After 25 Years of Marriage, My Husband Smiled as He Signed Our Divorce Papers While His Mother Prepared to Welcome His 34-Year-Old Girlfriend Into Our $850,000 Home. They Thought I Was Leaving With Nothing. But Three Days Later, a Real Estate Agent Arrived and Asked One Question That Turned Their Celebration Into a Nightmare…

Part 2 of 3

“Next weekend, we’re celebrating our new beginning,” she announced.

Thomas laughed.

“It’s about time.”

I had returned to the house only to collect the last of my personal belongings under our agreed arrangements.

Barbara watched as I carried a suitcase toward the door.

“Make sure you don’t leave anything behind,” she said. “I don’t want you making excuses to come back.”

Thomas stood beside her.

“And don’t expect me to keep supporting you, Rebecca.”

I looked around the living room one final time.

The curtains I had chosen. The family photographs I had arranged. The dining table where Madeline had celebrated every birthday.

For twenty-five years, I had tried to make that house feel like a loving home.

Now I understood that a beautiful building could still be a lonely place.

“Goodbye, Thomas.”

He barely acknowledged me.

I walked outside and closed the door.

Inside my handbag was a copy of the recorded deed and the signed purchase agreement.

They thought I had lost everything.

But the truth was waiting just around the corner.

The Question That Silenced the Entire Family

Three days later, Graham called me.

“Rebecca, I’m at the property with the buyer’s representative. Thomas is refusing to discuss the closing arrangements.”

I wasn’t surprised.

“Has anyone explained the ownership documents to him?”

“We’re about to.”

Graham later told me what happened.

Thomas had opened the door looking irritated.

“Why are you here? We’re not selling this house.”

The buyer’s representative, a real estate attorney named Peter Whitaker, calmly opened his folder.

“Mr. Sullivan, before we discuss the closing, may I ask you something?”

Thomas folded his arms.

“What?”

“Have you checked whose name is actually on the recorded deed?”

Thomas laughed.

“My father owned this house. I’m his son.”

Peter placed a copy of the public property record on the table.

“Your father transferred ownership to Rebecca Sullivan five years ago. The deed was recorded. She is the owner listed in the county records.”

Thomas stopped smiling.

Barbara leaned forward.

“That’s impossible. Walter would never have done that without telling me!”

Peter explained that Walter had owned the property separately and had executed the transfer through the appropriate legal process.

Thomas read the document twice.

Then a third time.

“Rebecca owns the house?”

“Yes,” Peter answered.

“And she’s selling it?”

“She’s entered into a purchase agreement for $795,000.”

Barbara gasped.

Thomas sank into a chair.

The home they had been preparing for Natalie wasn’t his to give her.

And their plans to borrow $300,000 against it had just collapsed.

Natalie’s Confession Changed Everything

Natalie had been sitting on the sofa, browsing furniture catalogs.

When she heard the conversation, she stood up.

“Thomas, what does he mean you don’t own the house?”

“There must be some misunderstanding,” he replied.

“You told me this place was worth almost a million dollars!”

“It is.”

“But it isn’t yours!”

Barbara tried to calm her.

“Natalie, sweetheart, think about the baby.”

Natalie’s expression changed.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she let out a bitter laugh.

“There is no baby.”

Thomas stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

“I’m not pregnant, Thomas. I never was.”

Barbara gripped the back of a chair.

“But the ultrasound picture!”

“It wasn’t mine.”

Thomas’s face went pale.

“You told me we were having a son.”

Natalie looked away.

“I told you what I thought you wanted to hear.”

The room fell silent.

But Natalie wasn’t finished.

“And my father’s Florida resort project doesn’t exist. He doesn’t own any investment properties. He’s dealing with legal trouble over financial fraud.”

Thomas slowly stood.

“Then why did you need the three hundred thousand dollars?”

“Because I have debts, Thomas. I thought you had money. You promised me a beautiful home and a fresh start.”

“You said you loved me.”

Natalie picked up her handbag.

“You wanted someone young who admired you. I wanted someone who could help me financially. Neither of us was being completely honest.”

Thomas looked devastated.

Barbara began crying.

Natalie walked toward the door.

“I’m not staying here to sort out your problems.”

And just like that, the woman they had celebrated as my replacement walked away.

The Phone Call I Had Waited Years to Hear

That afternoon, Thomas called me.

His voice sounded nothing like the confident man who had smiled at our divorce.

“Rebecca, we need to talk.”

I sat beside the window of my rental apartment.

“I’m listening.”

“Natalie lied to me. Everything was a lie.”

“I’m sorry that happened.”

He paused.

“I made a terrible mistake. We spent twenty-five years together. Doesn’t that mean something?”

I closed my eyes.

For years, I had begged him to understand how lonely I felt.

Now, suddenly, he wanted to talk about our marriage.

“Thomas, if Natalie had really been pregnant and you actually owned that house, would you be calling me today?”

He didn’t answer.
