Happy Soul Moral Stories

Five Years After My Billionaire Ex-Husband Accused Me of Betraying Him and Refused to Hear What I Was Trying to Tell Him, He Chose the Seat Beside Me on a First-Class Flight and Mocked the Life I Must Have Had Without Him—But When We Landed in Chicago, Three Little Girls Ran Straight Into My Arms, and the Oldest Looked at Him and Asked Me One Question He Wasn’t Prepared to Hear

Part 3 of 3

His eyes lifted.

“This Sunday?”

“Yes.”

“All three?”

“They’re triplets, Julian. I’m not introducing them in shifts.”

For the first time that morning, he gave a small, nervous laugh.

Then his expression changed.

“Thank you.”

I stood.

“Don’t thank me yet.”

Grace Asked the Question I Couldn’t Answer for Him

Julian arrived at the conservatory twelve minutes early.

I noticed because I had arrived fifteen minutes early.

He was standing near the entrance in jeans and a navy jacket, holding nothing.

No flowers.

No gift bags.

No assistant.

The girls stayed close to me at first.

Maya was curious. Hope was excited because she liked the idea of having a father. Grace had been quiet all morning.

Julian crouched when they approached.

“Hi.”

Maya spoke first.

“Hi.”

“I’m Julian.”

Grace frowned.

“We know.”

He nodded.

“Right.”

Hope moved closer.

“Mom says you’re our dad.”

Julian looked at me before answering.

“Yes.”

“Do you have a dog?”

He blinked.

“No.”

Hope looked disappointed.

“You should get one.”

That broke some of the tension.

We walked through the greenhouse together.

For twenty minutes, the girls treated him like a strange adult they were trying to categorize. They asked where he lived, whether he could cook, whether he liked pancakes and why his shoes were so shiny.

Then Grace stopped beside a bed of tropical plants.

She had been holding my hand.

She let go.

“Where were you?”

Julian stopped walking.

Maya looked at her sister.

Hope picked at the edge of her sleeve.

Grace repeated herself.

“Where were you when we were babies?”

Julian looked at me.

I didn’t help him.

This was his question.

He crouched until he was level with her.

“I made a very big mistake before you were born.”

Grace watched him.

“What mistake?”

He swallowed.

“Your mom tried to tell me something important, and I was angry. I thought I already knew what was happening, so I didn’t listen.”

“For five years?”

He looked down briefly.

“For five years.”

Grace considered that.

“That’s a long time.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you find us?”

Julian’s voice was quieter when he answered.

“Because I didn’t know enough to understand that I needed to look. And because I was too sure I was right.”

Grace glanced at me.

Then back at him.

“So you got lost?”

Julian breathed out.

“Yeah.”

He nodded.

“I guess I got very lost.”

Grace didn’t hug him.

She simply took Maya’s hand and started walking again.

Julian stood slowly.

He looked at me.

I didn’t say anything.

There wasn’t anything I needed to say.

Hope Gave Him Something He Couldn’t Buy

We reached the end of our hour near the conservatory entrance.

Julian had followed every rule.

He hadn’t tried to touch the girls unless they reached for him first. He hadn’t asked for photographs. He hadn’t mentioned lawyers, custody or money.

When my phone alarm went off, he looked at it.

“That’s the hour?”

“Yes.”

Maya frowned.

“Can he come next Sunday?”

I looked at Julian.

He didn’t answer for me.

That mattered.

“We’ll see,” I said.

Grace was studying a small flower she had picked up from the ground outside. Hope had found a dandelion near the walkway and was carefully holding it by the stem.

Julian put his hands in his pockets.

“Thank you for today.”

“You already said that.”

“I know.”

The girls started toward Claire’s car.

Then Hope turned around.

“Julian!”

He stopped.

She ran back and held out the dandelion.

“Here.”

He bent down.

“For me?”

“Yes.”

He took it carefully between two fingers.

“Why?”

Hope shrugged.

“So you don’t feel lost.”

Julian didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at the little yellow flower in his hand.

Then he looked at her.

“I’ll keep it.”

Hope smiled and ran back to us.

Julian stayed where he was.

One Hour Every Sunday

I didn’t forgive Julian that afternoon.

We didn’t get back together.

There was no dramatic reunion in the parking lot, and I didn’t decide that five years could be repaired because one meeting had gone well.

Five years is five years.

He missed first words, first steps, fevers, birthdays, preschool drop-offs and the six-month period when Grace refused to sleep unless someone checked under her bed twice.

He missed Maya learning to read.

He missed Hope cutting her own hair.

He missed hundreds of ordinary mornings.

I couldn’t give those back to him.

But I could decide what happened next.

Before we left, Julian walked over to me while the girls waited with Claire.

The dandelion was still in his hand.

“What happens now?”

“Next Sunday. Same time.”

He nodded.

“An hour?”

“An hour.”

“And after that?”

“We see how they feel.”

“What about how you feel?”

I looked at him.

“This isn’t about getting me back.”

He was quiet.

Then he nodded.

“Okay.”

“If you turn this into a custody battle because you get impatient, we’re done trying to do this cooperatively.”

“I won’t.”

“If you use money to impress them, I’ll stop the visit.”

“Understood.”

“If you make promises, keep them.”

He looked toward the girls.

“I will.”

I picked up my bag.

Julian spoke again before I walked away.

“Evelyn.”

I turned.

“I should have opened the envelope.”

I looked at him for a few seconds.

“Yes.”

That was all I gave him.

The girls called for me from the car, and I walked toward them.

When I glanced back, Julian was still standing near the conservatory doors with Hope’s dandelion held carefully between his fingers.

Five years earlier, he had pushed three ultrasound pictures away without looking at them.

This time, he held on to the smallest thing his daughter gave him.
