“How Quickly Can This Become Official?” My Husband Asked While I Lay Unconscious After Delivering Our Triplets—He Thought Signing the Divorce Would Finally Set Him Free, Until My Grandfather’s Attorney Opened a 19-Year-Old Trust Document and Revealed What His Signature Had Just Triggered

Part 2 of 3

I knew that name.

Corinne Sutton.

Grant’s former girlfriend.

The woman he had dated before meeting me.

She had remained strangely present throughout our marriage—at charity events, company dinners, investor weekends.

Whenever I asked Grant about her, he always gave the same answer.

“Corinne’s family does business with us. That’s all.”

Apparently, it wasn’t all.

“Why would her name be anywhere near my son’s records?”

Graham became very quiet.

Then he said:

“There’s something else your grandfather wanted you to know if this day ever came.”

The Woman Grant Said I Never Needed to Worry About

I was finally allowed to see my sons later that evening.

A nurse wheeled me into the neonatal unit.

The moment I saw them, everything else disappeared.

Three tiny faces.

Three little bodies wrapped carefully beneath warm blankets.

Three lives I had spent months dreaming about.

I started crying before I could stop myself.

“Hi, boys. Mommy’s here.”

One of them moved his tiny hand.

That was enough to break my heart in the best possible way.

Then I heard a woman’s voice behind me.

“They really are beautiful.”

I turned.

Corinne Sutton stood several feet away near the entrance.

She wore a cream coat over an expensive dress, her blonde hair perfectly styled as if she were arriving at a business lunch rather than a hospital.

Graham immediately stepped between us.

“Ms. Sutton, this is a restricted area.”

Corinne ignored him.

She looked at my middle son.

Not the first baby.

Not the third.

The middle one.

“So that’s him.”

I felt cold.

“That’s who?”

Her expression changed slightly.

“The child everyone has been waiting for.”

Graham’s voice became firm.

“You need to leave.”

I looked at him.

“No. I want to know what she means.”

Corinne gave me a small smile.

“You still don’t know, do you?”

Before she could continue, Grant appeared in the hallway.

He looked exhausted.

His tie was missing, and for once his perfect confidence was gone.

“Lauren.”

I couldn’t believe he had the nerve to say my name as if we had simply missed each other at dinner.

“You divorced me while I was unconscious.”

His eyes dropped.

“I know how it looks.”

I almost laughed.

“How it looks?”

He stepped closer, stopping when hospital staff signaled that he needed to remain outside the restricted area.

“Things are more complicated than you understand.”

I pointed toward my sons.

“Then make them simple. Why was someone trying to put her family name into my baby’s records?”

Grant looked at Corinne.

And in that instant, I knew.

He was afraid of her.

The Marriage Had Started With A Deal

Back in my room, Graham gave me an envelope.

The handwriting on the front belonged to my grandfather.

It simply said:

Lauren.

Inside was a letter he had written years earlier.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

My grandfather warned me that the Sutton family had once been involved in a failed business agreement with the Ellisons. They believed they had been unfairly excluded from assets that later became extremely valuable.

Most importantly, the letter told me to be careful if anyone connected to the Sutton family became unusually interested in my marriage, my inheritance, or my future children.

I looked at Grant.

“Tell me the truth.”

He sat across the room, staring at the floor.

“I met you because of Corinne.”

The sentence felt like someone had removed the air from the room.

“What?”

“Her family knew your grandfather still controlled assets they couldn’t reach. They thought marrying into the Ellison family might eventually create another path.”

I stared at the man I had loved for eight years.

“So meeting me wasn’t an accident?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

My throat tightened.

“Our first date?”

He said nothing.

“The charity auction?”

Silence.

“You telling me you didn’t care about my family name?”

Grant finally looked at me.

“That part was planned.”

I closed my eyes.

There are betrayals that make you angry.

Others make you question your own memories.

Suddenly, our entire marriage seemed different.

Every romantic coincidence.

Every perfectly timed conversation.

Every question Grant had casually asked about my grandfather.

“Did you ever love me?”

Grant’s face changed.

“Yes. That wasn’t supposed to happen, but yes.”

I looked toward the photographs of our sons beside my bed.

“And yet when I couldn’t speak for myself, you left.”

He had no answer.

Grant Finally Learned What His Signature Had Done

The following morning, Graham requested a formal meeting with Grant and his legal team.

I joined remotely from my hospital room.

Grant appeared on the screen beside Mitchell Rowe and two corporate attorneys.

Graham placed several documents on the table.

“Yesterday morning, Mr. Waverly voluntarily executed marital separation documents while Lauren Ellison was medically incapacitated.”

Grant leaned back.

“We know what I signed.”

Graham nodded.

“I’m not sure you do.”

He opened the Ellison Family Preservation Trust.

Then he explained the clause.

I watched Grant’s face lose color.

His attorney immediately reached for the document.
