“I should have found Emma sooner.”

The judge listened patiently.

After several moments, she announced her decision.

Emma would not be returning to her previous home.

She would remain somewhere safe while long-term arrangements were made.

Emma quietly slipped her hand into Wyatt’s.

He squeezed it gently.

Neither of them needed to speak.

The First Night of Peace

That evening, Wyatt’s home felt unusually quiet.

No arguments.

No fear.

Only the soft sound of footsteps moving through the hallway.

He sat in a chair outside Emma’s bedroom while reading an old novel.

Several minutes later, her voice drifted through the doorway.

“Mr. Wyatt?”

“I’m here.”

Wyatt smiled.

“Tomorrow, next week, next month, and every day after that.”

“You promise?”

He looked toward her room.

“I promise.”

Wyatt laughed softly.

“Then he’ll have plenty of company.”

A few days later, Emma stood on the porch and looked toward the road.

“Can you teach me how to ride a bicycle someday?”

Wyatt smiled.

“Of course I can.”

She nodded thoughtfully.

“I’ll try to be brave.”

Wyatt rested a hand gently on her shoulder.

“You’ve already been brave for a very long time.”

The Family They Chose

The months that followed were not perfect.
