Part 2 of 3

“That’s ridiculous. Dad manages that account.”

“Dad receives the statements,” I replied. “I pay them.”

My father stared at me.

“Meredith, this is not the place for financial discussions.”

“It became the place when my son was given a paper plate at a dinner I was expected to finance.”

My mother pressed her napkin against the table.

“You are embarrassing your father over a child’s meal.”

I looked directly at her.

“No, Mom. Grant embarrassed this family when he decided my money was welcome but my child was not.”

The room became silent again.

I turned back to the server.

“Please bring my son the steak he originally chose, with mashed potatoes. He would also like the chocolate dessert.”

The server nodded.

“I’ll place that order immediately.”

Finley looked up at me, uncertain.

“Is it really okay?”

I squeezed his hand.

“Yes, sweetheart. You deserve to be treated like every other guest at this table.”

The Gift from the Perfect Son

Grant suddenly stood.

He had always been talented at redirecting attention whenever the truth moved too close to him.

“Everyone, let’s remember why we are here,” he announced. “Tonight is about Dad, not Meredith’s need for attention.”

He reached into a leather bag beside his chair and removed a long navy box.

My mother smiled with immediate relief.

Grant carried the box to our father and placed it before him.

“Dad, you spent your life providing for us. I wanted to give you something worthy of everything you accomplished.”

Franklin opened the box.

Inside was a luxury watch with a polished gold face and a dark leather band.

Several guests gasped.

My aunt applauded.

My mother covered her mouth.

“Grant, that must have cost a fortune,” she said proudly.

My father looked deeply moved.

“Son, you didn’t have to do this.”

Grant placed one hand on his shoulder.

“You deserve it.”

Then he glanced toward me with quiet triumph.

He believed he had restored the family’s preferred story.

Grant was the generous son.

I was the difficult daughter.

Unfortunately for him, I recognized the watch.

I opened my folder and removed a printed transaction record.

“It is a beautiful gift,” I said.

The applause faded.

I walked to my father and placed the document beside the watch.

“What is this?” Franklin asked.

“The purchase confirmation.”

Grant’s posture stiffened.

“That watch was bought four days ago using the family health reserve.”

My mother’s expression emptied.

Three years earlier, after her surgery, I had created a separate account for follow-up appointments, prescriptions, and unexpected medical needs. I deposited money into it each month because my parents worried about the cost of retirement.

Grant had been given access only because he lived closer to them.

“The watch cost eleven thousand eight hundred dollars,” I continued. “The payment came directly from the account intended for Mom’s medical care.”

My father looked at Grant.

His pride disappeared so quickly that it was difficult to watch.

“Tell me she is mistaken.”

Grant reached for the document.

I moved it away.

“She created that herself,” he said. “She is trying to make me look dishonest.”

I held up my phone.

“The bank sent the purchase alert to me. I also called the store this afternoon and confirmed the transaction.”

Grant’s face turned pale.

Marissa slowly placed her glass on the table.

“You told me you paid for that watch from your business bonus.”

“This is not the time, Marissa.”

“Then when is the time?” she asked. “Because you also told me you were covering this dinner.”

The Bill Finally Found Its Owner

At that moment, the restaurant manager entered the room with the head server.

He greeted me politely before turning toward Grant.

“We have removed Ms. Mercer’s card as requested. The remaining balance now requires a different payment method.”

Grant straightened his jacket.

“Fine. Use mine.”

He handed over a silver credit card.

The server processed it on a small payment terminal.

A few seconds later, the screen displayed a refusal.

The server tried again.

The same result appeared.

Grant pulled out a second card.

That one was also rejected.

A heavy silence filled the room.

My father spoke first.

“How much is the bill?”

The manager answered calmly.

“The balance for the private event, excluding Ms. Mercer and her son, is six thousand three hundred and twenty dollars.”
