Part 3 of 3

Maisie asked, “Do you like pancakes?”

He blinked. “Yes.”

“Chocolate-chip ones?”

“Especially those.”

She nodded, satisfied.

Then Lenore entered without knocking.

“This conversation has gone far enough.”

Benjamin stood.

“It has barely begun.”

Lenore looked at the children as though they were entries in a legal document.

“You cannot accept three children into this family without proof.”

“We will arrange testing,” Mara said.

Tessa removed the wedding note from Mara’s purse and held it beside the returned envelope.

“You wrote this word,” she told Lenore. “The R and the F are the same.”

Benjamin compared them.

“Did you write refused?”

Lenore remained silent.

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

Maisie began to cry softly, and Cole wrapped an arm around her.

Benjamin stared at his mother.

“Why?”

Lenore’s composure slipped.

“Because you were about to control the company. The board questioned your judgment. Katherine’s family offered stability. Mara offered uncertainty.”

Mara’s hands trembled. “You decided what my children were before they were born.”

“I did what was necessary.”

Tessa frowned. “We’re not a problem.”

Benjamin’s voice broke. “No, you are not.”

Lenore lifted her chin. “Everything I did was for this family.”

Benjamin opened the door.

“Leave.”

“Benjamin—”

“Leave.”

After Lenore walked out, Benjamin leaned against the desk.

“I missed everything.”

Mara did not soften the truth.

“Yes.”

“Were you alone?”

“Most of the time.”

He bowed his head.

“I don’t know how to apologize for seven years.”

“You cannot repair seven years in one afternoon. You cannot enter their lives because guilt is loud today, and you cannot promise you will stay until you have proved that you know how.”

Benjamin nodded.

“Then I will begin without promises.”

When Mara gathered the children to leave, Maisie stepped toward him.

“Can I hug you?”

Benjamin closed his eyes briefly.

“Only if you want to.”

She wrapped her arms around his neck. Cole joined her, then Tessa. Benjamin held them carefully, as though the moment might vanish.

The Name Beneath the Fourth Circle

That evening, after the children fell asleep in a hotel suite outside Newport, Benjamin called.

“I went to my mother’s office.”

Mara stood beside the window.

“What did you find?”

“A file with your name on it.”

It contained copies of Mara’s letters, medical records, school pictures, photographs from Harbor Steps, and images of her house taken over several years.

“She has been watching us?”

“Yes. And there was something else.”

“What?”

“A sealed DNA report with Cole’s name on it.”

Mara gripped the phone.

“Cole has never taken a DNA test.”

“The report says he is not my son.”

“That report is false.”

“I believe you.”

“Then where did she get his sample?”

“I’m trying to find out.”

Mara opened the bedroom door.

Tessa, Cole, and Maisie slept sideways across one bed, their feet tangled beneath the blanket.

On the nightstand sat a cream envelope that had not been there earlier.

There was no stamp and no name, only one sentence across the front.

Ask Benjamin what happened to the fourth baby.

Inside was an ultrasound image Mara had never seen.

Four small circles had been marked in black ink.

Three carried the names Tessa, Cole, and Maisie.

Beneath the fourth was one word.

Living.
