“Grant, they’re quadruplets.”

I looked through the glass at four small boys sitting together on my rug.

Then I asked the question that had been tearing through my mind.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Her expression changed.

“I did.”

We Had Been Given Two Different Versions of the Same Goodbye

Claire told me she discovered she was expecting children shortly before I left for a business trip to Seattle.

She had told me late one night.

I apparently held her hand and promised that whatever happened, we would face it together when I returned.

I remembered pieces of that conversation, but not enough.

The morning after I left, Claire visited my parents because she was frightened and needed advice.

My mother, Vivian Holloway, received her alone.

“She told me you had reconsidered everything,” Claire said.

“Reconsidered what?”

“Us. The babies. All of it.”

My mother then offered Claire money to leave Philadelphia and begin again somewhere else.

Claire refused.

Soon afterward, her calls to me stopped going through.

Then she received an email from my corporate account saying our relationship was finished and that all future communication should go through family counsel.

“I never sent that email.”

Claire nodded slowly.

“I know that now.”

Then I told her what happened when I returned.

Her apartment was empty.

My mother gave me a letter supposedly written by Claire.

It said she had realized we came from different worlds and that she did not want me searching for her.

Claire stared at me.

“Grant, I never wrote that.”

Six years.

She believed I had rejected her and our children.

I believed she had walked away from me.

Someone had carefully constructed two different stories.

One Question Changed Everything Again

Later that night, Owen found me sitting beside the fireplace.

He climbed onto the chair across from me.

“Mom says you knew her before we were born.”

“I did.”

“Were you friends?”

I glanced toward the kitchen.

Claire was listening.

“We were very important to each other.”

Owen thought quietly.

Then he asked:

“Are you our dad?”

No board meeting had ever frightened me as much as that question.

I moved closer.

“I think I may be.”

“Mom says you are.”

“I believe your mom. But there’s a simple test that can make everything certain. I think you boys deserve to know for sure.”

He looked concerned.

“Will it hurt?”

“No. Just a quick cheek swab.”

He considered that.

Then he held out his hand like a businessman closing a deal.

“Okay. We should do it.”

I shook his tiny hand.

Behind him, Claire quietly turned away.

The Message Sent From My Own Account

The following morning, a laboratory collected samples.

While Claire took the boys to a bookstore, my assistant called.

“Grant, I found something.”

“What?”

“The email Claire received six years ago.”

I stood immediately.

“Where did it come from?”

“Your corporate account.”

“I wasn’t in Philadelphia.”

“Exactly. Your regular account activity shows you were traveling, but that particular message originated from a desktop inside your father’s home office.”

Attached to the email was a financial agreement offering Claire the same amount of money my mother had mentioned.

At the bottom was the name of an attorney who had retired years before the document was supposedly prepared.

Someone had wanted the paperwork to look official without leaving an easy person to question.

My Father Had Known More Than He Ever Admitted

My father, Richard Holloway, arrived that afternoon.

I placed the document in front of him.

He looked at it and closed his eyes.

“You’ve seen this before.”

“Yes.”

“Did you create it?”

“No.”

“Did Mom?”

He hesitated.

“Your mother offered Claire money. That was wrong, and I won’t defend it. But she didn’t create that document.”

Then he admitted something that hurt even more.

He had known Claire was expecting my children.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“For six years?”

He lowered his head.

“Yes.”

At the time, Holloway Urban Partners was facing a major financial crisis. Madeline’s family was considering an investment that could stabilize the company.

My mother believed Claire and the pregnancy could complicate everything.

She tried to push Claire away.

My father discovered what had happened but stayed silent because the company was finally recovering.

“I told myself she had taken the money and left,” he said.

“She didn’t take it.”

“I know that now.”

I stared at him.

“You never checked?”

He had no good answer.

Then he mentioned something else.

During my trip six years earlier, I had experienced a short period of unusual confusion after taking medication I did not normally use.

The hotel had investigated the incident but never determined exactly how it happened.

The room connected to that incident had originally been booked by someone else.

My cousin.

Spencer Holloway.

The Man Who Had Comforted Me After Claire Disappeared

Spencer was not simply my cousin.

He had been my closest friend since childhood.

After Claire disappeared, Spencer was the person who stayed beside me.

He brought food when I stopped going out.

He encouraged me to move forward.

Years later, he became a senior executive inside our company.

When Claire heard his name, she became very quiet.

“You know something.”

She opened her wallet and removed an old photograph.

It showed Claire, Spencer, and me during a summer weekend years earlier.

On the back, Claire had written:
