“Buy Those Babies Some Formula!” My Fiancée Sneered, Tossing $20 at My Ex-Wife as She Walked Along a Lonely Tennessee Road With Two Infants Strapped to Her Chest. I Laughed, Until She Looked Me in the Eye and Asked, “You Really Don’t Know, Do You?” Hours Later, I Discovered Those Boys Were My Own Sons—and My Fiancée Had Framed Their Mother. But Then I Found a Note About a Third Baby, With One Terrifying Warning: “Make Sure He Never Finds Out What Happened to Her…”

Part 2 of 3

“Then how many babies did she have?”

He swallowed.

“Three.”

The Daughter Nobody Told Me About

I had two sons.

And a daughter.

For several moments, I couldn’t speak.

Everett explained that Hallie had discovered she was expecting triplets several weeks after our separation.

Her pregnancy had been difficult.

She had stayed in temporary housing outside Murfreesboro and worked remotely until her doctor advised her to stop.

The babies arrived early, at thirty-two weeks.

Oliver and Miles needed extra medical attention but gradually grew stronger.

Their sister wasn’t as fortunate.

“She was born with a serious heart condition,” Everett explained.

I gripped the edge of the desk.

“Is she alive?”

“As far as I know, yes.”

Relief rushed through me.

“Where is she?”

“That’s what I haven’t been able to confirm.”

I demanded to know why Hallie had never contacted me.

Everett slid two telephone records across the table.

Both showed calls from the hospital to my executive office.

Neither had been transferred.

A handwritten note beside one call read:

Personal contact from H. Prescott. Do not connect. Instruction confirmed.

“Who gave that instruction?” I asked.

Everett looked uncomfortable.

“Sabrina.”

I closed my eyes.

Hallie had tried to reach me.

She had needed help.

And someone inside my own home had made certain I never heard her voice.

But I couldn’t blame Sabrina for everything.

Hallie had begged me to listen long before those hospital calls.

I was the one who refused.

The Twenty Minutes That Changed Me

The following morning, I began searching for Hallie.

I contacted community centers, family assistance organizations, and medical offices.

Most refused to share information.

At first, I was frustrated.

Then I realized they were protecting her.

After everything she had experienced, she deserved that protection.

A woman named Judith Palmer eventually returned my call from a community center near Franklin.

“Mr. Ashford, I understand you’re trying to contact Hallie.”

“Yes. Please tell her I know about the children.”

There was a long silence.

“I’ll pass along your message.”

“Please tell her I want to apologize.”

Judith’s voice softened.

“That decision belongs to Hallie.”

Two days later, I received an address.

It was a small public park beside a river.

The message was simple.

Hallie will meet you for twenty minutes.

I arrived early.

When she approached, I noticed how much she had changed.

She looked tired, but there was a quiet confidence in the way she carried herself.

“I know Oliver and Miles are mine,” I began.

She nodded.

“I wondered how long it would take you to figure that out.”

“I also know the evidence against you was fabricated.”

Hallie looked toward the river.

“I told you that a year ago.”

“I know.”

“You called me dishonest. You wouldn’t even let me explain.”

My throat tightened.

“You’re right. I should have listened.”

She turned toward me.

“Do you understand what happened after I left?”

I shook my head.

For the next several minutes, I listened.

She told me about living in temporary housing while pregnant.

About strangers bringing groceries when she couldn’t afford them.

About the fear of delivering three babies too early.

About nights spent beside hospital equipment, wondering whether her children would be all right.

She told me Oliver loved being rocked gently.

Miles preferred sleeping with one hand resting against his brother.

And both boys smiled whenever she sang to them.

I found myself smiling through tears.

Then I asked the question I had been afraid to say aloud.

“What happened to our daughter?”

The Little Girl Named Poppy

Hallie’s expression changed.

She folded her hands in her lap.

“Her name is Poppy.”

I repeated it softly.

“Poppy Ashford.”

Hallie nodded.

“She’s beautiful, Wesley.”

I struggled to find my voice.

“Is she safe?”

“Yes.”

“Can I see her?”

Hallie looked at me carefully.

“Not yet.”

I wanted to argue.

Instead, I waited.

“You learned about her two days ago,” Hallie continued. “I’ve spent every day since she was born worrying about her. I need to know that you understand what being her father actually means.”

I lowered my head.

“I understand why you don’t trust me.”

“I’m not trying to punish you. I’m protecting our children.”

Then she explained what had happened.

Poppy had needed specialized medical treatment shortly after birth.

Her condition required careful monitoring and additional procedures.

Hallie had struggled to arrange everything.

“Someone helped us,” she said.

“Who?”

She hesitated.

“Your grandmother.”

I looked up sharply.

My grandmother, Florence Ashford, had passed away eight months earlier.

“Grandma Florence knew about the babies?”

“She found me when I was six months pregnant.”

I stared at her.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

Hallie’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She tried, Wesley.”

The Grandmother Who Never Stopped Believing

I remembered my grandmother’s final months.

She had called several times, asking me to visit.

I had been busy arranging business deals and preparing for my engagement celebration.

I postponed our meetings.

Eventually, I sent flowers instead.

Three weeks later, she was gone.

I had never known what she wanted to discuss.

Now I understood.

“Florence never believed I took that necklace,” Hallie explained. “She knew something was wrong from the beginning.”

My grandmother had quietly investigated the accusations.

She discovered inconsistencies in the documents and learned that Bernard had been involved.

But instead of confronting everyone immediately, she focused on finding Hallie.

When she learned about the pregnancy, she arranged medical appointments, financial support, and a safe place for Hallie to recover.
