Instead, I Found Her Washing Dishes Like a Servant While My Mother and Siblings Enjoyed a Lavish Party Paid for With My Money. My Sister Turned Pale When She Saw Me Standing Behind Her. I Ended Their Party and Took My Wife Away—But the Evidence She Had Secretly Collected for Two Years Led Us to a Letter My Late Father Had Written to Her Before We Ever Met

Part 2 of 3

I shook my head.

“I never received those letters.”

“And I barely received your messages.”

We stared at each other.

For years, I had believed our marriage was suffering because we lived on different continents.

Now I suspected someone had deliberately kept us apart.

Nora opened the bottom drawer of her dresser and removed a thick envelope.

“I’ve been saving copies of everything for two years.”

Inside were financial records, unusual invoices, altered correspondence, and documents carrying digital approvals I did not recognize.

One company appeared repeatedly.

Briarstone Property Advisors.

I remembered rejecting a business proposal from that firm several years earlier.

Yet the records showed substantial payments leaving my accounts.

“Your mother meets their representative regularly,” Nora said.

“Why?”

She looked directly at me.

“I think they’re planning something involving our first restaurant.”

The Truth Hidden in Our Accounts

That night, I took Nora to a hotel and contacted my longtime attorney, Malcolm Price.

I asked him to bring every authorization, property document, and financial agreement connected to my family.

He arrived the following morning with a troubled expression.

After reviewing Nora’s evidence, he explained that my mother had received unusually broad financial authority.

Several instructions appeared to have been issued from my email accounts.

Others carried my electronic signature.

“I never approved these,” I said.

Malcolm nodded.

“Then we need an independent examination of your business records.”

He showed me another document.

It concerned our first restaurant in downtown Charlotte.

The property was scheduled to be transferred to Briarstone in ten days.

I stared at the proposed agreement.

That restaurant was more than an investment.

It was where Nora and I had learned to work together, argued over paint colors, and celebrated our first profitable month.

“Can you stop the transfer?”

“We can challenge the authorization and request an immediate hold.”

Nora reached across the table.

“Bennett, there’s something else.”

She described a locked cabinet inside my father’s old study.

During the previous week, she had overheard Patricia and Mallory discussing documents that I was never supposed to see.

Malcolm closed his folder.

“Then we should examine those documents before anyone has another opportunity to move them.”

The Cabinet My Mother Refused to Open

We returned to the mansion that afternoon with Malcolm and two independent financial investigators.

My mother met us near the staircase.

“I thought we agreed to discuss this privately.”

“We are discussing it,” I answered. “With people who can help establish the facts.”

Mallory emerged from the study, looking uncomfortable.

Preston followed her.

Nora walked directly toward the old oak cabinet behind my father’s desk.

“Please open this,” she said.

My mother folded her arms.

“Those are private family records.”

“Then I have every reason to see them,” I replied.

After a long silence, Patricia removed a small key from her bracelet.

The cabinet contained property agreements, letters, photographs, and several envelopes tied together with string.

One envelope carried my childhood nickname in my father’s handwriting.

My father had passed away many years earlier.

I opened it carefully.

The letter described a financial dispute involving my mother’s relatives and an older property company connected to Briarstone.

My father had apparently tried to protect several pieces of land from being transferred unfairly.

One paragraph referred specifically to the building that later became my first restaurant.

Then Nora noticed another envelope.

Her name was written across the front.

The handwriting belonged to my father.

But he had passed away before Nora and I ever met.

“How could he have written to me?” she whispered.

My mother suddenly stepped forward.

“You shouldn’t open that.”

Nora looked at her.

“Why not?”

Patricia said nothing.

Nora opened the envelope.

Inside was an old photograph showing my father standing beside a young woman outside a neighborhood diner.

The woman held a small child.

Nora stared at the photograph.

“That’s my mother.”

The Childhood Nobody Had Explained

Nora had grown up moving between temporary homes after losing her mother at a young age.

She remembered very little about her early childhood.

The letter identified her mother as Caroline Mercer, a former employee of my father’s diner.

According to the documents, Caroline’s family had once owned land connected to our restaurant property.

Briarstone’s predecessors had attempted to acquire that land during a period of financial difficulty.

My father believed Caroline’s family had not been treated fairly.

He had promised to preserve the records and help locate Caroline’s daughter after the family became separated.

Nora read the letter twice.

“He knew about me before you did.”

Malcolm examined the attached documents.

“We still need to verify the ownership history, but these papers may explain why Briarstone wants the property.”

I turned to my mother.

“You knew who Nora was?”

Patricia looked away.

“I knew her mother’s name.”

“And you knew she had been placed with another family?”

My mother remained silent.

Nora stepped closer.

“Did you know where I was when I was little?”

Finally, Patricia nodded.

She explained that Nora had briefly lived with a woman named Vivian Cross, who was related to Patricia.

When Vivian became ill, Nora entered another temporary placement.

My mother had known about the situation but had never followed up.
