Her Husband Came Home After Three Years With a Younger Woman and Twin Boys, Then Bluntly Demanded a Divorce and Half the House. She Didn’t Argue. She Simply Said, “Okay.” He Thought She Had Accepted Losing Everything—Until a Meeting About His Own Research Forced Him to Discover Who the Wife He Had Underestimated for Years Really Was

Part 2 of 3

I expected painful discoveries.

I did not expect what I found.

There were transfers connected to Zurich.

Private-school and childcare payments.

Luxury purchases.

Travel charges I had never seen.

Regular transfers to a consulting company registered under Sabrina’s name.

I stared at the screen until nearly two in the morning.

Then I called Grant.

“I need you to review every dollar Northstar has sent to Nolan’s research program.”

There was a pause.

“How far back?”

“All of it.”

The next morning, Nolan arrived at our house with Sabrina, two suitcases, and a folder prepared by an attorney.

He sat across from me at the dining table and calmly explained what he wanted.

Half the value of the house.

A portion of certain retirement accounts.

Temporary financial support while he rebuilt his professional life in the United States.

I listened.

When he finished, I asked one question.

“Anything else?”

Nolan leaned back.

“I’m trying to be reasonable.”

Sabrina stood near the window, slowly studying the room as though she were already imagining where her furniture would go.

I closed the folder.

“Then let the attorneys handle it.”

What the Accountant Found

Two days later, my accountant called.

Nolan had withdrawn more than $200,000 through financial accounts and credit connected to our household.

The money had helped support an apartment in Switzerland, trips, childcare, clothing, jewelry, and regular payments I had never authorized knowingly.

But Grant had discovered something even more serious inside the research funding.

Invoices did not match equipment records.

Certain vendors appeared to exist only on paper.

Conference expenses had been duplicated.

And one consulting company kept appearing.

Sabrina’s.

The questionable transactions totaled hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I did not confront Nolan.

I documented everything.

That had always been the difference between us.

Nolan believed confidence could carry him through almost anything.

I believed paperwork eventually told the truth.

A few days later, he called me.

“Why are you making this divorce about money?”

I almost laughed.

“I’m not.”

“You’ve always needed to control everything.”

I looked at the stack of documents covering my desk.

“You may be right about one thing.”

“What?”

“I do like having things documented.”

Then I gave him an address in downtown Seattle.

“Come to Northstar Friday morning.”

Silence.

“Why would I meet you at Northstar?”

“Come, and you’ll understand.”

The Meeting Nolan Never Expected

Nolan arrived Friday with Sabrina.

He walked into the glass conference room and stopped.

I was sitting at the head of the table.

Grant sat to my right.

Beside him were two attorneys and a forensic accounting specialist.

Nolan looked around.

“Why is my wife here?”

Grant pushed a corporate disclosure document across the table.

“Laurel isn’t here as your wife.”

Nolan picked up the document.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he read it again.

“What is this?”

I folded my hands.

“Northstar Biomedical Partners was founded by Grant and me.”

He stared at me.

I continued.

“I remain the controlling shareholder.”

Sabrina slowly turned toward him.

Nolan looked as though someone had removed the floor beneath his feet.

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

“You’re an attorney.”

“I am.”

“You draft patent agreements.”

“Among other things.”

Grant opened another file.

“Northstar was also one of the major private investors supporting your European research program.”
