I nodded.

“Okay.”

Derek looked relieved.

Constance sounded pleased.

“Good. I knew you’d be reasonable.”

I ended the call.

Derek smiled faintly.

“Thank you.”

I looked directly at him.

“I’m not going.”

His smile disappeared.

“Then why did you say okay?”

“Because I wasn’t answering your mother.”

He stared at me.

“I was answering myself.”

At 8:15 the Next Morning

Derek’s phone started ringing shortly after eight.

He ignored the first call.

Then came another.

And another.

Finally, he answered.

“Mom?”

I could hear Constance from several feet away.

“There are men at the event hall taking everything!”

Derek stood immediately.

“Taking what?”

“The lighting rigs, the refrigeration equipment, half the furniture. They have paperwork!”

He turned toward me.

My mother calmly placed a cup of coffee on the table.

Constance continued shouting through the phone.

“They say the lease has been terminated. Fix this!”

Derek looked confused.

Then frightened.

“Mallory, do you know anything about this?”

I adjusted Hazel in my arms.

“Yes.”

His face changed.

“What did you do?”

“I informed the leasing company that I never agreed to guarantee your mother’s contract. They reviewed the application and froze the agreement while they investigated.”

“You called them?”

“Months ago.”

He stared at me as if he no longer recognized the woman sitting in front of him.

Perhaps he didn’t.

The Mallory he knew would have cried first.

She would have asked why.

She would have listened to explanations.

She would have accepted apologies before anyone offered accountability.

That woman had disappeared quietly.

My Mother Put the Folder on the Table

Judith walked to the dining table and returned carrying a gray folder.

She placed it in front of Derek.

“You should probably read this before you call your mother back.”

He looked at her, then at me.

“What is it?”

“Open it,” I said.

Inside were bank statements showing every transfer from our savings account.

Copies of the equipment application.

Email records.

And several messages retrieved from a tablet Derek had once connected to our shared family account.

One conversation was between Derek and Constance.

She had written:

We need Mallory’s income on the application or they won’t approve the package.

Derek had answered:

She won’t agree if we ask her now. Submit it and I’ll deal with her afterward.

For almost a minute, Derek said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“Mallory, I can explain.”

“I already understand.”

“You don’t.”

“You knew I hadn’t approved it.”

He leaned forward.

“My mother thought the business would recover. Nobody was trying to leave you with anything.”

“That isn’t the point.”

“Then what is?”

I looked at him for a long moment.

“You decided that my right to say no was inconvenient, so you removed it.”

The Last Document

Derek flipped through the remaining papers.

Then he reached the final envelope.

He stopped.

“What’s this?”

“Something I hoped I would never need.”

He opened it.

Inside was a petition for separation prepared by Graham.

Derek looked up so quickly that his chair scraped against the floor.

“You’re leaving me?”

My voice remained steady.

“I left this marriage emotionally the day I found your message.”

“We just had a baby.”

I looked down at Hazel.

“Exactly.”

He stood.

“You can’t decide all of this while you’re exhausted.”

My mother stepped forward, but I gently raised my hand.

I wanted to answer him myself.

“Derek, I didn’t decide this four days after giving birth. I started making this decision seven months ago when I discovered our savings were disappearing. I became certain when I learned my information had been used without my permission.”

His eyes filled with panic.

“I was trying to help my mother.”

“And who were you helping when you lied to me?”

He had no answer.

Constance Came to the House

Around noon, a dark SUV stopped outside my mother’s home.

Constance walked quickly to the front door.

My mother opened it only halfway.

“Where is she?” Constance demanded.
