The Next Morning, My Husband Put a Pen in My Hand and Said, “Just Sign Here.” He Had No Idea What I Already Knew

Part 2 of 3

“What happened to my baby?”

Dad struggled to answer.

“The baby didn’t make it through what happened afterward.”

I closed my eyes.

For seven years, Harrison had told me another story.

He claimed I had been unconscious for months and that Owen had arrived while I was recovering.

It had all been constructed around my missing memories.

My real baby was gone.

And someone else’s child had been placed into my arms.

But Dad wasn’t finished.

Before the accident, my late mother had established a substantial trust for me.

Over the following years, large amounts had been transferred from accounts connected to that trust.

Those transfers closely matched the early funding and expansion of Harrison’s company.

Suddenly I remembered all the papers Harrison had placed beneath my fingers over the years.

“Sign here, sweetheart. It’s for your medical coverage.”

Or:

“I just need your signature for the insurance renewal.”

I had trusted him.

So I signed.

The Papers Harrison Needed Me to Sign

That evening, Harrison sat beside me.

He took my hand with the same gentle touch that had comforted me for years.

“Tomorrow, an attorney is coming over. I need you to sign a few documents.”

“What are they for?”

“Nothing complicated. They’re about Owen’s future.”

I leaned toward him as though I still depended completely on his judgment.

“Of course. Whatever you think is best.”

He kissed my forehead.

Then he smiled.

For the first time, I could see that smile.

It belonged to a man who believed I still couldn’t see anything.

What Harrison didn’t know was that my father had already contacted attorney Meredith Sloan.

And according to her review, the papers Harrison wanted signed would give him control over some of the remaining assets connected to my trust.

The following morning, I heard Harrison and Celeste talking quietly in the kitchen.

I moved closer without making a sound.

Through the partially open door, I watched Harrison put his hand around Celeste’s waist.

She stepped away.

“Not here.”

Harrison smiled.

“Marissa is outside. She can’t see us.”

Celeste lowered her voice.

“She’s asking too many questions.”

“It won’t matter after today. Once she signs, we’re finished.”

Then Harrison kissed her.

I expected my heart to shatter.

Strangely, it didn’t.

There were already too many larger truths.

The betrayal wasn’t simply that my husband loved another woman.

It was that he had built an entire world around my dependence.

“What Exactly Am I Signing?”

Around noon, a legal representative arrived with two assistants.

Harrison guided me into the living room and placed a folder in front of me.

“Everything is ready, sweetheart.”

I touched the folder.

“Read it to me.”

His breathing changed.

“There’s no reason. I’ve already reviewed everything.”

“Then reading it shouldn’t be a problem.”

Celeste stepped in.

“Marissa, legal language will only overwhelm you.”

I smiled.

“Then perhaps I shouldn’t sign legal documents I don’t understand.”

The room became silent.

Harrison forced a laugh.

“Don’t make this difficult.”

He placed a pen into my hand.

“Sign here.”

I set it down.

“What exactly am I giving up?”

His patience began to disappear.

“Nothing we haven’t already discussed.”

I tilted my head.

“I don’t remember discussing the transfer of trust rights, property interests, or company-related assets.”

Harrison went completely still.

Celeste stared at me.

“Who told you that?”

I slowly turned toward her.

Not toward the sound of her voice.

Directly toward her face.

“That’s a beautiful emerald blouse, Celeste.”

Her coffee cup slipped from her hand.

Harrison stood.

“What did you say?”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“And your navy tie looks expensive, Harrison.”

He waved one hand in front of my face.

My eyes followed it.

His expression changed instantly.

“You can see?”

I stood.

“Yes.”

“Since when?”

“Since Owen sent me down those stairs.”

For several seconds, Harrison said nothing.

I could almost watch him calculating everything he had done around me since the fall.

Then the front door opened.

My father walked inside with Meredith Sloan.

His hair was almost completely silver now.

Seven years had passed since I had last seen his face.

“Marissa.”

My father struggled to keep his voice steady.

I wanted to run to him.

But first, I needed answers.

The Truth About Owen

Meredith placed several documents on the table.

They showed transfers connected to my trust, disputed authorizations, property records, and early financing connected to Harrison’s company.

Harrison immediately became defensive.

“This proves nothing.”

I reached into my bag.

“Then let’s talk about Owen.”

Celeste’s face changed.

I placed the genetic report on the table.

“Owen isn’t my biological son.”

Harrison tried to dismiss it.

But Meredith produced the original birth record.

Celeste was listed as Owen’s mother.

I turned toward her.

“Tell me the truth.”

Celeste began crying.

“You had lost your baby. You couldn’t remember anything. Harrison thought giving you a child would help you recover.”

I stared at her.

“Giving me a child?”

“Owen needed a family.”

“He already had a mother. You.”

My father asked the question everyone was avoiding.

“Who is Owen’s father?”

Celeste looked at Harrison.

That was enough.

“Harrison?” I whispered.
