Part 2 of 3

Caleb stared.

“You mailed this?”

“Eleven days after I found out I was pregnant.”

“Why didn’t you call?”

“I did.”

Caleb remembered changing his personal number after Meridian Ridge experienced a security problem involving several executives.

He had given the new number to family members, colleagues, and a few close friends.

But not Audrey.

Their breakup had been painful, and Caleb had convinced himself that completely separating their lives was the cleanest solution.

“I emailed you,” Audrey continued.

She named the account.

Caleb felt his stomach drop.

He hadn’t checked that personal email address in years.

It contained too many pieces of their old life together.

Photographs.

Travel reservations.

Apartment applications.

Furniture receipts.

Messages about wedding venues they had once considered.

After their separation, Caleb simply stopped opening it.

Audrey reached into her bag again.

Another envelope appeared.

Then another.

“I tried your office too.”

Caleb looked at her.

“My office?”

“Yes.”

She Had Walked Into His Headquarters

During her pregnancy, Audrey had eventually gone to Meridian Ridge’s headquarters herself.

Caleb had been in Singapore negotiating an international partnership.

Audrey had waited in reception and asked to leave a sealed letter for him.

“You used my name?”

“Of course.”

“You told them it was personal?”

“I told the receptionist it was extremely important and had to reach you directly.”

Caleb rubbed his forehead.

Meridian Ridge had grown too quickly.

In less than five years, a small startup had become a corporation with thousands of employees.

Caleb had changed executive assistants several times. The company had moved buildings. Security procedures had changed. Internal mail had been reorganized.

But there was something else he didn’t want to admit.

He had created an environment where anything unrelated to business could be pushed aside.

He remembered telling his executive staff before one overseas trip that only acquisition matters, board emergencies, legal issues, or serious family situations should interrupt him.

Everything else could wait.

At the time, he had called that discipline.

Now it sounded very different.

“Why did you stop trying?”

Audrey looked toward the dark window.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she answered.

“Because of the last thing you said to me.”

Caleb already knew the sentence.

The Words He Could Never Take Back

Their final argument had begun over Caleb’s decision to spend several months overseas.

Audrey hadn’t demanded that he abandon his company.

She had asked whether there was still room for a marriage and family in the life he was building.

Caleb had been exhausted, ambitious, and defensive.

He had heard criticism where Audrey had actually been asking for reassurance.

Eventually, he had walked toward the door and said something crueler than he intended.

“If we’re finished, then we’re finished. Don’t come searching for me every time your life becomes difficult.”

Now those words returned with terrible clarity.

Caleb looked down.

“I really said that.”

“Yes.”

“And when you couldn’t reach me…”

Audrey nodded.

“I thought you had made sure I couldn’t.”

Caleb looked at Theo, who was now coloring a snowman bright green.

“I didn’t know.”

Audrey studied him.

Then her expression softened slightly.

“I believe you.”

Caleb looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because I’ve known you long enough to know what your face looks like when you’re pretending.”

Theo glanced up.

“Pretending what?”

Audrey smiled.

“Adult things.”

Theo frowned seriously.

“Adults say that when they don’t want kids to hear stuff.”

Caleb laughed before he could stop himself.

Audrey laughed too.

For a few seconds, they sounded like the two people who had once shared a tiny kitchen and believed they could build anything together.

Being a Father Wasn’t Something He Could Claim

As the plane began descending toward Minneapolis, Theo handed Caleb the blue crayon.

“Do you have kids?”

Caleb froze.

Audrey gave him a subtle look.

Not yet.

He understood immediately.

Biology could establish a connection.

It couldn’t create three years of trust in a single flight.

Caleb could not simply walk into Theo and Lucy’s lives and demand to be called Dad.

He would have to earn a place there.

“That’s kind of a complicated question,” Caleb said.

Theo considered the answer.

Then he pointed toward Lucy.

“I have her.”

Lucy immediately hugged her elephant.

“My Ellie.”

Theo sighed.

“She never shares.”

Caleb smiled.

“Sounds difficult.”

“Very.”

But Caleb’s smile faded as he looked at them.

For years, he had defined success by how much responsibility he could carry.

How many employees depended on him.

How many investors called him first.

How many deals required his approval.

Tonight he realized that while he had been becoming indispensable to thousands of strangers, two children had been growing up without knowing his name.

The First Twenty Minutes He Refused to Give Away

The moment the plane landed, Caleb’s phone exploded with notifications.

His chief operating officer, Serena Pike, called.

“Caleb, the legal team is already here. We need you downtown immediately.”

Caleb watched Audrey put Lucy’s coat on while Theo struggled with one sleeve of his jacket.

“Give me twenty minutes.”

Silence.

“Twenty minutes?”

“Yes.”

“Caleb, we’re talking about nearly seven hundred million dollars.”

He watched Lucy reach for Audrey.

Then he answered quietly.

“I’m aware.”

“What could possibly be more important right now?”

Caleb picked up Theo’s small backpack.

“My children.”

Serena didn’t speak for several seconds.

Then her voice softened.

“I’ll keep everyone in the room.”

At baggage claim, Audrey finally turned toward him.

“You should go.”
