“Your Honor, this is a complicated custody dispute involving serious concerns about Mrs. Caldwell’s judgment. Allowing her to present unsupported accusations would waste the court’s time.”

Judge Holloway turned toward him.

“Mr. Vance, I will decide what wastes this court’s time.”

Serena opened the diaper bag and removed a hard blue document case.

Preston shook his head with an amused expression.

“What is that?” he asked. “A diary?”

Serena placed the case on the table.

“No. It is a timeline.”

She removed several folders, each labeled with a date and category.

The first contained hospital records confirming that Preston had been listed as Willow’s father throughout the pregnancy.

This contradicted the statement in his petition claiming he had questioned paternity for nearly a year.

The second folder contained security logs from Serena’s medical clinic.

Although Preston had sworn that he and Serena had lived separately for eleven months, the records showed that he had accompanied her to multiple appointments during that period.

He had signed in using the name of an employee from his property company.

Clifford quickly rose.

“Those records should not have been obtained.”

“They were released to Mrs. Caldwell because they concern her own appointments,” Judge Holloway said.

Serena opened another folder.

“The petition also states that Preston provided no financial support because we had been separated,” she explained. “However, these records show household payments, medical expenses, and insurance documents identifying us as a married couple living at the same address.”

Preston leaned toward Clifford.

For the first time that morning, the two men were no longer smiling.

The Messages They Thought Were Gone

The third folder contained printed messages.

Some had been sent by Preston.

Others came from Lorraine.

Serena had preserved them before Preston replaced her phone and removed her access to the family cloud account.

Judge Holloway read the first page silently.

Her expression hardened.

“Mr. Hale, did you send a message stating that your wife would lose access to medical care unless she signed a guardianship agreement?”

Preston cleared his throat.

“That sentence has been misunderstood.”

“It appears very clear.”

Clifford stepped forward.

“Married couples often say regrettable things during private disagreements.”

Serena turned to the next page.

“The following message came from Lorraine Hale three days later.”

Judge Holloway read it aloud.

“Once the child is born, Serena will have no income and nowhere to go. The court will choose the family with resources.”

Lorraine’s face became pale.

“I was discussing practical concerns,” she said quickly.

“You were discussing removing a newborn from her mother,” Serena replied.

Lorraine glared at her.

“That child belongs to the Hale family.”

A silence fell across the courtroom.

Judge Holloway placed the message on the bench.

“A child does not belong to a family like a building or investment account, Mrs. Hale.”

Madeline shifted nervously in her chair.

The bracelet moved again beneath the light.

Serena looked at it.

“Your Honor, may I ask the woman beside my husband one question?”

Clifford objected, but Judge Holloway allowed it.

Serena faced Madeline.

“Where did you get that bracelet?”

Madeline looked toward Preston.

“It was a gift.”

“From whom?”

“Preston.”

Serena nodded slowly.

“That bracelet was listed among the personal property Preston claimed I had secretly removed from the estate. His petition describes my taking it as evidence of irrational behavior.”

Judge Holloway looked down at the filing.

Clifford began turning pages.

Serena continued.

“Yet the bracelet is currently on Madeline Cross’s wrist. This proves Preston knowingly included a false statement in his sworn petition.”

Madeline immediately tried to remove it.

The clasp would not open.

Her hands began trembling as she pulled at the delicate chain.

“Preston told me it belonged to his family,” she said.

Serena met her eyes.

“He tells everyone that everything belongs to his family.”

What Madeline Had Been Promised

Judge Holloway ordered Madeline to remain in the courtroom as a potential witness.

Within minutes, the confident woman who had entered beside Preston appeared uncertain.

When questioned, Madeline admitted Preston had told her Serena would permanently leave the estate after the baby was born.

He had promised Madeline that she would move into the main house and help raise Willow.

“He said Serena had agreed to it,” Madeline explained. “He told me she did not want the responsibility of motherhood.”

Serena closed her eyes briefly.

She had imagined many cruel things Preston might say about her.

She had never imagined he would tell another woman that she did not want her own child.

“Did Mrs. Caldwell ever say that to you directly?” Judge Holloway asked.

“No.”

“Did you ever speak to her?”

“No.”

“Yet you planned to enter her home and raise her newborn?”

Madeline looked down.

“I believed Preston.”

Preston stared straight ahead.

Madeline finally removed the bracelet and placed it on the table.

“He gave me the nursery design plans,” she added quietly. “He said Lorraine had already selected a nanny and that Serena would only be permitted supervised visits.”

Lorraine whispered something under her breath.
