Happy Soul Moral Stories

I Came Home Early From a Canceled Trucking Route and Found My Sixteen-Year-Old Son Washing His Clothes by Hand in Freezing Water While My Wife Vacationed in Miami—When I Rolled Up His Sleeves, I Discovered I Had Been Living With a Stranger and A Scheme All Along

Part 2 of 3

His hands twisted together.

“My birthday…”

His voice cracked.

“What about it?”

He stared at the carpet.

“She used my birthday money to buy Wyatt a bike.”

I felt something tighten in my chest.

“She told everyone my birthday had been canceled because I got bad grades.”

He looked toward the window.

“She made me stand outside and watch Wyatt’s party.”

I followed his eyes.

The patio was visible from there.

“The cake…”

He whispered the next words.

“It had my favorite baseball team on it.”

I didn’t understand.

Then I did.

The cake had been ordered for Lucas.

Candice had simply changed whose name went on it.

I Walked Into My Wife’s Bedroom

Lucas fell asleep before midnight.

He looked exhausted.

Not just tired.

The kind of exhaustion that comes from waiting every day for something bad to happen.

I quietly closed his bedroom door.

Then I walked into the master bedroom Candice and I shared.

Nothing looked unusual.

The bed was made.

Her perfume still lingered near the dresser.

Vacation brochures sat on the nightstand.

I opened the first drawer.

Nothing.

The second.

Receipts.

Jewelry.

A passport holder.

Then I opened the bottom drawer.

Tucked beneath several sweaters sat a small velvet pouch.

I knew it before I even opened it.

The silver coaster.

Clara had bought it the week Lucas was born.

She always said it belonged to him one day because it was the first thing they purchased as a family after bringing him home from the hospital.

Lucas had searched for it after Clara died.

We both thought it had disappeared during the move.

It hadn’t disappeared.

Someone had taken it.

I turned it over in my hands.

Scratched into the underside were Clara’s initials.

Exactly where I remembered them.

As I reached to put it back, I noticed a thick folder underneath the drawer liner.

I pulled it free.

The first page listed names.

Addresses.

Ages.

Short notes beside each.

Owns house.

No children nearby.

Large retirement account.

My pulse slowed instead of racing.

Years on the road had taught me something.

When something looked impossible…

…keep turning the page.

Near the middle of the folder, I found my own name.

Gabriel Lawson.

Underneath it were four words.

Long-haul. Away frequently.

I stared at the page for several seconds.

Then I took out my phone.

One photograph.

Then another.

Then every single page.

When I finished, I slipped the folder back exactly where I had found it.

I wasn’t guessing anymore.

Tomorrow morning, Lucas and I were leaving this house.

And before Candice’s vacation was over, I intended to learn exactly who I had married.

The Phone Hidden Inside a Winter Coat

The next morning, I canceled my next trucking route.

My dispatcher wasn’t happy.

“You’ve never canceled a run before.”

“Family emergency.”

That was all I said.

When I hung up, Lucas was already cleaning the kitchen.

Nobody had asked him to.

He simply assumed he was supposed to.

“Leave it.”

He looked nervous.

“If Candice comes home and sees—”

“Candice isn’t deciding anything anymore.”

He didn’t answer.

He just nodded slowly.

I asked him one question.

“Where did she hide your phone?”

His eyes moved toward the hallway closet.

Inside an old winter coat, buried beneath scarves, was a dead cell phone.

I plugged it into a charger.

Twenty minutes later it came to life.

Hundreds of unread messages appeared.

Friends asking where he had gone.

Teachers wondering why assignments suddenly stopped.

Then one video caught my attention.

Wyatt was laughing while kicking Lucas’s bicycle onto the driveway.

He bent the front wheel against the curb.

Behind the camera, Candice laughed.

“Now tell your dad you crashed it.”

Lucas never spoke during the recording.

He simply picked up the broken bike.

I looked over at him.

“Why didn’t you show me this?”

“I couldn’t.”

He rubbed his wrists.

“She said if I told you anything, you’d think I was trying to break up your marriage.”

I couldn’t even look at the screen anymore.

Instead, I called our family doctor.

By noon, Lucas had photographs of every bruise, medical notes documenting old and new injuries, and a diagnosis that hit me harder than anything else.

Mild malnutrition.

The doctor looked at me carefully.

“Has he been eating regular meals?”

I couldn’t answer.

Because I honestly didn’t know.

That realization made me feel like I had failed my son long before that morning.

The Folder Explained Everything

After leaving the clinic, I met attorney Victoria Bell.

I handed her my phone.

She quietly flipped through the photographs I’d taken from Candice’s folder.

She stopped halfway through.

“Gabriel… where did you find this?”

“In my bedroom.”

She looked up immediately.

“Don’t confront her yet.”

She pointed at one page.

There were several names.

Most belonged to elderly widows.

Beside each name were notes.

Lives alone.
