The Night My Husband Chose Someone Else

For the first hour after my daughter entered the world, I tried not to think about my husband.

Outside the hospital windows, heavy summer rain swept across Richmond, Virginia, turning the streets into shining ribbons beneath the early-morning lights. Inside my room, everything felt strangely quiet.

My newborn daughter rested against my chest, wrapped in a soft white blanket.

She had a tiny crease between her eyebrows, dark hair that refused to lie flat, and fingers so small they could barely curl around mine.

I stared at her and whispered, “Welcome to the world, Lucy.”

My younger sister, Phoebe, sat beside the bed with exhausted eyes and a paper cup of coffee she had forgotten to drink.

“Lucy?” she asked.

I nodded.

“Lucy Mae Bennett.”

The moment I said the last name, something inside me settled.

Not Carver.

Bennett.

My maiden name.

Phoebe understood immediately.

Her eyes filled, but she did not try to change my mind.

Only seven hours earlier, I had called my husband, Nathan Carver, again and again while contractions grew stronger and the storm made driving almost impossible.

He never answered.

Then, at 2:46 in the morning, someone finally picked up his phone.

It was not Nathan.

It was Taryn Caldwell, the woman he had repeatedly described as nothing more than a colleague.

Her voice had been irritated rather than concerned.

“Elise, Nathan is dealing with something important tonight. You need to stop calling every five minutes.”

I had stared at the phone in disbelief.

“I’m having his baby.”

There had been a pause.

Then Taryn said something I knew I would remember for the rest of my life.

“You’re at a hospital. You’re surrounded by people whose job is to handle this.”

Then the call ended.

Nathan never called back.

The Doctor Who Noticed Too Much

Dr. Elias Hartley had been called into the hospital because the storm had delayed another physician.

He was in his early forties, calm without seeming distant, and had the unusual ability to enter a stressful room without making it feel smaller.

After Lucy was born, he returned to check on us.

“How are you feeling?” he asked.

I gave a tired laugh.

“Physically or emotionally?”

“Whichever answer you’re ready to give.”

Phoebe crossed her arms.

“Emotionally, she has a husband who should probably reconsider showing his face anywhere near this building.”

“Phoebe.”

“I’m being polite.”

Dr. Hartley almost smiled.

Then he examined Lucy, listened to her breathing and spoke softly while she fussed.

“You had quite an entrance, little one.”

His kindness should have comforted me.

Instead, it made Nathan’s absence hurt more.

After he finished, I asked, “Did everyone outside hear what happened?”

He hesitated.

That was answer enough.

My face burned.

“Wonderful.”

Dr. Hartley closed the chart.

“Elise, another person’s choices do not become a definition of you.”

I looked at him.

There was something in his expression that made me curious.

Not pity.

Recognition.

Before I could ask what he meant, someone knocked on the door.

Nathan had finally arrived.

And Taryn was standing beside him.

The Father Who Arrived Too Late

Nathan looked almost exactly as he had the previous afternoon.

Same navy trousers.

Same expensive watch.

Same blue dress shirt, now wrinkled at the collar.

He did not look like a frightened new father who had spent the night trying desperately to reach his wife.

Taryn wore a pale gray coat and stood close enough to him that no explanation was necessary.

Phoebe rose immediately.

“She is not coming into this room.”

Nathan ignored her.

His eyes landed briefly on Lucy before turning toward me.

“Elise, we need to discuss what happened last night.”

I stared at him.

“What happened last night?”

His jaw tightened.

“You called repeatedly. You contacted people from my office. You created a scene while I was handling an important situation.”

I thought I had misunderstood him.

“I was in labor.”

“And you were already at a hospital.”

Phoebe slowly put down her coffee.

“Nathan, I strongly recommend you stop speaking.”

Taryn sighed.

“This is exactly the problem. Everything becomes much bigger than it needs to be.”

I turned toward her.

“You answered my husband’s phone at two forty-six in the morning.”

She said nothing.

“So perhaps you shouldn’t be giving me advice about appropriate behavior.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“Enough. I came here because I wanted us to talk calmly.”

Lucy stirred at the sound of his voice.

Nathan glanced toward her but did not approach the bassinet.

That small hesitation hurt more than I expected.

Then Dr. Hartley walked back into the room.

The instant Nathan saw him, something changed.

His shoulders stiffened.

The confidence disappeared from his face for half a second.

Dr. Hartley looked from Nathan to Taryn.

Then he said, “Mrs. Bennett needs rest. If this conversation is upsetting her, it can happen another time.”

Nathan frowned.

“Mrs. Bennett?”

I answered before the doctor could.

“That’s what Lucy and I will be using.”

Nathan stared at me.

Then he finally noticed what I had already decided.

His daughter would not carry his last name.

The Secret Nathan Could No Longer Hide

Nathan turned back to Dr. Hartley.

“Do I know you?”

“We’ve met.”

Taryn suddenly looked uncomfortable.
