Marcus looked at a folder.

Claire smiled.

“Ethan will believe whatever I tell him. He always has.”

Marcus laughed.

“And after the estate transfer?”

Claire leaned back.

“Then we won’t have to pretend anymore.”

Ethan stopped the recording.

His hands shook.

Ethan looked at her.

“No. I’m doing this because I finally listened.”

Marcus tried to leave.

The investigators stopped him.

Claire’s expression changed.

The mask disappeared.

For a moment, Ethan saw the person underneath.

Claire and Marcus were held responsible for their financial crimes and abuse of an elderly person.

The house became quiet again.

Evelyn recovered slowly.

She started gardening again.

And every Sunday morning, Ethan, Evelyn, and Sofia shared breakfast together.

One evening, Evelyn found him sitting alone on the back porch.

The garden was quiet.

The same garden where Sofia now planted roses every weekend.

His mother sat beside him slowly.

“You know what hurts you the most, don’t you?”

Ethan looked at her.

“That I wasn’t there.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes. But not because I blame you.”

He looked away.

“You should.”

His mother gently touched his hand.

“No, Ethan. Because Claire wanted you to believe everything was fine. And she was very good at making people believe what she wanted.”

He swallowed.

“I designed security systems for entire buildings. Government facilities. Companies worth billions. And I couldn’t protect my own mother.”

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“You protected me when you finally knew the truth.”

Ethan shook his head.

“It took too long.”

For a moment, Evelyn said nothing.

Then she whispered something that stayed with him.

“A person who makes a mistake and refuses to change is dangerous. A person who makes a mistake and spends the rest of their life becoming better is still my son.”

Those words did not erase the guilt.

But they gave him permission to stop drowning in it.

The Secret Sofia Never Told Him

Several months after the trial, Sofia started preparing to leave.

She had never planned to stay permanently.

The house had been a place where she worked.
