But When She Opened the Medical Records He Had Hidden for Years, She Discovered a Truth That Changed Everything…

Part 2 of 3

“Yes. Owen and Wyatt. They’re my sons.”

Preston took one step forward.

“Your sons?”

“That’s what I said.”

He glanced at Grant.

“Well, I suppose medical treatments have come a long way.”

Grant looked at him calmly.

“I’m Grant Mercer, Audrey’s husband. And these are our boys.”

Brielle pushed her chair back.

“Preston, you told me Audrey couldn’t have children.”

He shifted uncomfortably.

“That’s what we were told back then.”

I shook my head.

“No, Preston. That’s what you chose to tell everyone.”

Cynthia covered her mouth.

I could feel my hands trembling, but I refused to let my sons become part of an uncomfortable confrontation.

Grant noticed immediately.

“I’ll take the boys to the coffee shop down the street. Call me when you’re ready.”

I thanked him and watched them leave.

Owen waved enthusiastically.

“Bye, Mommy! Love you!”

“I love you too, sweetheart.”

When the door closed, Brielle turned back toward Preston.

“I think you owe me an explanation.”

The Folder That Changed His Wife’s Expression

Brielle suggested that we move into the home office, away from the guests.

Preston reluctantly followed.

Cynthia came with us.

Once inside, I opened my handbag and removed a thin folder.

I had brought it from my car after Brielle made an earlier comment about my supposed medical history.

I hadn’t planned to show anyone.

But Preston had publicly discussed my health, and I was no longer willing to let his version remain unchallenged.

“These are my medical records from our marriage,” I explained. “The conclusions are clearly written.”

Brielle accepted the folder.

She read the first page, then the second.

Her expression gradually changed.

“It says the evaluation wasn’t completed.”

“That’s correct.”

She looked at Preston.

“You told me every doctor had confirmed Audrey was the problem.”

“It’s complicated,” he answered.

“Then explain it.”

Instead, Preston stared at the floor.

Brielle walked to a nearby cabinet and retrieved another folder.

“When we started fertility consultations, you gave our specialist these older results. You told me they were from after your divorce.”

She placed a document beside mine.

The date was unmistakable.

It was from the final year of our marriage.

I recognized it immediately.

Our specialist had mentioned that particular test during one of our last appointments.

“Preston,” Brielle said quietly, “you already knew further testing was recommended.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I knew there might be an issue. That doesn’t mean anything was certain.”

“Nobody is saying it was certain,” I replied. “That’s exactly the point. We needed more information, but you decided the answer was me.”

Cynthia sank into a chair.

“You told us Audrey refused to continue treatment.”

I turned toward her.

“I refused to continue being blamed for something neither of us fully understood.”

For the first time, Cynthia had nothing to say.

The Second Secret Waiting Behind His Perfect Life

Preston suddenly changed the subject.

“This isn’t really about medical records, is it? You’re upset because my new job offer is being delayed.”

I stared at him.

“What job offer?”

He laughed bitterly.

“Don’t pretend you don’t know. Your law firm is involved in that complaint against my company.”

I understood immediately.

Several months earlier, a former employee of Preston’s company had contacted my firm regarding a disputed termination.

The moment I recognized Preston’s involvement, I disclosed our history and withdrew from the matter.

Another attorney handled everything.

I had no access to confidential case discussions.

“I removed myself from that matter before any substantive work began,” I told him.

Brielle frowned.

“What complaint?”

Preston avoided her eyes.

“A former employee is making accusations. It’s nothing serious.”

“Then why is your new employer reviewing your references?”

He didn’t answer.

I wasn’t going to discuss someone else’s legal case.

“Whatever is happening with your career has nothing to do with why I’m here,” I said. “You invited me, Preston. You embarrassed me in front of your family. And now you want to blame me for something else.”

Brielle looked between us.

“You asked me to invite Audrey because you said you wanted everyone to get along.”

Preston remained silent.

“Did you really invite her here just so you could make that toast?”

He looked away.

That was answer enough for Brielle.

The Apology Everyone Finally Heard

I gathered my documents.

“I’m leaving now. But before I go, I’m correcting what you said in front of everyone.”

Preston frowned.

“You don’t need to turn this into a public spectacle.”

I looked directly at him.

“You made it public when you raised your glass.”

We returned to the backyard.

The decorations were still beautiful. The food remained untouched on several tables.

Guests quietly watched as I approached my chair.

I took a steady breath.

“Before I leave, there’s something I need to clarify.”

The garden fell silent.

“Earlier, Preston suggested that our marriage ended because I was unable to have children. That was never a confirmed medical diagnosis. Our evaluation was incomplete, and I never agreed to have my private medical history discussed at this celebration.”

I paused.

“I wish Preston and Brielle’s baby good health and happiness. But I won’t accept being misrepresented.”
