A Sick 63-Year-Old Millionaire Found a Struggling Mother and Her 5-Year-Old Son Shivering Beside a Freezing Vermont Road and Brought Them Home. “We’ll Be Gone Tomorrow,” She Promised. But the Next Morning, He Opened the Guest-Room Door, Saw What the Little Boy Was Holding—and Immediately Called His Attorney

Part 2 of 3

“I’m protecting you.”

But Walter knew his nephew.

Grant was not worried about the house.

He was worried about who might inherit it.

What Toby Was Holding

The following morning, Walter walked past the guest room and noticed the door slightly open.

Toby was sitting cross-legged on the floor.

He was holding something.

Walter stopped.

It was an old photograph.

His photograph.

Toby looked up nervously.

“I’m sorry. It fell out of a book.”

Walter entered the room.

The picture showed Walter at thirty-two with his younger brother, Thomas.

Thomas had been Grant’s father.

Walter had not looked at that photograph in years.

Toby pointed at Thomas.

“Is that your brother?”

Walter nodded.

“He passed away a long time ago.”

Toby studied the picture.

“You look happy.”

The simple observation landed harder than Walter expected.

“I was.”

Toby handed him the photograph carefully.

Then Walter noticed something else.

A folded piece of paper had fallen from the back.

He opened it.

It was an old handwritten note from Thomas.

Walter had forgotten it existed.

Most of the message was ordinary, but one sentence stopped him.

“If anything ever happens to me, don’t let Grant grow up believing the estate matters more than the people inside it.”

Walter sat down slowly.

Toby watched him.

“Are you sad?”

Walter looked at the little boy.

“No. I think I just remembered something important.”

He walked downstairs and called his attorney.

The Call That Frightened Grant

Grant arrived again that afternoon.

This time, he was furious.

“You called your attorney?”

Walter looked up from his desk.

“How did you know?”

Grant paused.

That hesitation told Walter more than the answer.

“The family office mentioned some documents were being reviewed.”

Walter leaned back.

“Interesting.”

Grant tried to recover.

“What are you changing?”

“Why does it matter?”

“Because I’m your family.”

Walter studied him.

“Are you asking about me or my will?”

Grant’s face reddened.

“That’s unfair.”

Walter had heard enough.

For years, Grant had visited more frequently whenever Walter’s health declined.

He called after medical appointments, but somehow every conversation eventually wandered toward property, investments, or “protecting the family legacy.”

Walter had ignored it because Grant was his brother’s only son.

Now he began asking questions.

What the Attorney Found

Walter’s attorney, Meredith Sloan, reviewed several years of financial records.

What she found surprised even Walter.

Grant had accumulated enormous personal debts through failed investments and expensive business ventures.

He had borrowed against assets he did not own.

More concerning, he had repeatedly spoken with advisers about what might happen to Walter’s estate after his death.

One proposed deal depended heavily on Grant receiving property he had no legal right to control yet.

Walter stared at the documents.

“How much does he owe?”

Meredith gave him the number.

Walter removed his glasses.

“And he never told me.”

“No.”

Suddenly Grant’s concern about Mallory made sense.

He wasn’t protecting Walter from her.

He was protecting an inheritance he had already mentally spent.

Mallory Makes a Decision

Mallory accidentally overheard part of an argument between Walter and Grant.

That evening, she packed.

Walter found her placing Toby’s clothes into a small suitcase.

“What are you doing?”

“Leaving.”

“Your car isn’t ready.”

“We’ll manage.”

Walter frowned.

Mallory looked embarrassed.

“Your nephew thinks we’re here because of your money. I don’t want to be the reason your family fights.”

Walter shook his head.

“You aren’t the reason.”

“Maybe not, but we’re making it worse.”

Toby stood beside the bed clutching his small backpack.

Walter felt something unexpectedly painful.

The house was about to become silent again.

Mallory zipped the suitcase.
