I Never Confronted Him. I Made One Call Friday Morning Instead—and Hours Before He Was Supposed to Say “I Do,” His Phone Started Ringing

Part 3 of 3

Brooke replied:

Then make sure everything clears before we leave.

I sat down.

Until that moment, part of me had wondered how much Brooke actually knew.

Ryan lied easily. I knew that from experience.

Maybe he’d told her the money was his.

Maybe he’d told her I had agreed to help.

Those messages answered the question.

Not completely.

But enough.

Allison read them twenty minutes later.

“Save the originals exactly where they are. Don’t forward them around.”

“Already done.”

Then she told me to get dressed.

The Ceremony Still Happened

We drove north just after noon.

Allison sat beside me.

A process server followed in another car.

I hadn’t planned to attend Ryan’s wedding.

Even after finding the charges, I had no desire to stand in the back of a ceremony watching my ex marry someone else.

We weren’t going for the ceremony.

We were going because Allison wanted Ryan formally served, and because the temporary court order covering certain disputed property and devices had been issued that morning.

When we arrived, the ceremony had already started.

So we waited.

Through the windows, I could see Brooke walking between the rows of chairs.

Her gown had cost $28,000.

My account had been charged for it.

Around her neck was the emerald necklace.

The orchids were still on the ceremony arch, but the reception area beyond it looked unfinished.

No floral wall.

No band equipment.

Several tables were bare.

The ceremony ended anyway.

People applauded.

Ryan kissed his new wife.

For perhaps three minutes, everything looked exactly like the wedding photographs he’d imagined.

Then the guests started walking toward the reception.

And the questions began.

“Where’s the band?”

“Are they still setting up?”

“Why are the shuttles leaving?”

I stayed near the entrance with Allison.

Ryan saw me first.

His face changed.

He walked toward us quickly.

“What are you doing here?”

Allison stepped slightly in front of me.

“Ryan Mercer?”

The process server handed him the papers.

Ryan stared at them.

Brooke came up beside him.

She received her own copy.

“What is this?” she asked.

“A lawsuit,” Allison said.

Ryan looked at me.

“You actually sued me on my wedding day?”

“I filed before your wedding day.”

Guests had begun slowing down around us.

Ryan noticed.

His voice became louder.

“This is my ex-girlfriend. She’s upset I’m getting married.”

I didn’t answer.

“She’s been trying to sabotage this wedding because she can’t handle that I moved on.”

Brooke looked at me.

“You froze everything because of him marrying me?”

I took out my phone.

“No.”

I played the recording from Ryan’s call to my CFO.

His own voice came through clearly.

“You need to reopen the funding. Megan isn’t thinking clearly.”

Then my CFO:

“You’re asking me to release corporate funds for your wedding?”

Ryan reached toward the phone.

“Turn that off.”

I stepped back.

“Don’t touch it.”

Brooke was staring at him now.

“You told me the company approved the sponsorship.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Brooke, not now.”

I opened the recovered messages.

I didn’t need to read many.

Just one.

Use Hartwell’s name. No vendor is going to question a company that size.

Brooke’s face went still.

Then I showed Ryan’s reply.

Megan won’t make a scene.

Nobody said anything for several seconds.

The Necklace

Brooke reached behind her neck.

Her hands shook as she opened the clasp.

She held the emerald necklace in her palm.

“You said the jewelry account was yours.”

Ryan lowered his voice.

“We’ll talk privately.”

“Was any of it yours?”

“Brooke.”

“The estate?”

He didn’t answer.

“The dress?”

Still nothing.

She looked at me.

“He told me the card belonged to an investment account he controlled.”

I looked at the messages on my phone.

“You still knew Hartwell hadn’t agreed to sponsor this.”

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

That was the difference.

Ryan had lied to Brooke.

But Brooke had also helped him use my company’s name.

Both things could be true.

Ryan looked around at the guests watching him.

Then back at me.

“You couldn’t just let me have one day.”

I almost laughed.

Instead, I said:

“It wasn’t yours to buy.”

He stepped toward me.

Allison told him to stop.

He didn’t.

His hand struck my shoulder hard enough to send me backward into the edge of a table.

A glass fell.

I hit the table with my hip and caught myself badly. My teeth cut the inside of my lower lip.

For a second, the room went silent.

Then security moved.

Two guards pulled Ryan away from me.

“Get off me!”

The venue manager was already calling the police.

I pressed a napkin against my lip.

Above us, one of the security cameras pointed directly toward the table.

Allison looked at it.

Then at me.

“Don’t move.”

At 4:17 p.m., the estate officially shut down the reception.

Sixteen Months Later

The civil case and criminal investigation took months.

The bank reversed most of the transactions that had not fully settled. Other money was recovered through the civil case and the sale of Ryan’s assets.

The device records and recovered documents tied both Ryan and Brooke to the false sponsorship materials.

Brooke cooperated with investigators. She returned the jewelry and other disputed property and eventually received five years of probation along with a substantial financial judgment.

Ryan pleaded guilty to charges connected to identity theft, forged documents, unauthorized computer access, and the incident at the estate.

He received twenty-two months in custody and remained responsible for restitution.

I didn’t attend sentencing.

There was nothing I needed to hear from him.

Sixteen months after the wedding, Hartwell Event Systems moved into a larger office overlooking the East River.

One afternoon, Tara came into my office carrying a quarterly report.

“You should see this.”

Our fastest-growing product was a fraud-detection service developed after we rebuilt the security weaknesses Ryan had exploited.

I looked at the revenue number.

Then Tara laughed.

“Those orchids turned out to be expensive in more ways than one.”

On a shelf behind my desk, I still kept the original expense report from that Monday morning.

$18,400.

Imported orchids.

I had kept it not because I wanted to remember Ryan.

I kept it because one ridiculous charge had forced me to look closely at everything I’d trusted without checking.

I folded the report once and placed it back in the drawer.

This time, I knew exactly who had access to it.
