For Three Years, I Thought My Wife Had Left Me for Another Man—Then I Found Her Holding a Little Boy With My Eyes

Part 2 of 3

My hands began trembling.

“What’s his name?”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Callum.”

She paused.

“His name is Callum Langley.”

The Story She Had Been Told

Marissa sat with me beneath a shaded pergola at the far end of the property.

Callum remained beside her.

Then she told me what had happened.

Shortly after I left for Singapore, Marissa discovered she was expecting a baby.

She wanted to surprise me in person.

Before she could, Lorraine arrived at our house.

According to Marissa, my mother told her there had been a serious incident overseas and that I would never return home.

Marissa refused to believe it.

So Lorraine returned with documents.

Official-looking documents.

A certificate.

Personal belongings supposedly sent back from overseas.

Even a small memorial container.

“She told me you were gone, Everett.”

I shook my head.

“That never happened.”

“I know that now.”

Her voice cracked.

“But I didn’t know then.”

She had written letters to me for months.

Every one came back unopened.

She tried reaching my company but was told I was unavailable.

Eventually, pregnant and emotionally exhausted, she left Newport Beach and moved north to stay with an old college friend.

I stared at her.

“I wrote to you too.”

Marissa looked confused.

“I never received anything.”

That was when the truth began taking shape.

Someone had not merely lied once.

Someone had built an entire wall between us.

The Letters We Never Received

That evening, Marissa brought me to the small guesthouse where she and Callum were staying.

She opened an old wooden cabinet and removed a box.

Inside were dozens of envelopes.

My name was written across every one in her handwriting.

RETURN TO SENDER.

UNDELIVERABLE.

ADDRESS INVALID.

I picked up one dated nearly three years earlier.

My hands shook.

“You wrote all of these?”

“Every week at first.”

She looked toward Callum, who was playing quietly nearby.

“Then every month. Eventually I stopped because I thought I was writing to someone who could never read them.”

I sat down.

I had spent three years believing she had abandoned me.

She had spent three years believing she had lost me forever.

And our son had spent his entire life without knowing I existed.

Callum suddenly walked toward me.

He touched my tie.

“Why do you look like me?”

I swallowed hard.

Marissa covered her mouth.

I crouched until we were eye level.

“Maybe because we belong to the same family.”

He looked at Marissa.

“Mommy?”

She knelt beside him.

Her voice was gentle.

“Callum, this is your dad.”

He stared at me.

I had imagined becoming a father many times when Marissa and I were married.

I had imagined a hospital room, tiny blankets, sleepless nights, first steps and birthday candles.

I had never imagined meeting my son when he was already old enough to ask who I was.

The One Person Who Knew Everything

There was only one person who could explain how this had happened.

Lorraine.

I called her that evening.

“Mother, I need you at the house tomorrow at seven.”

She immediately sensed something unusual.

“Is everything all right?”

I looked at Marissa.

“No.”

There was a pause.

“What happened?”

“Come tomorrow.”

I ended the call.

Marissa stared at me.

“What are you going to tell her?”

I looked through the window toward the ocean.

“Nothing.”

She frowned.

“Nothing?”

“I want her to see you before she has time to prepare an explanation.”

For the first time that day, Marissa almost smiled.

“You always hated confrontation.”

“Three years can change someone.”

She looked down at Callum.

“Apparently.”

Seven O’Clock

The following evening, Lorraine arrived at my Newport Beach home exactly on time.

She entered wearing a cream suit, carrying her handbag as though this were another ordinary family dinner.

“Everett, you sounded strange on the phone.”

I stood near the living room windows.
