Part 2 of 3

The name caught in my throat, but I smiled and crawled inside.

“It’s an excellent harbor.”

“Did Dad call?”

Grant had left thirteen messages—some angry, some pleading, and one asking to speak with Eli.

“He did.”

“Can I call him back?”

Every protective instinct urged me to postpone it, yet shielding my son could not mean teaching him that affection disappeared whenever adults disappointed one another.

We placed the call on speaker.

Grant answered immediately.

“Eli?”

“Hi, Dad.”

“Are you all right, buddy?”

“I think so. We made a fort.”

“That sounds pretty great.”

Eli looked at me before asking the question he had carried all morning.

“Why didn’t you come with us?”

For once, Grant did not invent an easy explanation.

“Your mom and I have serious problems to work through.”

“Did you hurt her feelings?”

A long pause followed.

“Yes. I made selfish choices, and I’m sorry.”

“Are you coming home?”

“I don’t know.”

After the call, Eli climbed onto my lap and leaned against my shoulder. He did not ask for promises I could not give. He only wanted to finish his harbor.

That afternoon, Marion and I listened to Grant’s remaining messages. In the final recording, his voice was quieter than before.

“Natalie, Wade was not at that hotel to meet me. He was following Rebecca. I went there because I was trying to prevent something. Please call before you decide whom to trust.”

“He may be trying to confuse you,” Marion said.

“He probably is.”

Even so, I heard a strain in his voice that had nothing to do with losing the house, his reputation, or access to our accounts. He sounded like a man who feared he had run out of time.

Then a message arrived from an unfamiliar number.

Do not let Grant meet investigators alone. Ask him about your father’s last review.

My father, Samuel Avery, had passed away eleven years earlier following a sudden health crisis. He had founded a respected financial-consulting practice and taught me that numbers mattered only because people hid their choices behind them.

As far as I knew, he had never conducted a final review.

The Folder My Father Left Behind

That night, after Eli fell asleep inside his blanket fort, I opened an encrypted account my father had created for family records. Most folders contained deeds, insurance policies, and old tax returns. One folder, labeled with a date three days before he entered the hospital, required a second password.

I tried every obvious answer and failed. Then I remembered the advice he used to offer whenever a set of numbers refused to make sense.

Begin with the detail that does not belong.

I entered the name of the first false vendor I had found in Grant’s accounts: Juniper Ridge Strategies.

The folder opened.

Inside were bank statements, invoices, faded photographs, and a letter addressed to me.

My father wrote that if Juniper Ridge had appeared again, I should trace its ownership backward instead of following each payment forward. Someone near our family, he warned, had protected the arrangement through renamed companies and private trusts for many years.

One sentence appeared twice.

Do not confront anyone until you identify the owner of Crescent Harbor Trust.

Marion joined me at the table. The records showed that Juniper Ridge had existed long before Rebecca’s brother supposedly established it. Money had once entered the company from a business controlled by Wade Fenwick’s father. Another payment had come from my father’s own firm.

“Could Samuel have participated in it?” Marion asked carefully.

“No.”

My answer came too quickly.

“Then perhaps he was studying it,” she said.

The following morning, Eli and I made pancakes. His father usually prepared them on Sundays, and Eli pointed out, with painful honesty, that mine were shaped like Michigan counties.

“This one looks like a boot,” he said.

“Then it’s a fashionable pancake.”

For twenty minutes, we laughed, and the sound reminded me that joy did not need permission from sorrow.

The doorbell rang before we finished eating.

A woman in a plain beige coat stood on Marion’s porch holding a small velvet box. Without her tailored office clothes or confident smile, Rebecca looked tired and uncertain.

“Please let me speak to Natalie,” she said through the intercom.

Marion sent Paul upstairs with Eli before allowing her inside.

Rebecca placed the box on the coffee table.

“The necklace Grant purchased yesterday wasn’t for me.”

“Then start telling the truth and explain who it was for.”

Inside the box lay a restored gold chain with a star-shaped pendant. Tiny initials on the back belonged to Grant’s mother, Judith Holloway, who had supposedly passed away when Grant was twenty.

“My mother handled Judith’s household accounts,” Rebecca explained. “She filed the old insurance claim for this pendant.”
