Behind Closed Doors Moral Stories

“I Woke Up at 3:07 A.M. on My Wedding Night and Found My Father-in-Law Holding a Red Cord Over the Bed While He Lay Between Me and My Husband. I Sat Up and Asked, ‘What Are You Doing?’—but He Calmly Said, ‘There’s Still One Part of the Family Tradition Left.’ Then I Learned My New Husband Had Known His Father Planned to Be in Our Room Before We Ever Said ‘I Do.’ I Grabbed My Phone and Went Downstairs… and One Message on His Screen Told Me This Night Had Been Planned Very Differently From What I’d Been Told.”

Part 1 of 3

My father-in-law walked into our room on my wedding night carrying a pillow, a folded blanket, and a long red cord wrapped around one hand.

For a few seconds, I honestly thought he’d walked into the wrong room.

Then he put the pillow in the middle of our bed and started pulling back the comforter.

“Frank, what are you doing?”

He glanced at me as if I’d asked why he was taking off his shoes before getting into bed.

“Daniel didn’t explain it to you?”

I looked at my husband. He was standing beside the dresser with his tie already off, staring at the floor instead of at me.

“Explain what?”

Daniel finally looked up.

“Rachel, don’t freak out. It’s just this thing my family does on the wedding night.”

“What thing?”

Frank answered for him.

“The groom’s father stays with the couple for the first night. It’s supposed to bring good luck to the marriage and help the couple have a son.”

I looked at the pillow again.

“When you say ‘stays with the couple,’ do you mean in this room?”

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck.

“Technically, in the bed. But it’s only for a few hours.”

I thought he was joking.

He wasn’t.

And when I asked how long he’d known his father planned to sleep between us on our wedding night, Daniel admitted he’d known before we got married.

He just hadn’t told me.

The Pillow in the Middle of Our Bed

We’d gotten married that afternoon at a restored farmhouse outside Asheville, North Carolina. It wasn’t an enormous wedding, but we’d spent almost a year planning it, and by eleven that night I was so tired that I could barely feel my feet.

Most of our guests had already left or returned to their hotels. Daniel and I were staying in the farmhouse’s upstairs bridal suite before leaving for Charleston the following morning.

I’d been in the bathroom removing about thirty pins from my hair when I heard our bedroom door open. I assumed Daniel had gone downstairs for something.

When I came out, Frank was standing beside our bed.

He had changed out of his suit and was wearing gray sweatpants and a white T-shirt. A blanket was hanging over his shoulder, and the red cord was looped several times around his hand.

Daniel was standing several feet away from him.

I looked from one man to the other.

“Can somebody please tell me what’s going on?”

Frank smiled.

“There’s nothing to worry about. It’s an old Harper family tradition.”

“I’ve been with Daniel for four years. How have I never heard about it?”

Frank gave a small shrug.

“It’s not exactly something that comes up over Thanksgiving dinner.”

Normally I might have laughed at that.

I didn’t.

I turned to Daniel.

“Did you know he was going to do this tonight?”

Daniel took a breath before answering.

“Yeah. Dad mentioned it a couple of weeks ago.”

I stared at him.

“A couple of weeks ago?”

“Rachel, I was going to tell you.”

“When? Tomorrow morning?”

“I didn’t know how you’d react.”

“You knew exactly how I’d react. That’s why you didn’t tell me.”

Frank sighed.

“Come on, Rachel. Nobody’s trying to upset you. It’s a family custom. You lie down, everybody gets some sleep, and by morning it’s over.”

I pointed at the pillow he’d put between ours.

“You’re talking about getting into bed between me and my husband on our wedding night. You can’t honestly expect me to act like that’s completely normal.”

“Normal is different in every family.”

“Fine, but I’m part of this family now, and nobody asked me.”

Daniel came closer.

“Can we just talk about this for a minute without everybody getting worked up?”

“I’m not worked up. I’m asking why my husband knew another person was planning to sleep in our bed tonight and decided I didn’t need to know until that person showed up with a pillow.”

He didn’t have an answer for that.

Frank picked up the pillow again.

“If you’re uncomfortable, I can stay on top of the covers. Would that make this easier?”

It didn’t make it easier.

But I was exhausted, and I was still wearing half my wedding makeup. My mother had spent the entire afternoon crying happy tears. There were flowers downstairs, wedding gifts in Daniel’s car, and plane reservations waiting for us after Charleston.

I didn’t want my wedding night to turn into a family war.

So I made what I would later realize was a terrible compromise.

“If you’re really insisting on doing this, you stay on top of the comforter. You don’t touch me, and this ends first thing in the morning.”

Frank started to object.

Daniel cut him off.

“Dad, just leave it alone. She’s already meeting you halfway.”

Frank looked irritated, but eventually he nodded.

“All right. If that’s what makes her comfortable.”

I went into the bathroom and changed into sweatpants and a long-sleeved shirt.

When I came back, Frank was lying on top of the comforter between us.

The red cord was sitting on the nightstand beside his watch.

I noticed it, but I didn’t ask about it.

I wish I had.

At 3:07 A.M., I Felt Something Move Across My Back

I barely slept.

Frank snored loudly enough that every time I started drifting off, I woke up again. Daniel stayed on his side of the mattress facing the window, and I stayed so close to the edge that one of my feet was hanging off.

At one point I considered going downstairs and sleeping on the couch.

Then I became angry at the idea.

It was my wedding night too. I wasn’t going to be the one pushed out of the room.

Eventually, sometime after two, I must have fallen asleep.

I woke because something was moving across my back.

At first I thought it was the edge of the blanket. I opened my eyes and stayed still for a moment, trying to figure out what had woken me.

Then I felt it again.

Something thin dragged lightly from near my shoulder toward the middle of my back.

I rolled over and switched on the bedside lamp.

Frank jerked his hand away.

The red cord was in it.

I sat up immediately.

“Why are you touching me with that?”

Daniel woke and pushed himself onto one elbow.

“What’s going on?”

I pointed at his father.

“He was running that cord across my back while I was asleep.”

Daniel looked at Frank.

His expression changed immediately.

“Dad, what the hell are you doing?”

Frank looked annoyed that we’d interrupted him.

“I’m finishing the blessing. Everybody needs to calm down.”

I pulled the comforter around myself.

“What blessing? You said you were sleeping here. Nobody said anything about touching me while I was asleep.”

Daniel sat all the way up.

“I didn’t know about this either. Dad, you never said anything about a cord.”

Frank looked from Daniel to me.

“Because it’s part of the same tradition. You pass it over the bride’s back three times, then you tie it underneath the bed. That’s how it’s always been done.”

“You’ve already done it more than once?”

Frank hesitated.

That was enough for me.

I got out of bed and grabbed my phone from the dresser.

Daniel followed me.

“Rachel, please wait. I swear I didn’t know he was going to do that.”

I shoved my feet into the shoes I’d worn earlier that day.

“Maybe you didn’t know about the cord, Daniel, but you knew he was coming into this room. You knew he planned to get into our bed, and you decided not to tell me.”

“I know, and I should’ve told you. I’m not saying I shouldn’t have.”

“Then what are you saying?”

“I’m saying I didn’t know it was going to turn into this.”

I looked at him.

“Neither did I. That’s exactly why you were supposed to tell me before it happened.”

I picked up my overnight bag and walked downstairs.

His Mother Took One Look at the Cord and Asked, “What Are You Talking About?”

The farmhouse kitchen was dark except for the light above the stove.

I had just started looking through my bag for my car keys when Linda came in wearing a robe.

She stopped when she saw me.

“Rachel? Honey, what’s going on? Why are you dressed?”

Before I could answer, Daniel came downstairs.

Frank followed him, still carrying the red cord.

Linda looked at her husband.

“Why are you carrying that?”

I leaned against the kitchen island.

“Apparently it’s part of your family’s wedding tradition.”

Linda frowned.

“What wedding tradition?”

Nobody spoke for a second.

I looked at Frank.

“Go ahead. Tell her what you told me.”

Frank folded the cord into his palm.

“Linda knows what I’m talking about.”

She shook her head.

“No, I really don’t.”

I explained it as simply as I could.

“Frank told me the groom’s father is supposed to sleep between the newlyweds on their wedding night. Then I woke up a few minutes ago because he was dragging that cord across my back.”

Linda stared at her husband.

“You did what?”

Frank immediately became defensive.

“Don’t make it sound like something it wasn’t. It’s an old family blessing.”

“Whose family?”

“Mine.”

Linda gave him a long look.

“Frank, we’ve been married for thirty-four years. Your father did not sleep in our bed on our wedding night.”

Daniel turned toward his mother.

“Wait. Seriously?”
