without reaching a conclusion.

“We need to verify the document and contact her through an independently confirmed number.”

Before we could call, my phone displayed the number of Dr. Foster’s clinic.

I answered with trembling hands.

Her voice sounded breathless.

“Evelyn, somebody has accessed my medical account without permission, and I need you to understand something immediately.”

I struggled to speak.

“Did you authorize an emergency transfer for me tomorrow morning?”

“Absolutely not. I never ordered any transfer, and I’m reporting the unauthorized access right now.”

Then she explained that the intruder had apparently accessed not only my medical file but also confidential prenatal information concerning my unborn daughter.

My mind raced through every unanswered question.

Who had created the false authorizations?

Who knew my travel plans?

Who stood to benefit if I disappeared?

And why was somebody attempting to arrange a medical transfer that my own physician knew nothing about?

Rebecca reached toward the telephone to update the police.

Then a faint sound came from behind us.

The glass balcony door had begun sliding open.

I turned slowly, one hand supporting my pregnant belly and the other gripping Rebecca’s arm.

Whatever was happening had moved beyond the disputed company sale.

Someone had gained access to our financial records, my private medical information, and the location where I was supposed to sleep.

And as the balcony door continued opening behind us, I realized that whoever had constructed those documents might already be inside the room.

THE END
