Part 2 of 3

“I never wanted to come between you and Travis.”

I sat beside her.

“Mom, you’re not responsible for what happened.”

She looked down at her hands.

“Patricia kept telling me I was costing you too much money. Travis said you were working extra hours because we couldn’t afford everything.”

My chest tightened.

I had been paying nearly every household expense.

Travis had access to comfortable living arrangements, vacations, expensive clothing, and generous spending allowances.

Yet he had convinced my mother that she was a financial burden.

Dorothy finally explained how the marks on her arm had appeared.

Three days earlier, Sadie had been hungry and crying.

Patricia demanded that Dorothy finish cleaning before preparing anything for the little girl.

When Dorothy tried to feed her granddaughter, Patricia grabbed her wrist and pulled her away from the refrigerator.

Dorothy lost her balance and struck the kitchen counter.

The following day, Patricia became angry when Dorothy defended Wesley after a nighttime accident.

“She told him he should be ashamed of himself,” my mother whispered. “I couldn’t let her speak to him that way.”

I held her hand carefully.

“You spent your entire life protecting me. Now it’s my responsibility to make sure you’re safe.”

Then I called my attorney.

The Cameras They Had Forgotten

My attorney, Bennett Holloway, had handled my investments for years.

After hearing what happened, he advised me to arrange medical care for my mother, contact local authorities, and preserve any available evidence.

I followed his advice.

The medical examination documented Dorothy’s injuries, and the officers recorded her account.

Later that evening, I remembered the security cameras installed inside our former home when the children were younger.

Travis knew about the cameras near the driveway.

He had apparently forgotten the ones covering the kitchen and main hallway.

I opened the recording archive.

One video showed Patricia ordering my mother to pick up laundry she had deliberately scattered across the floor.

Another showed Wesley standing beside the kitchen table while Patricia scolded him.

Dorothy stepped forward to comfort him.

Patricia grabbed her wrist.

My mother stumbled against the counter.

The recording also showed Travis entering the kitchen shortly afterward.

He looked at Dorothy.

He looked at his mother.

Then he opened the refrigerator and walked away.

I watched the footage in silence.

There was no misunderstanding left to explain.

I preserved the recordings and forwarded them to my attorney and the investigating officer.

For years, I had believed that keeping my family life separate from my career was a sensible choice.

Now I realized that privacy had also allowed serious problems to remain hidden.

The $214,000 Secret

The following morning, Bennett arrived with a thick folder.

“Adelaide, there’s something else you need to see.”

He placed several financial statements on my desk.

Over the previous thirty months, Travis had transferred approximately $214,000 from our joint household account into an account controlled by Patricia.

I stared at the figures.

“What was the money for?”

“We’re still tracing the transactions, but there’s more.”

He showed me recurring payments of $3,800 a month.

They were connected to a luxury waterfront condominium leased in Patricia’s name.

I looked up in disbelief.

“She’s been living in our house. Why are we paying for another apartment?”

Bennett explained that the condominium had remained in use, although its full purpose still needed investigation.

There were also purchases of expensive jewelry, designer clothing, luxury hotel stays, and other personal expenses.

Then came another discovery.

Travis had obtained a $120,000 personal loan after listing household assets in his application.

My attorney was investigating whether any information had been misrepresented.

For years, Patricia had made my sick mother feel guilty for eating meals in our home.

Meanwhile, she had been enjoying a lifestyle funded largely by money I provided.

I looked at Bennett.

“I want every transaction reviewed properly. I don’t want revenge. I want the truth.”

He nodded.

“Then we’ll let the records establish what happened.”

The Threat That Backfired

When Travis realized I wasn’t returning home, his attitude changed.

First came angry phone calls.

Then came messages accusing me of overreacting.

Finally, he appeared outside the mansion with Patricia.

Through the security intercom, I heard him demand that I open the gates.

“You can’t keep my children away from me!”

“Parenting arrangements will be handled through the proper legal process,” I replied.

Patricia leaned toward the camera.

“You think being a colonel makes you better than everyone else?”

“No, Patricia. But my position doesn’t require me to tolerate the way you’ve treated my family.”

Travis stepped forward.

“What do you think your commanding officers would say if they heard you abandoned your husband?”

I immediately understood what he intended to do.

He couldn’t pressure me through money anymore.

Now he wanted to threaten my professional reputation.

I saved the recording and informed my commanding officer that a personal legal dispute might lead to allegations involving my military career.

Three days later, Travis submitted a complaint claiming I had neglected my family and used my rank to intimidate him.

He also challenged the account of my mother’s treatment.

But his accusations created an opportunity for my attorney to present the evidence.

The Courtroom Where Everything Changed

Eleven days after my return, we attended the first major custody hearing.

I wore a simple navy suit.

There were no medals, military escorts, or special privileges.

I was there as a mother asking the court to protect her children.

Travis sat beside his attorney, looking confident.

Patricia sat behind him wearing pearls and an expression of offended innocence.

His attorney argued that Travis had been the more available parent during my military assignments.
