So did Phoebe.

I looked at Elias.

“How do you know them?”

Nathan spoke quickly.

“That has nothing to do with us.”

It was such a familiar sentence.

For ten years, Nathan had decided which questions were reasonable, which concerns were embarrassing and which conversations should end before they inconvenienced him.

That morning, I stopped allowing it.

“I’m asking him.”

Dr. Hartley looked at Nathan.

“You should tell her yourself.”

Taryn whispered, “Nathan, don’t.”

My stomach turned.

I looked at her carefully.

For the first time, I noticed how her coat fell loosely around her middle.

The way her hand had drifted there twice.

A possibility I had refused to consider suddenly became obvious.

“Are you expecting a baby?” I asked.

No one spoke.

Taryn lowered her eyes.

Nathan rubbed a hand across his face.

Finally, she answered.

“Almost five months.”

Phoebe inhaled sharply.

I looked at Nathan.

“Is it yours?”

He did not answer.

He didn’t need to.

I felt something inside me go completely still.

Only weeks earlier, Nathan had complained that my pregnancy made me too emotional.

He had skipped appointments because work was demanding.

He had told me we needed to save money before buying a better stroller.

Meanwhile, he had been building another future in secret.

Nathan stepped toward the bed.

“Elise, I never meant for things to happen this way.”

I looked at him.

“Interesting. Because from where I’m sitting, you made hundreds of choices to get here.”

The Woman Who Had Seen His Other Side

After Nathan and Taryn left, Dr. Hartley remained quiet for a moment.

Then I asked him the question I had been waiting to ask.

“What else do you know?”

He pulled a chair closer.

“My younger sister, June, worked for Nathan’s company last year.”

I frowned.

“What happened?”

“She raised concerns about expense accounts, private travel being recorded as business travel, and several payments she couldn’t explain.”

My pulse quickened.

“Taryn was involved?”

He nodded.

June had worked in financial operations.

When she questioned several transactions approved by Nathan and submitted through Taryn’s department, her access was suddenly restricted.

A few weeks later, she was blamed for administrative problems she insisted she had not caused.

Eventually, she resigned.

“She kept copies of some records,” Elias said. “Not enough to explain everything, but enough that Nathan became very uncomfortable whenever her name came up.”

I thought about the vacations Nathan called conferences.

The mysterious credit card statements.

The nights he told me not to worry about company finances because I would not understand them.

Suddenly, those memories looked different.

“Can I speak with June?”

Elias studied me.

“You gave birth this morning.”

“I noticed.”

That earned the smallest smile.

“I’ll ask her.”

The Message That Changed Everything

June Hartley visited the following afternoon.

She was thirty, soft-spoken and cautious, with the posture of someone who had learned that telling the truth could have consequences.

She carried a small laptop and a folder.

For nearly two hours, she showed me dates, reimbursements, hotel receipts and internal emails.

Nathan had approved expensive trips that apparently had little to do with clients.

Taryn had received unusually generous reimbursements.

Several vendors appeared on company records even though June could find almost no evidence of what services they actually provided.

But one screenshot hurt more than all the financial records.

It was a message Taryn had sent Nathan months earlier.

Elise is focused on the baby. She won’t notice.

Nathan had replied:

She notices more than you think. But she won’t leave. She depends on this life too much.

I stared at those words until they stopped looking like English.

He won’t leave.

Not because he loved me.

Not because he believed our marriage could survive anything.

Because he believed I had nowhere else to go.

I looked at Lucy sleeping beside me.

Then I handed the laptop back to June.

“What do we do next?”

The Quiet Woman Nathan Had Misjudged

Phoebe’s husband, Owen, was a civil attorney.

He arrived that evening and reviewed the records with June.

When he finished, he leaned back in his chair.

“Elise, these documents raise serious questions. I can’t tell you what an investigation would conclude, but you need to protect your finances immediately.”

So I did.

I changed passwords.

I separated my personal savings.

I requested copies of tax records and account statements.

I documented everything.

Most importantly, I stopped arguing with Nathan.

He called more than twenty times over the next day.

I ignored nineteen.

I answered the twentieth.

“Elise, people are putting ideas in your head.”

“No. They are finally giving me information.”

“You are making decisions while you’re exhausted.”

“I spent years making decisions while trusting you. That turned out much worse.”

His voice hardened.

“You don’t want to make me your enemy.”

I looked at Lucy sleeping on my sister’s couch.

“Nathan, I don’t need an enemy. I need distance.”

Then I ended the call.

The File He Never Expected Me to Find

Two days later, June found another set of documents saved in an old company archive.

Among them was a substantial life insurance policy Nathan had arranged months earlier.

That alone was not necessarily suspicious.

Married couples bought insurance every day.
