Happy Soul Moral Stories

I Came Home to Find My Husband Standing Over Our 8-Year-Old Daughter With a Belt in His Hand, Accusing Her of Turning His Lover’s $12,000 Designer Dress Into a Mess—Then He Told Me, “Pay for It or Take Her and Get Out of My House.” But When I Took My Daughter Upstairs, She Whispered, “Mom, I Didn’t Do It. I Saw What Really Happened.” Instead of Arguing, I Sent One Message to the Five Brothers I Hadn’t Spoken to in Nine Years—and My Phone Rang 17 Seconds Later

Part 2 of 3

What if Brian fought me for Sophie?

What if he made everyone believe I was unstable?

And underneath all of those questions was one I had avoided for almost nine years.

What if I called my family?

I opened an old contact.

Michael Parker.

My oldest brother.

The last time we had spoken, I was twenty-nine.

We’d had an argument about Brian.

Michael had told me Brian was isolating me.

I told Michael he was controlling.

The irony wasn’t lost on me now.

Before I left, Michael had said one thing.

“You can be angry with me for the rest of your life. But if you ever need me, call.”

I hadn’t.

Until that afternoon.

I typed one sentence.

Brian hurt Sophie.

I attached the photographs.

Then the video.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

I pressed send.

Seventeen seconds later, my phone rang.

Seventeen Seconds

I stared at Michael’s name.

Nine years.

Then seventeen seconds.

I answered.

“Megan?”

His voice sounded older.

“Yes.”

There was a pause.

“Is Sophie with you?”

“Yes.”

“Are you safe right now?”

I looked at the locked door.

“For the moment.”

“Send me your address.”

I swallowed.

“Michael—”

“Address first. Everything else later.”

So I sent it.

He asked me not to delete anything.

Then he asked whether I could leave safely.

I told him Brian kept the car keys downstairs and would notice immediately.

Michael didn’t tell me to confront him.

He didn’t tell me to be brave.

He said something much more useful.

“Stay with Sophie. David is calling you in five minutes.”

David was my second-oldest brother.

A corporate attorney.

Five minutes later, he called.

He asked about the house.

I almost laughed.

“The house?”

“Whose name is on it?”

“Brian’s. I think.”

“You think?”

“He bought it after we got married. That’s what he told me.”

David went quiet.

“Give me the address.”

I did.

Downstairs, something slammed.

Brian shouted my name.

Sophie grabbed my hand.

Then David said:

“Megan, don’t agree to leave that property tonight.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m looking at something that doesn’t make sense.”

There was typing on his end.

“What?”

Another pause.

“I need to confirm it.”

Brian hit the guest-room door with his palm.

“Open the door now.”

I stood.

For ten years, that tone had made me move.

This time I stayed where I was.

“Megan!”

I looked at Sophie.

Then at the saved video on my phone.

“No.”

The hallway went quiet.

“What did you say?”

I walked to the door but didn’t unlock it.

“I said no.”

That was the first thing I changed.

It wouldn’t be the last.

The House Brian Called His

My brothers arrived just after seven.

All five of them.

Michael first.

Then David, Eric, Kevin and Daniel.

I hadn’t seen any of them in nearly nine years.

For a second, nobody moved.

Michael had more gray in his hair.

Eric was heavier.

Daniel, my youngest brother, didn’t look young anymore.

Then Sophie stepped halfway behind me.

Michael looked at the marks on her arm.

Whatever reunion we might have had disappeared.

“Hi, Sophie.”

She stared at him.

“You’re my uncle?”

Michael nodded.

“Yeah. I’m Michael.”

“Mom said she has five brothers.”

Eric gave her a small smile.

“Unfortunately, that’s true.”

It was the first time Sophie smiled all day.

A woman came in behind them.

Her name was Karen Wallace, an investigator who worked with a local domestic-violence response unit.

Brian immediately changed.

His shoulders relaxed.

His voice lowered.

Public Brian had arrived.

“I’m not sure why this has turned into a circus.”

Michael didn’t answer.

Brian looked at me.

“You called your family?”

“Yes.”

Ashley was sitting at the kitchen island.

She had changed clothes.

The ruined blue dress was still draped over a chair.

Brian pointed toward the front door.

“Fine. Have your reunion somewhere else.”

Nobody moved.

His voice sharpened.

“This is my house.”

David opened the leather folder he’d brought with him.

“Actually, that’s something we should clear up.”

Brian laughed.

“Excuse me?”

David placed several pages on the kitchen island.

“The property is held by the Parker Family Trust.”

Brian stared at him.

Then at me.

I didn’t understand.

“What?”

David turned the page toward me.

My father’s name was on it.

So was mine.

Before he died, Dad had created a trust for me.

I’d known there was one.

I hadn’t known what remained in it.

After I cut contact with my family, I stopped receiving the statements because I’d changed addresses twice, and eventually Brian had taken over nearly all our financial paperwork.

The house had been purchased through assets connected to that trust.

Brian had been granted occupancy rights as my spouse.

He had never owned it.

David tapped the document.

“Megan is the primary beneficiary.”

Brian’s face changed.

“That’s impossible.”

“It isn’t.”

“I paid for this house.”

“You contributed toward expenses. You didn’t purchase the property.”

Brian looked at me.

“You knew?”

I shook my head.

That seemed to anger him even more.

“So now your rich family shows up and suddenly you’re going to pretend you’ve been trapped?”
