Part 2 of 3

Mara hesitated.

Then she turned another page toward me.

Corporate debts.

Renovations.

A down payment on a vacation property used by Grant’s mother.

And nearly $90,000 connected to the oceanfront estate where Grant was about to marry Mallory.

I stared at Mara.

“My money is paying for his wedding?”

“Part of it appears to be.”

That was when everything changed.

I Didn’t Call Grant

Grant expected anger.

He received silence.

For the next five weeks, I learned how to be Wren’s mother while Mara and a forensic accounting team reconstructed the transactions.

At three in the morning, I fed my daughter.

At six, I reviewed financial reports.

During her naps, I signed affidavits.

We asked the court to restrict movement from the disputed accounts while the review continued.

I never called Grant.

Never called Mallory.

Never contacted his mother.

I did not post anything online.

Grant had spent years convincing himself that silence meant weakness.

I decided there was no reason to correct him early.

Then, three days before the wedding, Mara called.

“The restrictions were approved.”

“All of them?”

“Every account connected to the disputed transfers.”

I looked at Wren sleeping beside me.

Then I opened Grant’s wedding invitation.

And clicked Accept.

The Wedding

The wedding took place on a bright Saturday afternoon at a coastal estate outside Santa Barbara.

Grant had built an entire spectacle around his new life.

White flowers lined the lawn.

Champagne moved through the crowd.

Executives, investors and old family friends filled the terrace.

Mallory looked beautiful in an ivory gown, one hand frequently resting over her growing belly.

Grant looked exactly as I remembered him when he believed a room belonged to him.

Confident.

Polished.

Untouchable.

I wore a simple sapphire-blue dress and my grandmother’s pearl earrings.

Under my arm was a slim cream folder.

Grant’s mother, Vivian Mercer, spotted me first.

Her smile disappeared.

“I honestly didn’t think you’d come.”

“Grant invited me.”

She lowered her voice.

“Then show some dignity. Congratulate them, enjoy dinner and leave quietly.”

I smiled.

“I plan to leave quietly.”

She did not understand what I meant.

Not yet.

The Son Who Would Carry His Name

Grant approached me shortly before dinner with Mallory beside him.

His eyes immediately moved to the folder.

“What’s that?”

“Paperwork.”

Mallory looked uncomfortable.

Grant, however, smiled.

“You heard we’re having a boy, right?”

I nodded.

He slipped an arm around Mallory.

“My mother is thrilled. The Mercer name finally gets another heir.”

For one second, I thought about Wren.

His daughter.

The child he did not know existed.

The little girl whose father had just celebrated finally becoming a father.

But I remained silent.

Because I had not come to fight.

I had come to let Grant speak.

And eventually, he did exactly what I knew he would do.

Grant Handed Me the Microphone

During dinner, Grant stood on the terrace and raised a glass.

He thanked his parents.

He thanked Mallory.

He talked about honesty, second chances and building the family he had always dreamed of.

Then his eyes found me.

His smile changed.

“And I want to thank someone from my past for being mature enough to join us today.”

Several guests turned toward me.

Grant continued.

“Sometimes we spend years trying to make the wrong relationship work. Real courage is knowing when to admit that something simply wasn’t meant to be.”

A few people shifted uncomfortably.

Grant smiled at me.

Then, unbelievably, he held out the microphone.

“Anything you’d like to say, Claire?”

That was his mistake.

I walked forward.

Took the microphone.

And opened my folder.

Two Things Grant Didn’t Know

“Actually, yes. Just two things.”

The terrace became quiet.

I removed a photograph.

“First, Grant spent years believing our marriage couldn’t produce a child.”

I handed him the photograph.

It showed Wren sleeping against my shoulder three days after she was born.
