Happy Soul Moral Stories

My 10-Year-Old Daughter Suddenly Stopped Answering My Calls for Four Days—When I Went to My Ex-Wife’s House, the Blinds Were Closed, Her Car Was Gone, and a Neighbor Told Me Something Had Seemed Wrong for Days, but After I Entered the Backyard and Finally Found My Daughter, She Clung to My Shirt and Whispered, “Dad, There’s Something You Need to Know About Mom”

Part 1 of 3

The first thing my daughter said when I broke the lock on the metal cage was not “Dad.”

It was:

“Don’t look in the pool.”

I froze with the bolt cutters still in my hands.

My ten-year-old daughter, Lily, was crouched against the back of a large dog kennel on the patio behind my ex-wife’s house. Her hair was tangled. Her lips looked dry. She was wearing the same purple sweatshirt she’d had on when I dropped her off the previous Friday.

It was Tuesday.

I pulled the door open.

“Lily. Come here.”

She tried to stand and stumbled.

I caught her under the arms.

She wrapped herself around me so tightly I could barely breathe.

Then she looked over my shoulder toward the swimming pool.

The water was perfectly still.

“Dad, please.”

“Please what?”

Her fingers dug into my shirt.

“Don’t look down there.”

I lowered my voice.

“Why?”

She pressed her face against my chest.

“Because I think Mom’s in there.”

Four Days Without an Answer

My name is Matt Walker.

My ex-wife, Rachel, and I had been divorced for three years.

We shared custody of Lily, and although Rachel and I disagreed about plenty of things, we had managed to keep most of it away from our daughter.

At least, I thought we had.

Rachel remarried eighteen months after our divorce.

Her new husband, Derek Collins, seemed normal enough at first.

Quiet. Helpful. Almost overly polite.

Whenever I picked Lily up, Derek would stand near the doorway and say things like, “She had a great week,” or “We’re keeping her on a better bedtime schedule.”

I didn’t like the way he said we, but that wasn’t a reason to start a war.

Then Lily began changing.

She stopped asking to bring friends to her mother’s house.

She started getting stomachaches on Sunday afternoons before I dropped her off.

Twice, she asked whether she could stay one extra night with me.

The last time, she held onto me in Rachel’s driveway.

“Can I just come back tomorrow?”

“Your mom’s expecting you.”

Lily stared at the front door.

“I know.”

I should have asked another question.

Instead, I kissed the top of her head and told her I would call that night.

That memory would come back to me later.

Over and over.

On Friday evening, Lily answered my call but barely spoke.

Saturday, nothing.

Sunday, nothing.

Rachel didn’t answer either.

I texted.

No response.

Monday morning, Derek finally replied.

They’re fine. Rachel lost her phone. Lily’s grounded from electronics.

I called him immediately.

He declined it.

Then came another text.

Stop creating drama.

That was the sentence that got me into my truck.

The House Was Too Quiet

Rachel lived in a suburban neighborhood outside Columbus, Ohio.

When I arrived, her SUV was gone.

Derek’s pickup was gone too.

The blinds were closed.

I knocked.

Then harder.

“Rachel?”

Nothing.

“Lily?”

Still nothing.

A voice came from next door.

“Matt?”

It was Mrs. Parker, Rachel’s neighbor. She was in her late sixties and seemed to know everything that happened on that street.

She walked toward me holding a small watering can.

“Have you talked to Rachel?” I asked.

Her expression changed.

“Not since last week.”

“What about Lily?”

She looked toward the house.

“I heard her.”

My stomach tightened.

“Heard her doing what?”

Mrs. Parker set the watering can down.

“Crying. Maybe yelling. It happened a few times.”

“Why didn’t you call somebody?”

She looked embarrassed.

“Derek told me Lily was having tantrums because of the custody arrangement. He said Rachel was dealing with it.”

I looked at the closed blinds.

“When was the last time you saw Rachel?”

Mrs. Parker thought for a moment.

“Friday, maybe.”

Then she added something that made me turn back.

“But Derek was outside late last night.”

“Doing what?”

She pointed toward the backyard.

“He carried several black bags out there. Big ones. I thought he was cleaning up.”

“Out where?”

Her eyes moved toward the fence.

“The pool.”

I called Rachel again.

From inside the house, faintly, I heard a phone ringing.

I didn’t wait anymore.

I went around back.

The gate was locked.

I climbed the fence.

And that was when I saw the cage.

“Dad, I Tried to Be Quiet”

Lily shook in my arms while I carried her away from the patio.

There was an empty plastic water bottle inside the cage and a folded blanket on the concrete.

Nothing else.

I sat her on a lounge chair.

“Where’s your mom?”

She immediately looked toward the pool.

“I don’t know.”

“When did you see her last?”

“Sunday night.”

I pulled out my phone and dialed 911.

Lily grabbed my wrist.

“Derek said if I screamed, nobody would believe me.”

I crouched in front of her.

“Listen to me. You’re not in trouble.”

Her chin trembled.

“Mom tried to take me.”

“Take you where?”

“Away.”

The dispatcher answered.

While I gave the address, Lily kept watching the pool.

There were dark shapes beneath the water near the deep end.

Bags.

Three, maybe four.

I moved toward them.

Lily screamed.

“Dad, no!”

I stopped.

She covered her face.

“He put Mom’s things in there.”

That was different.

“Her things?”
