Minutes After Our Divorce Became Final, My Ex Smirked Beside His Mistress and Said, “You Didn’t Just Lose Your Husband—You Lost the Company Too.” She Laughed With a Birkin Secretly Charged to Our Corporate Account. I Simply Smiled and Walked Away. At 2:00 P.M., He Returned to Headquarters—Only to Find His Badge Disabled, Security Waiting, and the “Ex-Wife” He Mocked Taking Her Seat as CEO

Part 2 of 3

Two O’Clock

At exactly 2:00 p.m., Grant’s black SUV stopped in front of Hartwell Industries headquarters.

According to the security footage I later watched, he stepped out smiling.

Vanessa wasn’t with him.

Grant walked through the revolving doors, greeted the receptionist, and pressed his badge against the executive turnstile.

Red light.

He tried again.

Red.

Grant frowned.

A security supervisor approached.

“Mr. Holloway, I’m going to need your badge.”

Grant stared at him.

“Excuse me?”

“Your access has been suspended.”

Grant laughed.

“By whom?”

Then he looked across the lobby.

I was standing beside the elevators.

His face changed instantly.

“Claire?”

I held a thick folder against my side.

“You’re late.”

He walked toward me.

“What are you doing here?”

“Working.”

“You don’t work here anymore.”

I almost smiled.

“Actually, Grant, you’re the one who doesn’t work here anymore.”

The Ground Floor

I didn’t begin in the executive suite.

I began in procurement.

Grant’s cousin, Preston Holloway, was sitting behind his desk when I entered.

He looked genuinely amused.

“Claire? Shouldn’t you be celebrating your freedom somewhere?”

I placed a binder on his desk.

His smile disappeared.

Inside were records connecting several preferred vendors to companies controlled by people close to him.

“We’ve reviewed the contracts your department approved over the last eighteen months,” I said.

Preston leaned forward.

“Grant approved those.”

“Some of them. You approved the rest.”

He swallowed.

“You can’t just walk in here and accuse people.”

“I’m not here to argue with you.”

Two members of Corporate Security appeared at the doorway.

“HR will explain the next steps.”

Within an hour, the atmosphere throughout Hartwell had completely changed.

Several access cards were disabled.

Outside vendors were suspended pending review.

Employees who had been afraid to speak suddenly began approaching Compliance.

The network Grant had spent years building wasn’t nearly as powerful as he believed.

It only looked powerful because no one had challenged it.

The Call That Changed Everything

At 3:17 p.m., my phone rang.

Dad.

I answered immediately.

“The first phase is done.”

Silence.

Then I heard his voice.

It sounded strained.

“Claire, slow down.”

My stomach tightened.

“What’s wrong?”

“Grant’s mother knows.”

Evelyn Holloway.

I had underestimated her.

Grant enjoyed power, but Evelyn understood systems.

For years, she had quietly positioned people around the company while maintaining the appearance of being nothing more than a well-connected businesswoman.

Dad continued.

“There’s a debt agreement I didn’t know about. They may be able to force a board vote.”

For the first time that day, I felt afraid.

Removing Grant was one thing.

Saving Hartwell was another.

“How much?”

Dad told me.

I sat down.

It was enough to put the company under enormous pressure.

Grant had prepared for this.

If we removed him, his family intended to use Hartwell’s financial obligations against us.

It was clever.

But they had forgotten one thing.

My mother.

The Trust Nobody Remembered

My mother, Elaine Hartwell, passed away years earlier.

She had inherited significant assets from her own family, most of which were placed into a private trust.

I had never touched it.

Grant knew the trust existed, but he assumed I would never risk it.

He was wrong.

That evening, I met privately with the trustees and our legal team.

I didn’t need to buy the entire company.

I needed to secure the debt threatening it.

It was the biggest financial decision I had ever made.

My attorney looked at me.

“Once you sign this, there’s no easy way back.”

I thought about my grandfather’s warehouse.

My father’s forty years of work.

Thousands of employees who had nothing to do with Grant’s ambition.

Then I signed.

“I’m not paying to protect Grant’s mistakes,” I said. “I’m protecting what my family built.”

The Boardroom Surprise

The emergency board meeting began the next morning.
