I didn’t answer.

Because I already knew whose signature appeared on every approval.

Jake’s.

Susan folded her hands.

“Emily, don’t tell him you’ve found this.”

“Why?”

“Because if he’s moving money, he’ll destroy whatever’s left.”

When I returned home, Jake was grilling steaks in the backyard.

He waved like nothing had happened.

“Perfect timing.”

I forced a smile.

“Smells good.”

He kissed my cheek.

The same lips that had promised another woman she would receive a diamond necklace that night.

Ben ran outside carrying a baseball glove.

“Mom! Dad said we’ll go camping next month!”

I looked at Jake.

He smiled confidently.

“Family trip.”

For one strange second I wondered whether he actually believed he could keep every version of his life separated forever.

The First Real Proof

Two nights later Jake fell asleep on the couch while watching television.

His business tablet rested beside him.

Normally it required facial recognition.

That night it was already unlocked.

I carried it into my home office before the screen timed out.

There were hundreds of files.

Most meant nothing.

Then I found a folder simply labeled:

Projects.

Inside were photographs of signed invoices.

Payment schedules.

Bank confirmations.

Several emails with Ashley Davis.

One message made me stop scrolling.

Move Mike onto the approvals if anyone starts asking questions.

Mike Johnson.

Our senior accountant.

A man who had worked for us for nearly fifteen years.

Another email arrived minutes later.

If everything goes wrong, accounting signed the reports first.

My hands froze above the keyboard.

Jake wasn’t just stealing.

He was already preparing someone else to take the blame.

I copied every file onto an encrypted drive.

Then I logged out exactly as I had found it.

When I returned the tablet to the coffee table, Jake never opened his eyes.

The next morning he kissed Ben goodbye, grabbed the same tablet, and left for work.

He had no idea that the evidence he planned to hide was already sitting inside a small yellow folder in my attorney’s office.

For the first time since I saw the velvet jewelry box, I wasn’t wondering whether Jake was lying anymore.

I was deciding how to make sure he couldn’t lie his way out of it.

The Yellow Envelope

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the diamond necklace.

It was the way my husband smiled.

Jake Parker leaned across the jewelry counter and nodded while the saleswoman fastened a diamond necklace inside a dark blue velvet box. He looked excited. Relaxed. Like a man buying something he had dreamed about for months.

Then he laughed when his phone lit up.

I couldn’t hear Ashley Davis, but I recognized her picture on the screen.

“You’ll love it,” Jake said softly. “Tonight.”

I stood across the mall corridor holding a bag of school supplies for our eight-year-old son, Ben.

Jake had told me he was spending the afternoon meeting with a supplier.

Instead, he was spending nearly forty thousand dollars on another woman.

I stepped behind a column before he could turn around.

The velvet box disappeared into a shopping bag with a gold ribbon.

Jake kissed his credit card before slipping it back into his wallet.

Then he walked away smiling.

I stayed where I was for almost a minute.

Not because I was crying.

Because I was trying to remember which company credit card he had just used.

By the time I reached my car, I already knew exactly what I was going to do.

I Didn’t Go Home Right Away

Ben climbed into the back seat after soccer practice.

“Where’s Dad?” he asked.

“Working late,” I answered.

He nodded without another question.

Children usually believe the parent who sounds calm.

I drove past our neighborhood without turning onto our street.

Instead, I stopped at a storage facility five miles away.

The manager helped me rent a climate-controlled unit.

That afternoon I quietly moved our passports, birth certificates, backup hard drives, a small safe, and two suitcases into the unit while Ben watched cartoons on my tablet.

He thought we were cleaning.

I let him think that.

When the last box was inside, I locked the door and slipped the key onto my key ring.

Only then did I breathe normally again.

Jake and I had built Parker Construction together.

He liked introducing himself as the founder.

He rarely mentioned that I had spent twelve years handling the books while raising Ben.

Before Ben was born, I had worked as a forensic accountant.

Following numbers had once been my entire career.

You never completely lose that habit.

For weeks, small things had bothered me.

Invoices that arrived twice.

Payments rounded to unusually clean numbers.

Projects that somehow cost more after they were supposedly finished.

Every time I asked, Jake gave the same answer.

“Accounting software glitch.”

“The auditors already looked at it.”

“You’re worrying too much.”

I wanted to believe him.

Marriage makes people ignore patterns they would never ignore in strangers.

But the diamond necklace changed everything.

That evening I logged into our shared financial dashboard.

Jake had forgotten one important detail.
