My Fiancée Warned Me, “You Trust the Housekeeper Too Much,” So I Pretended to Leave for a Four-Day Business Trip and Secretly Returned to Watch the Cameras. Forty-Five Minutes Later, I Saw the Housekeeper Step Between My Two Frightened Daughters and the Woman I Was Supposed to Marry—Then My 11-Year-Old Said, “Dad, I Tried to Tell You Months Ago”

Part 2 of 3

Rosalie remained calm.

“No, ma’am.”

“Then stay out of this.”

Rosalie didn’t move.

Kendra stepped closer.

“You seem to forget that you work here.”

“I haven’t forgotten.”

“Then act like it. You are an employee, Rosalie. You are not their parent, and you do not make decisions in this family.”

Rosalie glanced at my daughters.

Harper had quietly moved closer to Lucy.

That small movement broke something inside me.

My older daughter was positioning herself between her little sister and an adult.

And she did it naturally.

She had done this before.

How many times?

How many business trips?

How many evenings had I spent in restaurants discussing contracts while my daughters were learning how to protect each other inside their own home?

Then Rosalie said something I will never forget.

“I understand who employs me. But those children deserve to feel safe in their own home.”

Kendra laughed bitterly.

“Be very careful, Rosalie.”

“I am being careful.”

Rosalie walked over, retrieved Lucy’s stuffed elephant, and handed it back to her.

Lucy immediately hugged it.

Kendra stared at Rosalie.

“You may regret that.”

That was enough.

I stood so quickly that my chair rolled backward.

Nolan looked at me.

“Mr. Ellison?”

I pointed at the screen.

“Save everything from this morning. Then save the previous sixty days.”

He nodded.

I headed for the door.

But before I reached it, Nolan called my name.

“Sir, there’s something else you should see.”

The Footage I Almost Missed

He rewound recordings from previous weeks.

What we found made the first video look like only part of a much larger pattern.

Kendra behaved differently whenever I left.

She criticized the girls constantly. She restricted where they could sit. She repeatedly threatened to send Rosalie away if the girls complained to me.

Then we found something even more disturbing.

In one recording, Kendra entered my office while I was at a conference.

She opened a locked cabinet using a key I had never given her.

In another clip, she photographed documents from a household financial folder.

In a third, she sat at my desk using a tablet connected to one of our management accounts.

I stared at Nolan.

“Call my attorney.”

Then I added:

“And contact our accounting team. I want every account she has ever accessed reviewed immediately.”

My fake business trip had started as an attempt to determine whether Rosalie was trustworthy.

Instead, I was beginning to question the woman I was supposed to marry.

The Truth Inside the Accounts

My attorney, Meredith Sloan, arrived shortly after noon carrying a thick navy binder.

By then, Kendra had no idea I was home.

She walked into the main foyer and stopped when she saw me standing there.

Her face changed.

“Graham? What are you doing here?”

“The Toronto meeting was canceled.”

That was the final lie I ever told her.

Kendra smiled nervously.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

I looked toward the staircase.

Harper and Lucy stood there with Rosalie.

“Because I needed to see what happened when you thought I wasn’t watching.”

The color drained from Kendra’s face.

Meredith stepped forward and opened the binder.

Our accountants had found several transfers that required immediate investigation.

Over a period of months, more than $1 million had moved from an operational account through entities connected to someone close to Kendra.

Kendra began talking rapidly.

“Graham, I can explain that.”

“Then explain it.”

“It was supposed to be temporary. I was working on an opportunity for us.”

“You never had permission.”

“We were getting married!”

I stared at the engagement ring on her hand.

“Not anymore.”

Her eyes widened.

“You’re ending our engagement over money?”

I shook my head.

“This stopped being about money the moment I saw my daughters afraid of you.”

For once, Kendra had no answer.

The engagement ended that afternoon, and my legal team took over everything concerning the disputed transfers.

But there was still a harder conversation waiting for me.

One with my daughters.

“We Tried to Tell You”

After Kendra left the property, I sat with Harper and Lucy in the family room.

Rosalie started to leave.

“Please stay,” I told her.

She sat in an armchair nearby.

I looked at Harper.

“How long has this been happening?”

She hesitated.

“Since you got engaged.”

My chest tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Harper looked directly into my eyes.

“I did.”

I felt my entire body go still.

“When?”

“That night you were working in your office. I told you Kendra acted different when you weren’t home.”

Then I remembered.

I remembered my laptop.

The emails.

The phone vibrating beside me.

And I remembered what I had said.

I had told Harper that adjusting to a new family could be difficult and asked her to give Kendra a chance.

I had never even closed my computer.

“You were trying to tell me the truth,” I whispered.

Harper nodded.

Lucy leaned against her sister.

I covered my face for a moment.
